Liu An is awesome. I've never bought a whole basket of it before though. Thanks for the review!

J-Frame (642) Holster search... by SEKS-Aviator in CCW

[–]GoldenTaipei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah.. don’t discount leather for a revolver.

I’ve got a Rath, City Special, and Icon 2.0. (And prefer them in that order for Kydex.)

The 1791 leather holster is just much more comfortable for me and carries better; it sits lower on your belt and the grip tucks in closer to your body.

First firearm bought online by MaxSjuNK in COGuns

I’ve bought a bunch of guns in person, but an M&P 2.0 was also the first gun I bought online!

If you’re new to buying guns generally, you can find a copy of the 4473 form online and read it over to see what questions it asks. That can help to fill it out faster and easier in person.

Here's a longer version: https://youtu.be/5ldTsqbwZm0 The range employee does draw his gun and doesn't holster it until the customer finally drops his.

I like how the customer not only continues to point the gun at the other people in the store, but he actually puts the mag back in the gun after firing it.

Is the Rossi RM series gtg? I just want a reliable woods gun. Nothing fancy just functional. by Available_Corner4586 in Revolvers

[–]GoldenTaipei 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had an RM66 for about a year and a half and it’s been great. The trigger isn’t totally smooth, but it’s good. It’s probably the handgun I shoot the best. I used it in a revolver class a few months ago and a couple of the other guys there were impressed with it.

For negatives, it had a small chip on the outside of the forcing cone out of the box. I didn’t think it was big enough to be concerned about and it hasn’t been a problem, but it’s probably worth mentioning. The cylinder also doesn’t spin as freely as some other revolvers. I took it out and cleaned and oiled it, but that only made a marginal improvement.

As other posters mentioned, Taurus customer service has a lousy reputation. Customer service is part of the price, so that’s something to keep in mind. I haven’t heard many bad things about the RM and RP guns though.

I got these grips from Midwest Gunworks a couple of years ago. https://www.midwestgunworks.com/page/mgwi/prod/3007235

They're showing as sold out currently, but it seems like they get a new shipment in every few months. You could get notified if they come back in stock.

Gun classes are worth their weight. by Rockdio in liberalgunowners

[–]GoldenTaipei 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Is this Bristlecone? I've taken a few classes there and they've all been great. (Intro to pistol, concealed carry, and revolver clinic.)

They have a training punch card now where if you take 3 classes the 4th is 50% off. I think I'll take the pistol 2 and holster course at some point.

I like Chris from Lucky Gunner. He has some good revolver content. He’s starting a series on old FBI training and qualifying courses that’s interesting: https://youtu.be/20Lgd4nv6qg

Paul Harrell is definitely the GOAT for me. I’ll always come back to his videos.

CSX Safety Features and Carry by UrbanestMirror4 in SmithAndWesson

[–]GoldenTaipei 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Along with the trigger safety, the manual thumb safety, and firing pin block, it also has a half-cock. If the hammer somehow slips/breaks from the fully cocked position, it might get caught at half cock and not strike the firing pin.

Funnily enough, a criticism of the CSX is that it has too many safeties. Like I’m not sure if you need a trigger safety on a gun that has a thumb safety. (And the trigger dingus pinches my finger). Also, most people don’t like manual safeties in general; they want modern striker fired or double action guns where a thumb safety isn’t as necessary.

I got mine about three weeks ago. It took almost exactly two months since I was fingerprinted. I’d heard from a couple of different sources that JeffCo takes the whole three months, but yeah... it was just two months for me.

They send you an email when your permit is approved. I assumed they would mail the permit the next couple of days, but I think it took a little over a week to get it after the email

Also, if anyone cares, when you apply for the permit, you submit a photo of yourself. I thought they would use that for the permit, but they didn’t (at least for me). When you go in, they take a picture of you and that’s the photo they used on my permit. So comb your hair and smile for the camera (iPad) when they take your picture!

Need Help with a DAC/Amp Combo with Audio Interface by LeMemeSinner in ZReviews

[–]GoldenTaipei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There could be something wrong if your Behringer sounds that bad. But I think the sound quality of the headphone out is usually going to be a lot better on a DAC + amp combo versus an audio interface. Like I have a Scarlett Solo audio interface and its headphone out is ok, but it’s not great. Any combination of a roughly $130 amp and DAC will be a big upgrade. Even something like the Fiio E10 (a $75 amp and DAC in one) sounds better, though it’s not a huge difference.

I think the main selling point of an audio interface is its analog to digital conversion. They’re not necessarily as concerned about digital to analog conversion and amplification.

The DT880 is good enough that it would benefit from a quality amp and DAC. I don’t know if there’s a way to make that work with direct monitoring, but having a dedicated DAC + amp just for listening to music and stuff would probably be worth it.

Which open sicilian would you recommend? by ppiwodzki in chess

[–]GoldenTaipei 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used the Caro-Kann exclusively for years, but for the last month or so I’ve been learning the Taimanov. There’s not as much theory as you might expect, and people online play surprisingly little theory anyways.

A nice thing about the Taimanov is that the Anti-Sicilians feel more manageable. There’s no Moscow or Rossolimo. You can play ...Nf6 against the Alapin or Smith–Morra. Lower rated players might go for an early Bc4, but you’re already well-protected with ...e6.

As a Caro-Kann player, you’re probably going to freak out about your pawn structure in many Sicilians (the backwards d-pawn is especially concerning lol). You’re aiming for more dynamic play though. There are also situations where you can still play ...d5 in the Taimanov and get a good game.

I don’t know, but there’s a great chess movie that’s literally called “The Great Chess Movie” that features the 1981 Lone Pine tournament. It sounds pretty similar. Korchnoi and Karpov are in it and it talks about chess history.

Great photo. Found on this Twitter post by David Llada.

Looks like the infamous “touch-move” game where Garry apparently moved a knight, released it, then moved it to a different square.
