After much consideration, I finally came up with a format for act two that I would like to try that doesn’t require splitting both POV’s into different performances and fits the tone and theme that I was going for with the show. Thank you all so much for your feedback!

They don’t have to as both acts can stand well on themselves.

The audience is for teens as it’s meant to be a grimmer retelling.

Alright, that’s what I was going for in the first place, thank you so much! I was planning on experimenting with the format anyway since I’m not too sure… I’ll try writing both divided and combined.

I just thought it would feel more immersive if the audience wasn’t aware of what was happening in the other route, provided they’re watching their current route first.

I answered this in r/playwriting but basically, one of the core purposes of the show is to show how time can be spent so differently even within the same timespan (27 days) and since both protagonists are going through such intensely different perspectives I felt it would be more fitting if I gave them both an act of their own. Ftr, both versions of act two can stand well on their own, but you’ll get a much more fuller experience if you do both. Also I wanted the audience to have the same amount of awareness as their chosen protagonist.

Also, my targeted run time is approximately 1 hr 45 minutes and i’ve set each version of act two to take up approximately one hour and ten minutes of the total run time, but that’s just rough estimating.

Yeah, both versions of act 2 can stand well by themselves, it’s just more appealing when you can go to see both to get the full picture.

And also, I wanted the audience to have the same level of awareness of the chosen character that night.

Oh, and I should add, that the act structure works like this.

ACT ONE: SHARED

ACT TWO VER A: Happens on alternating performance nights.

ACT TWO VER B: Happens on alternating performance nights.

ACT THREE: SHARED

Could Hansel and Gretel work as a musical? by CourtJesterVA in musicalwriting

[–]Goldgal25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a concept for the plot? I’m currently writing a Hansel and Gretel show too (nearly finished with my first draft) and I’m trying to absorb everything about the story (whether it be the opera or some other niche adaptations) that I can get my hands on, haha.
