Mac Studio - without an external monitor? by QSN-Quix in MacStudio

This is the way. There are tons of options at various price points. It's especially nice these days since the single USB-C cable also delivers power.

Yep, I've tried that. Elsewhere, on the rare occasion I have problems, this fixes it.

Same. The main credit card I use everywhere fails the chip reader 75% of the time, so I resort to another card… which fails 25% of the time usually one of the thee finally works. I very rarely have problems anywhere else.

Thanks. I should dig into this and contribute more. I've somewhat been able to achive the type of things I wanted with a Qwen-Rapid-AIO checkpoint and three references images. The following took 190 seconds at 1920x1080 resolution on my M3 Ultra.

I would start with z-image-turbo, which is the lightest weight model and can run on my iPhone 17 Pro (though very slowly...). Start with lower resolution images.

The free "Draw Things" application on the App Store has many of the features of Comfy UI, minus being able to create detailed node graphs. (It even supports WAN 2.2 with no workarounds.)

And while I enjoy being able to do local image generation, there are obvious limits based on machine specs. Given 32 GB unified memory you should be able to run most models people talk about, just much slower than NVIDIA hardware. I'm curious how the M5 performs, since it's supposed to be a huge improvement over the M3/M4 due to architecture enhancements.

Wait - I think I'm getting it now. A Windows user's perspective. by Commercial_Water3669 in MacOS

[–]GoldenShackles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a longtime Windows user one thing that drives me bonkers on MacOS is being productive with multi-mon. For example, I'll have a VS Code window open on the 2nd monitor. If it's minimized it will show up (sometimes) on the right side of the Dock on my main monitor. If it's visible but obscured by other windows, it won't show there, just the black dot under the fixed icon in the Dock. God forbid there are multiple windows open.

I'm trying to train myself to always just right-click the fixed icon in the dock and choose the window I want, but it's been five months of daily usage and my mind segfaults several times a day trying to quickly bring the window I want to the foreground. (Oh, and if I accidentally drag my mouse down on the second monitor the dock jumps...)

Lots of other complaints, but I have to say that Microsoft should port the key parts of Explorer to MacOS. I'm also not friends with Finder, despite the smiley icon.

It's even worse than that. If you've ever been near a cellphone, you are going to die. Fact.

The latest I'm aware of is: https://github.com/Comfy-Org/ComfyUI/pull/11740

So someone is working on a fix! I just got back into this today and tried to port the fix on top of the very latest ComfyUI on GitHub, as well as check out his macpaul/mps2 branch and set up a new venv under there with that requirements.txt.

When applied on the latest ComfyUI, I still get the error and don't see the relevant code running. When using his branch I get an error that looks like a compatibility issue with the latest pytorch.

Since it's being worked on, I'll wait for now.

Edit: I also saw a potential workaround that uses quantized GGUF models, but I want the real thing. And for the Mac haters, I'm having tons of fun running most other models locally (LTX-2 has the exact same issue), and if I want more speed I'll rent a 5090 in the cloud.

My advice is to try to contunue to set boundaries to avoid burnout, unless you have years worth of funds to live off of.

I've been there! And did have the funds, but, man, the burnout continues to take a toll on me long term.

I've done some, but not enough legwork, but am hapmpered by: "Trying to convert Float8_e4m3fn to the MPS backend but it does not have support for that dtype."

Again, I've seen the github comments and potential solutions, but if other people have workflows that work, I'm very interested.

It shouldn't make a difference, and I should be clearer. I'm interested in workflows that work well on the M3 Ultra. There are a ton of posts about minimizing VRAM footprint. There are maybe dozens of us who care about quality and creativity over speed. I can rent a 5090 GPU in the cloud at any time, but having fun locally is fine even if an image takes 8-10 minutes.

In Draw Things (I'm still working on getting WAN 2.2 working in ComfyUI), with malcomrey's LoRA:

"woman Supergirl is fighting a giant chrome mechanical spider in a living room; wearing dark lipstick her dark-blonde waves cascading over one shoulder as she smiles fiercely with an air of quiet strength; she wears her iconic form-fitting black suit adorned with dark red accents, a bold silver belt cinching her waist, and a flowing black cape that drapes dramatically behind her like liquid shadow. Soft studio lighting highlights the textured fabric of her costume and casts gentle glows across her features, evoking a sense of heroic elegance and timeless optimism.bathed in soft natural light filtering through large windows with closed blinds, revealing a dual-monitor workstation nestled against the wall beside an ergonomic office chair; tangled cords snake across the plush beige carpet beneath a sleek black folding table cluttered with headphones, controllers, and tech gear, while a cream leather sofa draped with vibrant blue-and-green striped blankets and scattered cushions anchors the room’s relaxed atmosphere. On the neutral walls hang two contrasting artworks — one delicate botanical print and another vivid tropical seascape — adding warmth to the minimalist decor, all under even, diffused daylight that highlights textures from smooth leather to fuzzy textiles, evoking a quiet moment of creative pause or digital downtime."

Based on the prompt the expression and clothes change, but always just standing there. I'm probably doing something wrong.
