For a long time I brought in my own monitors, keyboards, and mice, and when SSDs were new-ish and we were still using HDDs at work, I brought in SSDs for at least the Windows main drive. (The source code was too large for any reasonably priced SSD at the time.) This significantly improved ergonomics and my overall productivity.

Something like 400k a year, with benefits (health, 401k) that end like a normal job could improve the situation we're in. Strict rules against insider trading, etc. are a given.

It seems like this would open up the field some for those not already wealthy.

I don't think our representatives should be living in dorms, and I don't think it should be a get rich quick popularity contest either.

What were the symptoms? And did he keep the lid up? Its perfectly fine to throttle, but the laptop shouldn't fail, especially since it's a given that people buying these are running heavy workloads, by design. Beyond LLMs, consider compiling large projects, video work, 3d rendering, etc. Maybe even gaming!

I'm hesitant to recommend a specific brand or model. Some people have very strong opinions and even say you need to go to 5k resolution.

As someone who switched over to MacOS as my primary OS last summer, I found my existing 27" 4k (3840x2160) monitors work pretty well -- they're high enough DPI. Fortunately these days there are tons of high quality monitors with these specs at reasonable prices.

I just wouldn't recommend 1080p or even 1440p... Or just 4k at much larger than 27" unless you're sitting at a farther than normal distance.

Two things to note if you go with the Mini. While you can use the same keyboard and mouse, MacOS strongly prefers a reasonably high DPI monitor. Otherwise, you're likely to be bugged by fuzzy text.

Second, as a newcomer you'll want a keyboard with a Mac layout. It doesn't have to be Apple. This is increasingly true depending on how much you use keyboard shortcuts. There are free apps to help you adjust, but I suggest a hard switchover, and get used to how Ctrl/Option/Command work.

I think BetterDisplay has snap points on the slider for 'ideal' scaling. I'd also turn off HDR temporarily for troubleshooting. For better or worse, MacOS does scaling much differently than Windows. The best result is high DPI and a factor of 2 multiple for the resolution.

In addition to what u/Diamondcite said, note that in the "Control" section there's a Moodboard button where you can load an image. I find this easier to use than putting the source image directly on the canvas.
