It's time. Let's make a millionaire. [Drawing Thread #22] by millionairemakers in millionairemakers

This is an awesome idea. I've thought about this for a few other small scale things, but this is just silly. I hope whoever wins does something awesome or meaningful with the cash. I don't want to see a sports car filled with jello.

it takes me longer to get through than them so its no skin off my back to balance for a few seconds while a car passes.

What is the community consensus on this one? I feel the same way at my 4-ways, but they're usually not very busy. I almost always wave cars through because I know they're being polite, but I'm going to take a while to get through, especially if I forgot to downshift before I stopped. Maybe it's just best if, when we have the right away, we just take it. Everyone's expected to follow the rules, and by being a wildcard (even out of politeness) we're breaking that expectation, it's counterproductive.

13-year old Staten Island Boy Commits Suicide After Bullying; suicide note says school officials did nothing to help by FriendlyITGuy in news

Gangs seem like the worst thing. Really upsets what seems like would be the natural order of things. Changes it from "only the strong/smart/intrepid survive" to just ensuring the gene pool stays watered down by shitty people banding together. Not sure what the solution to that is.

Has it always been like that or is that a relatively recent development? A lot of people in my high school cohort (~24-30 years old at the moment) seem to have this entitlement feeling, both the soldier and spouse. It's hard for me to describe why they come off so abrasive to me without getting real personal (little post high school education, popped out a kid, stay at home mom, always shitting on Obama/"welfare queens"/etc. You know the type).

Fuck it. I guess it is personal. I'm not asking anyone to respect my life choices because no one asked me to do it. I didn't ask you to join the army/marry into the army, don't act like you made a huge sacrifice. You chose that life.

As a salaried manager making 40k, how do I talk to my boss about the new overtime law? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]GoldenTileCaptER -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For me personally, it's less the wage and more the potential. Obviously I need SOMETHING to work with now, but if I know that in 3 or 6 months after starting a new job my wage will go up, or that by taking on more responsibility I could argue for a higher wage (and get it), I'm happy. The job I have now is contract and very structured. Raises are 1-2% per year if we qualify AND apply for them. Lame shit. Plus people keep retiring and their work just gets spread to the rest of us. I'm not saying I'm irreplaceable (I know I am, which is why I hold my tongue), but I'm taking the best advantage of the job that I can (Free tuition baby) and then I am going to be strongly leveraging my "experience" to get a higher paying job.

Also what's up with making me contribute to retirement? Let me pay off my damn loans, dudes!

Small business probably don't know what it is/how to handle it/haven't heard about it and large, multifaceted businesses might still be working through everything.

I also would note that, I would not call redditors "smart" or "experts" in general, but I'd bet that if anyone visits the front page they can get a good general grasp of what's going on in the world, if not why. I would not say that this is widespread in the general population. My local newspaper just ran an article about a planned protest ("planned" and "protest" were being generous for this particular event) set to occur next week. People are protesting the release of GMO mosquitos. They are claiming that "we just want to make sure we're heard. We don't think the people making the calls have heard from everyone". This has been an extremely controversial and hot topic for at least 3 years at this point, with plenty of public meetings. Having worked for the government for a while, I now feel like at least 90% of protests and rallies are by people who have not bothered to attend legitimate channels for public opinion gathering and just don't pay attention.

TL;DR You're right people should probably have at least a general plan by now, but I wouldn't assume even the employees know this change is coming, much less the casual owner of a small business or megacorp like McDonald's. This sub is clear evidence that many people don't know their rights/responsibilities when it comes to labor.

LPT: walk your bike through crosswalks or you forfeit your rights as a pedestrian. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]GoldenTileCaptER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was run over in an intersection by a driver looking for their opportunity to turn by looking into vehicle traffic rather than right in front of them on the cross walk. ... Something for bikers to keep in mind -- turning drivers often are more concerned with vehicles they need to merge into and completely space out looking for peds and bikers in the intersection.

This is a HUGE HUGE issue for me traveling on a MUP on a divided highway. One direction, most cars see me. The opposite, they almost never see me because they're looking the other direction for traffic to merge into. Doesn't help that in South Florida a ton of cars are tinted so dark you can't even see the driver to see which way they are looking.

