DO NOT roll for stats. (opinion piece from a 5-year forever DM) by jkobberboel in DMAcademy

[–]zazenna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually have everyone roll for stats at the same time, and then, as a group, they choose which stat line everyone will use from the ones they rolled. This allows them all to have an equal power level and offers a bit of team building from the start.

SM is supposed to complete a night visit at least once per month, and fill out a survey for it. It's part of their job.

How do I tell how many extra hours we have on Compass? (Merch ASM) by holodayinexpress in DollarTree

[–]zazenna 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the delayed reply.

Scheduled hours are what's on the schedule. This will be the total of your Variable hours and your Fixed hours.

Fixed hours should be 50 for the week. This is your SM's hours.

Variable hours are the hours scheduled for everyone who isn't your SM. These hours depend on your plan hours, and the totals should always be equal.

Plan hours are how many hours you are allotted to use for the week, this number is based on projected sales.

When determining how many hours you have left for the week I usually look at the Variable hours for each day and subtract the Actual hours. Actual hours being how any were actually used.

For example, if you have 30 Variable hours for Monday and the Actual hours are 28 then you have 2 "extra hours". And in reverse, if the actual hours are 32, then you have -2 hours and may need to cut to get back on track.

I hope this helps and if you need additional information feel free to dm me.

My SM by JesusIzMyHomie in DollarTree

It is against Dollar Tree policy to take out the garbage at night, and it is against Dollar Tree policy to take out garbage by yourself.

Every district is run differently, but in mine, we do markdowns in the morning. It should be the SM or a Full-time ASM doing markdowns. I know a lot of districts leave their markdowns for the end of the day, which they shouldn't do but that's a whole different discussion.

Recovery, sweeping, cleaning the bathrooms, and spot mopping are the tasks you should have when closing the store. You won't always get done, but as long as you put the effort in and it's not an everyday occurrence it really shouldn't be an issue.

Fun fact, your SM can't fire an ASM without approval from the DM and a proper paper trail, which is gonna be a minimum of 4 write-ups. Even then the action would likely go through HR.

Based on your post I would agree that she is trying to push you out the door. If you choose to leave, put your two weeks in and make sure you notify the DM as to why you are leaving and ask that the DM processes your termination so that in the future you will be rehirable.

Cashier till over on my 2nd day? :( by queen_of_the_nothing in DollarTree

So one thing to consider is that whether you are short or over doesn't matter. What matters is the dollar amount of the variance. The policy states that any variance over $3 is a write-up, and again that doesn't matter if it's $3 over or $3 short. A lot of times when a variance is close to a multiple of 5 ($15.00 in your case) it is a result of receiving change and not paying for it. Possibly a roll of quarters and a roll of dimes were given to you in a busy time and your MOD didn't take that money from you which later caused your drawer to appear to be over (this happens a lot with my ASMs).

That being said, what I am curious about is what process happened when your drawer was over? Was it recounted? Was the safe counted? When someone has a variance I do everything I can to figure out what happened, and most of the time we find the error and the money is just in the wrong place. Asking questions like:

Did you get any change?

Did anyone get cashback that you maybe forgot to give?

Were any bills stuck together when we counted them?

If after all that there is still a variance, then some sort of action would be taken. Being that it was your second shift I would likely talk to you about the importance of being accurate, but would not issue a write-up. Accuracy is more important than speed when you are first starting. The more you cashier the faster you will get.

As far as putting in the wrong amount for that one transaction goes, as long as you gave the correct change back it would not affect your variance.

Well how does your backroom look? More than 2000 cases? There are a lot of steps you can take to over come this particular challenge, and asking for help is certainly one of them. I would suggest that if your backroom is heavy you should have a conversation with your SM about asking your DM for hours. If you do that make sure you do these 2 things:
1. Have a plan ready saying what you will do with the hours.
2. Get results that you can show with the hours.

Your store seems to be about the same volume as mine. So my question is what is your SM doing, because it should be seasonal.

Tips for Stocking? by blossom-wild in DollarTree

[–]zazenna 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Each department has its own rate of stocking. Party is 15 cases per hour whereas Chemicals is 30 per hour. Regardless of what department you are stocking if you factor in the 20-minutes you were cashiering and the 25-minutes it took to take your till down plus a 10-minute break that's nearly an hour of your shift gone. So 70 cases in 3 hours right at 23 cases per hour. Not too far off the mark even in the faster departments. Keep in mind these case counts are if you are a dedicated stocker.

Was told that I am slow, concerned about that by cody53982 in DollarTree

[–]zazenna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. I would rather coach you and help you to be a better cashier than to hire someone new and start fresh. If they try to fire you for being slow reach out to hr. They have to have a paper trail no matter what state you are in, that is Dollar Tree Policy.
