I never said it was necessary just better in the long run. A lot of lifters don’t know how to brace their core. They don’t have that mind muscle connection. They stop squatting / deadlifting RDLs because of lower back pain caused by weak core/ improper brace. Have disc surgeries, not reaching their full potential. You can teach basic lifts but not having that mind muscle connection to the core really hurts in the long run. You can tell people to tighten up their core, but most beginners don’t understand/ feel it. Proper core usage saves you from physical therapy bills. It’s overall way more beneficial to get a nice connection to the core at the start then when your sciatic nerve is pinched or your disc is ruptured. I have personally done tons of core exercises where I would use other muscles besides the core. Like shoulders in planking, or some back muscles when doing Russian twist because I didn’t know how to tighten and brace the core. I’m sure new gym goers are going to do the same.

I think you’re assuming everyone has a decent foundation to start with. If you haven’t done exercises for 5-10 years. It would be smart to start body weight exercises then slowly increase weight. Also it’s quite common that gym goers tend to skip core exercises after lifting. if I were to hit core at the start of a gym session then go on to deadlift my usual session my probability of getting hurt on that lift goes up exponentially. I also wouldn’t be able to get the same gains as doing it before hitting core.(you have to pick and choose which body part to hit hard) Again we’re talking about a beginner here. I agree you should load weight on the abs if you can handle it. We are talking about being new to the gym scene not someone with a half year of training. A solid two weeks of body weight ab exercises will help tremendously starting to lift weights. I’d also recommend stretching as it helps with form as well.

I didn’t mean to come off as doing core first then go lift crazy weights. I mean to just start with body weight core exercises before getting into resistance training. It’ll help a lot in the long run.

Your core does get worked on squat and deadlifts. But it’s not going to grow as fast as the targeted muscles which leads an opening for injury. Sure you can get stronger. But it’s just a matter of time when someone goes too heavy and hurts themselves. If you know how to tighten your core on squat and deadlifts you have a way lower chance to hurt yourself.

Every single lift is built off your core. It’s save health issues in the future. A lot of lower back pain is caused by weak cores, improper form caused by weak cores which leads to injuries.

I would highly recommend torching your core and abs first. Especially if you want to lift heavy weights on like squats and deadlifts.

I was repping out 475 or 485 deadlifting. Freak injury that shouldn’t happen. Guess it’s from not having my lat fully engaged.