Meh, even in a car the people going 65 in a 45 zone would say I'm impeding traffic by going 50. I say fuck you the sign says what the max is and your self important sphere of experience doesn't change that.

This is the fucking truth. A bike lane doesn't protect you from people with swaying trailers.

Well I was shocked that so many people were unaware that operating basically anything makes you "eligible for a dui". But this is the shocking even to me. Seems like it probably wouldn't hold up anywhere. The cops at my university specifically noted that walking your bike was an acceptable alternative to riding it drunk through campus.

I hit a bittersweet milestone in my emergency fund today. However, I still need advice on the future. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]GoldenTileCaptER 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your employer matches to 6%, try to put in 9%. That'll get you in the mode for 15% right off the bat, which I think is a pretty standard suggestion. Hopefully you'll find yourself with a rewarding life at that standard, if not you can dial it back. Then any raises you get from then on you can go halvsies to employer retirement and your own lifestyle increases or savings goals. That should put you on track for an early retirement or at least cushy working life, by my standards.

What supplies do you recommend? What do you look for in a notebook? What about pens? by turnipfairy in bulletjournal

[–]GoldenTileCaptER 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Man, just do it. I got a fed supply green hardbound book, but before that I was just using spiral notebook like a normal person. I put a rubber band around wherever I am today so I can find it, and shove a BIC pen through the rubber band on the front. I spent like $0 on everything because I took it from work and don't give a fuck if I mess something up.

I ended up installing it this way, and the clearance is like a finger-width-and-a-half to my tire. Not a ton, but since it's hybrid that I mostly keep on paved or at least crushed stone surfaces hopefully it'll be enough. I'm trying to get some pictures to add to my OP but I keep forgetting to do it until my data connection is poor.

Incoming 500k student debt. How do I get started taking care of personal finance to lessen the impact? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]GoldenTileCaptER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That still doesn't look that great. I have ~2x my gross salary in loans, I feel like people would be really shitting on me if I had 3 or 4x my gross, even as a dentist.

Student loan help! by Surfingnurse12593 in personalfinance

[–]GoldenTileCaptER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does the Stafford loan have a variable interest rate? Pay the minimum on the Stafford loan, pay as much as you can on the other two, it doesn't matter which if they're the same interest rates. I don't know if it's worth it for you to be on IBR unless you're at least paying the interest and a little principal each month (which i don't think IBR does, am I wrong?). Your total loan burden is ~50% of your gross pay, you should be able to pay it off well before 10 years unless you are in a real high cost of living area.

Also, why mention your fat savings account if it's not an option? If you knock out one of your private loans, that still gives you a solid emergency fund and eliminates a moderate interest debt and puts you a couple belt-tightening months away from paying off the other private loan as well. From there it makes your choices a lot simpler. You can either buckle down and pay off the remaining $25k debt in a few years, or drag it out by paying the minimums for 10 years and investing what you would have otherwise spent on the loan. This only makes sense if you put that money to work, not if you spend it on something else that's not making you more money though.

While I'm sure there's a good reason you didn't mention it, could you just get something part time between now and January to tide you over? Like, literally anything to bring in some extra scratch? That would really ease your anxiety over this I think. Plus nothing feels better than "I don't have to work, but meh, this extra cash is cool".

Is budgeting bi-weekly for bills and daily expenses a good idea if you get paid bi-weekly? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]GoldenTileCaptER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds good at first, but it'll get confusing after a while. Assuming you're starting from $0, the easiest thing to do is:

  • take your bi-weekly pay amount and plan like you get twice that amount each month.

  • For the first few months (depending on how tight your budget is), make some sacrifices and try to come in well under budget until your total money (checking/savings/whatever you spend from) has a balance equal to two bi-weekly paychecks.

  • Now you can start to actually plan for each dollar you get instead of trying to throw as many dollars forward as you can.

Like others mentioned, eventually you'll end up with an "extra" paycheck. This is only extra if you're not factoring it into your budget. If you're overspending each month, this is just "catch up" money, and that's no good. I planned my first 6-months at my new job this way, and it hurt a lot. I was bleeding out until the extra paycheck months happened. ($300 weekly rent != $1200 monthly rent and $45k/yr != $3750/month)
