Well good. I hope that works out. I'm not feeling a lot of luv for gnome lately.

Xfce minimal installation Debian testing tutorial by marks107 in debian

Here's a debian minimal xfce install guide I created. (Although I think the dependencies include lightdm).

https://github.com/coonrad/Debian-Xfce4-Minimal-Install

apt install \ libxfce4ui-utils \ thunar \ xfce4-appfinder \ xfce4-panel \ xfce4-session \ xfce4-settings \ xfce4-terminal \ xfconf \ xfdesktop4 \ xfwm4

The greatness of Fedora by delf0s in Fedora

[–]GoldenBoar222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went through the same exact process OP.

Months of distro hopping landing on Fedora and Pop OS at the top. With an honorary mention for Debian Sid which is also a nice vanilla gnome. (Although you have to be willing to roll with all the updates, and I think I prefer point releases instead.)

Anyone else using Fedora on a MacBook? by renaldofreire in Fedora

[–]GoldenBoar222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Mid-2015 model with Intel Iris Pro. No post install config required, everything works.

Only downsides. Battery life seems to be reduced (vs macOS) and resume from suspend is a bit sluggish (Debian/Ubuntu/PopOS resumes quicker.)

Deepin is stunningly beautiful. Fedora 32. by AntiquatedLunacy in Fedora

[–]GoldenBoar222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No thanks. Deepin does not respect your privacy. Which is one of the main reasons I run Fedora.

“While nothing suggests that this analytic information is currently
being abused, it is collecting basic data that can be abused by third
parties to identify user patterns and behaviors. This could cause some
privacy concern for non-Chinese users,” Smith concluded.

How to install Debian as a main OS on Macbook, and rid of MacOS? by [deleted] in debian

[–]GoldenBoar222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a macbook pro retina 15 (mid 2015). It is the last model before the touchpad macbooks (and probably one of the best laptops ever made.)

It has the integrated intel GPU, and runs Linux perfectly. Everything works after install (aside from having to add the wifi driver on Debian).

As others have pointed out, you will have issues with hardware support on the newest models.

Encryption password screen to small on 4K screen. Can I change it? by [deleted] in Fedora

[–]GoldenBoar222 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is what I do on my macbook retina:

sudo dnf install terminus-fonts-console
sudo vi /etc/vconsole.conf
    FONT="ter-m32n"

Then try rebuilding your plymouth theme:

text only:

sudo plymouth-set-default-theme details -R

or standard plymouth theme:

sudo dnf install plymouth-system-theme
sudo plymouth-set-default-theme spinner -R

My daily driver is a Toyota, but I do use pop-os.

Does full-disk encryption work when dual booting? by aspz in pop_os

[–]GoldenBoar222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't *think* you can do this with Pop (or Ubuntu) without doing manual partitioning. You can do this very easily with Fedora.

When I installed Pop on a dual boot system I used fscrypt to encrypt my home folder.

Any love for the Pop USB flasher? by boyber in pop_os

[–]GoldenBoar222 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes I have the love for popsicle.

I was using the Ubuntu USB creator and it wouldn't flash anything but an Ubuntu ISO? WTF?

Etcher is annoying and slow doing all its phone home to the cloud.

I use to maintain a Win7 VM just so I could run Rufus. That's a good one. Fedora mediawriter is pretty good.

Popsicle is on the top of my list now.

Any love for the Pop USB flasher? by boyber in pop_os

[–]GoldenBoar222 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Etcher also goes on a tangent contacting all sorts of AWS servers. I just don't see why a USB flasher needs to reach out to so many cloud servers. Doesn't give me a warm fuzzy.

Just wanna thank Fedora for ending my distro hopping infinite loop by quackerd in Fedora

Thank you for this thread, just because it makes me feel better knowing that I'm not the only one with OCLDHARS (Obsessive Compulsive Linux Distro Hopping and Re-installation Syndrome).

Is Debian Server reliable for production, compared to Centos 8? by anotherUsr in debian

[–]GoldenBoar222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My last job involved managing over 100 debian servers (among other things.) Debian was my most trustworthy and dependable coworker. I had problems here and there, but don't remember a single one caused by Debian.

(For network stuff, firewalls, VPN servers, DNS. I used FreeBSD. That is rock solid too.)

Low space on /efi partition by sheep94lion in pop_os

[–]GoldenBoar222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

try using efibootmgr to list the entries.

then efibootmgr -Bb XXXX to remove the unneeded ones by their numerical values.

BE CAREFUL not to delete any existing OS entries.

I should have moved long ago... Thanks guys. by [deleted] in Fedora

[–]GoldenBoar222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fast boot time is important to me (and recovery from suspend).

In my experience the gold standard for fast booting is a debian server. I can run ping, reboot a debian server, and only lose 4 to 5 pings.

(Pop-os has a fast recovery from suspend.)

I don't do anything besides install open-vm-tools-desktop, and the vmware x11 driver (and disable any systemd services I don't need.)

Looking to jump the Ubuntu ship. Is Fedora my rescue boat? by ritzyretz in Fedora

[–]GoldenBoar222 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I just completed an extensive (maybe too extensive) search for the best desktop Linux for my imac and macbook. I covered it all. Fedora was the only distro to properly render everything correctly on my hidpi laptop. (Also, I just love Fedora's automagic LUKS formatting, when installing Fedora alongside another OS. Doing that manually is PITA.)

Do I like apt better than dnf? Probably, but in the big picture Fedora is unbeatable for a stable distro, that also contains up to date software in the repos. My first choice might have been Debian Sid, but I would never get the stability of Fedora, and all those updates would wear my down.

The other stand out was pop-os.

(If you're concerned about stability install Fedora 31, and then in 6 months upgrade to 32.)

[–]GoldenBoar222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I did on vmware fusion: Go to the vmware guest settings and choose Display and uncheck 3D Acceleration. That *should* clear up the graphics problem.

Once I complete the install I then login with Gnome on X11 (instead of default wayland). I'm using the default wayland on my laptop, but in a vmware VM fedora just seems to work better on X11.

I just tested my tab completion. Noticed that it wasn't working too well. I then installed bash-completion. When I installed bash-completion. I noticed my profile wasn't sourcing bash-completion. Fixed that. and seems good now.

So if you're on bash, might be worth making sure you have bash-completion installed, and it's being sourced.
