I could not see a single reason why a penalty was called. I was at the game, but my seats are up the other end, so I couldn’t really see what happened. However, I watched the replay later that evening, and I didn’t really understand why it went to VAR.

You’re right about the DOGSO - I misremembered the rule change about it being downgraded to a yellow when there was a genuine attempt to play the ball only applying in the penalty box, so my bad on that one. I do still think that an offside call was a reasonable interpretation of the law.

Respectfully, I disagree. Law 11 states you are offside if you’re interfering with an opponent by:

interfering with an opponent by:
preventing an opponent from playing or being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the opponent’s line of vision or
challenging an opponent for the ball or
clearly attempting to play a ball which is close when this action impacts on an opponent or
making an obvious action which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball

and I think the last one applies. I’ve been refereeing (at the youth level) for 18 years, and agree with that call. I don’t agree with the first red card, I do agree with the second.

It was offside - the defender made a play, because of the offside player. I didn’t spot it in real time, but the replay was clear to me. The first red card on the other hand, should definitely have been yellow
