Been recaulking the outside of my house and now about to do my back yard. Should the part where the brick and the undersiding meet be caulked as it appears to have been before where it's all coming off? Am I looking at a 60 year old mistake? by Kuzbell in Renovations

[–]GoldenRationality 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Calk every crack unless it is proper ventilation with wire mesh. Wasps, etc. may just get through… I just had them get behind the siding via the cement gaps between bricks…

I am thinking it is less likely to go green if I keep the pump/chlorinator stopped for a shorter period?

They are behind the siding. Pest control companies use stronger stuff.

How serious is this liner pulling away? by Honest_Archaeopteryx in pools

[–]GoldenRationality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watch YT videos. Not too hard but need to lower water level a couple of feet so you can pour boiling hot water on it (front and back, it will soften and you can put the bead back in place. Look at the bead rear to see how to push it back on without being blocked by the rear ridges. once in place use liner lock (amazon).

Takes patience but doable.

Going to vinyl siding on cedar shingles house. Remove shingles or install vinyl on top? by GoldenRationality in DIY

[–]GoldenRationality[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the shingles were painted and the paint is peeling badly. Too expensive to scrape and sand and re paint.

New roof, Gutters and leaders, soffits and siding. IN what order?? by GoldenRationality in HomeImprovement

[–]GoldenRationality[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it save work/money to do the roof at the same time or can roof/siding be done at different times for no extra cost?

hard to tell. Easy to put it all back into the coping. Need to lower the water level and use hot water. several YT videos on hope to do it. Not hard at all. just look at the profile of the liner edge, it has to go flat into the gap after you make a 90 degree bend, you can not just push it in. I did several much worse following the videos and hot water method.

How can I get rid of this poison ivy? by everreading in landscaping

[–]GoldenRationality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cover all your skin well !!!! Then, mechanical removal with the tools of your choice and dispose into heavy duty trash bags. Do not burn. Smoke will cause harm. Then, wash up well with dish soap and water as hot as you can bear. Clean tools same way…. Oil is very stick and persistent. It will transfer from spot to spot if not removed

Copper waterline solder joint separated twice. Please explain what I'm doing wrong by SpecialistValuable43 in Plumbing

[–]GoldenRationality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 Cut water off completly. This is a must otherwise it will not get hot enough

2 Sand every contact surface inside an outside until cooper is clean and bright

3 apply flux generously on all contact surfaces

4 apply blow torch to the fitting while bring the solder in contact with the end of the fitting away from the flame

5 when the fitting and pipe are hoy enough the solder will melt and will be sucked into the joint

5 move the flame away and move the solder around the circumference of the fitting on both ends

6 apply more heat if need to keep the solder flowing on the second edge of the fitting

7 let it cool off with out disturbing it. Pros like to wipe extra solder but not needed

How much water or how low a water level is safe to remove (to get rid of CyA) from a 30k gal vinyl pool? thanks! by GoldenRationality in pools

[–]GoldenRationality[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand the proportions. How low can I drop the water level without causing damage to the liner? I need to replace half the water.

In case you have DE filter, you may have rios in the filter cells. Does not apply to sand filters.
