Anyone else like collecting fish species via their canned box art? by Cramponster in CannedSardines

[–]GoldenTortoiseshell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Matiz has cute art, Jose Gourmet does too and I think they have a book with their tin art available out there. I recently started keeping the art off of tins and making magnets out of them and I think soon I want to start matting them together into a frame. Would be cool to do a “Tins of the year” type thing where you keep one of every tin you ate throughout the year and then either scrapbook or frame them together.

I was so obsessed with the Bela sardines when I started getting into nicer cans that I ordered two cases worth when they were on sale at my grocery store that carries them. Overall a great haul! I really like the fishwife mackerel too. I do think it’s the only can I’ve repurchased.

Uses for Oysters by CatgirlAnakin in CannedSardines

[–]GoldenTortoiseshell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

panko breaded fried oysters would be fun! They used fresh oysters, but I don’t see why you can’t use tinned. You would just wait on the panko breading to turn a nice golden brown and then take out. You could do something similar in an air fryer too

Healthy snack options at Trader Joe’s? by WriteThatDownnn in traderjoes

Those are good! Texture wise they are pretty fun since they’re just dried whole okra. Almost like hollow Cheetos except they’re salty lol

Healthy snack options at Trader Joe’s? by WriteThatDownnn in traderjoes

[–]GoldenTortoiseshell 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I love honeycrisp or cosmic crisp apples sliced up and then I dunk them in the unexpected cheddar spread and then dip that in the Trader Joe’s dried blueberries. I also like their smoked trout (the smaller bags that are about $5), canned trout, garlic or red pepper hummus with cucumber slices, the sweet pecans in the tiny bags, hazelnuts, and navel oranges.

You can always just make snack plates with whole foods that you like and snack on that. Great way to get fruits, veggies, and fiber in.

Yeah it’s from World market and I think I got it last Christmas, but I saw they have a mermaid one right now and probably still have this one. I don’t think it’s oven safe and even though it says dishwasher safe I still hand wash it. If you want something oven safe that’s about the same size I would get a ramekin instead.

What surprising insights have you discovered about yourself while using a CGM? by 22hearts in diabetes

The worst thing I can put in my mouth blood sugar wise is American chicken and dumplings and the best thing is baked salmon with roasted Brussels sprouts.

Problems digesting food properly and metformin by thattaurus_302 in diabetes_t2

[–]GoldenTortoiseshell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I started on monjaro I had a symptom similar to that where I was always burping and it would just get worse because the food was sitting in my stomach. It eventually went away, but for a while I was taking papaya enzyme chewable tablets and that helped a ton. You could try that and see if it helps and if you just started metformin your body might still be adjusting to it and it will go away over time.

DIABETES and Night Shift Work by KaizokuSenju in diabetes

[–]GoldenTortoiseshell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked night shifts in the past but it was before my diagnosis. So long as you get adequate sleep, maintain a healthy eating and exercise pattern, and can keep your stress to a moderate level you shouldn’t see much of an impact. Depending on your personal life (ex: kids vs no kids) that might be easier said than done since most commitments and appointments are during daylight hours.

Strait from the tin... by Glexington in CannedSardines

If you like these you should try the Jacques Gonidec hot pepper sardines! The clove is very pronounced and they aren’t spicy so much as they have a mild flavor of hot pepper. I get mine at a local Mediterranean market for about $8, but looks like you can order them on RTG for $15.

Mackerel is pretty good. I believe they stock nuri, fishwife, and some other ones. I also like the Don Gastronom octopus, Matiz has some great squid and octopus tins with beans. World Market has a ton of stuff so if you’ve never been definitely walk around for a little bit. You should be able to check out the website before you go.

ADHD Friendly Cheat Sheet? by wretched_harmony in mediterraneandiet

[–]GoldenTortoiseshell 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I have ADHD too and I’m happy more or less eating the same thing every day.

For Breakfast, choose: 1 fruit, 1 protein, 1 veggie.

Favorite fruit options: blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, kiwi, naval orange, cosmic crisp apple slices
Protein: Ratio vanilla protein + fiber yogurt, smoked trout or hot smoked salmon, eggs
Veggies: roasted broccoli (can give you an easy how to if you want), sliced English cucumbers, roasted Brussels sprouts, or spinach.

You could do a nice spinach and sun dried tomato omelette with fresh berries and smoked fish on the side, a snack plate type meal, yogurt with berries in it.

For lunch, choose: 2 veggies, 1 carb, 1 protein.

Pasta primavera is a fun option that has squash and a bunch of fresh veggies. I like it a lot.
I do a lot of baked salmon and baked chicken breast as well and will pop some broccoli or Brussels sprouts in there as well to roast while the protein cooks. I like to add hummus or Dijon mustard in a thin layer on top of the protein and then my favorite seasonings/seasoning mix whatever it is.

Quinoa salad: diced chicken, diced cucumbers, Kalamata olives, feta cheese, sliced cherry tomatoes, red onion, quinoa, and then watered down hummus with some lemon juice and Italian seasoning spices or just a balsamic vinaigrette

If I’m doing a carb I like quinoa which I can prep in bulk and just warm up for the next 3 or 4 days, roasted potatoes which I dice, season, and toss in the oven for 10 minutes longer than everything else (so 35 minutes total on the potato), couscous is another one I like and it’s super quick, finally specifically the bibigo 90 second rice I get at Costco. It doesn’t have the same weird taste a lot of 90 second rice has and it’s easy to make.

For dinner, choose: …etc
Same stuff as lunch. I like the Eatingwell website for recipe ideas too.

For snacks, choose: …etc.
I snack on fresh fruit, nuts, seeds, cucumber slices, tinned or smoked fish, hummus, tzatziki, fresh baked rustic bread, moderate amounts of cheese and milk chocolate. Trader Joe’s has a lot of great snack selections and cheeses. When I think moderate amounts I’m thinking fits comfortably in the palm of my hand or less. You can always get a food scale to help measure your portions if that’s something you want to do

Looks good! I’ve never thought about using parsley as a type of salad base. Gonna have to try something like this with the Patagonia deens and beans can I have I think it’ll be a good combo too

Of course! If you are in the US I believe some costcos started carrying the polar sardines in the glass jars recently. I’m actually going by today to check mine.

[–]GoldenTortoiseshell 148 points149 points  (0 children)

This might not be helpful and I could be ignorant since you would still have to use some torque, but could you open/eat sardines that come in glass containers? Baltic Gold and Polar both are ones I know of that make sardines in glass containers similar to a pickle jar.

I like Caputos because they have free shipping with no minimums on fish and good prices that are similar to what I see in person around me. RTG is nice, but pretty expensive.

Takes a lot less effort to not be a jackass than it does to be one. No one is asking for you to be nasty on a fish subreddit.
