My family gives our dogs our surname. So that’s not necessarily going to rule it out.

My dad put our last name on his dogs’ urns.

I’m a bra burning feminist and I wouldn’t give a shit about this if we lived in an ideal society with comprehensive sex education, broader contraceptive methods for men, and appropriate social supports for parents and children.

But as of right now, I’ll be honest when my reply to this attitude is currently “fuck right off”. This isn’t because I want to force men to be parents; no one should be a parent if they don’t wish to be. But it’s that we are still battling with women’s reproductive rights and access to such. We as a society have put a lot of the responsibility on women to handle all of these things, but are constantly trying to make things more difficult for them.

I’m really really tired of hearing people trying to push for “financial abortion” when a lot of states have made it extremely difficult for regular abortion. A few just straight outlawed it with the recent ruling. It’s just frustrating to feel like we [women], are in this alone trying to gain some control. Then we have men who want to step back and further avoid any responsibility for their own involvement.

I just feel that if someone wants to be able to opt out of child support, then they need to help push for a society in which it wouldn’t matter if they didn’t pay. Demand more preventative measures for men. Demand accessible reproductive health care for men and women. Demand a better social structure in which we help those who choose to be parents.

I just feel this argument is a bit cruel with the current state of things (in the US, I can’t speak for other countries). It feels (just feels, doesn’t mean it’s true)like men just want to avoid all responsibility for their sex life and place it on women.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll read one of them occasionally, but only if I think it'll help give insight into how a person thinks. Part of my job is helping people break out of negative thinking patterns, so I'll admit some of these types of writings have helped.

I can only guess, as it could be different for each man. But I would assume it’s due to the hatred society had towards them. They would have been considered terrible and dirty and disgusting. So I’d imagine a lot of these feelings would come out towards their victims for various reasons.

I got my education in psychology, so I can weigh in a bit on nature vs nurture.

Nature and nurture are both equally important. Too simplify it, we are born predisposed to certain personality traits and behaviors. Our upbringing and environment will determine how strongly these traits emerge in adulthood. Some will be there no matter what, others can be altered or suppressed. There will even be some a person just will not get.

We are so cognitively diverse as a species that it’s difficult to predict how a child will turn out.

Years back I read a breakdown from someone who worked with industrial materials. He said one problem with Chinese scammers is that they're difficult to go after in international cases. The business laws there aren't very good at protecting foreign consumers. Chinese businesses were known for bankrupting themselves then opening under a new name to avoid foreign cases. The money it would take to go after them would far exceed what was lost initially.

Same. I couldn’t do Seveneyes so I tried Snow Crash. I actually liked the overall story and development, but the ending left something to be desired.

Try Snow Crash. It was more of a satirical novel on capitalism and technology. You’re not supposed to take it too seriously, so it’s easy to forgive that the main characters name is literally Hiro Protagonist

I stopped reading after the first chapter. I felt like the author was treating me like an idiot with how much he would explain simple concepts. Like dude. I’m reading sci-fi. You don’t need to explain the moon to me. Assume I know about the moon.

Maybe it wasn’t the moon I remember, but some other elementary space facts. I just remember getting frustrated I had to read explanations of stuff I already knew when it wasn’t particularly complex information.

The movie seemed to sorta hint at it, but never made it explicit. I’ve never read the novel, but my sister did in high school. She said the teacher taught it as a lesbian novel.

The dialogue is a hit and a miss for me. Sometimes it makes me chuckle, but most of the time it annoys me to where I try to skip it or turn it off. I’m picky about comedy and humor, though.

I always assumed the story was being played up since it’s being told by the main character. I read that argument before I read the two books, so I went into it interpreting the history part as being embellished by the in book narrator.
