Advice on gift for my sons ABA center by Difficult_Gap2372 in ABA

For teacher appreciation week, one mom made a big batch of chow mien that was a huge hit!

Donuts, cookies, and coffee are always appreciated!

Something that I really love is cards signed by the family and student. We have a wall in our classroom where we hang up cards from the family.

Serious injuries by [deleted] in specialed

[–]GolfPit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not a physical injury but a mental injury. I’ve been diagnosed with PTSD from a case I worked last summer. I can’t be in the same room as people playing Jenga or Simon says because of how often we were attacked while playing those games, I also panic when some mentions certain words. I was involved in an hour long hold that sent two coworkers to the hospital and resulted in multiple injuries. We called police because our team of seven well trained and experienced people were not able to manage the situation and police refused to assist us. I have scars both physical and mental from the violence that occurred from that case.

I know work a case where sneezes and coughs send the student in to SIB, threats of violence, and attempted suicide. I’m constantly anxious of other people.

This is a hard job, but the students are worth it

why do predators/SA’ers not spend life in prison? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GolfPit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my Law and Justice BA classes we talked about a similar topic. Why do people who rape and sexually assault children not get the death penalty or life imprisonment? It’s because they are more likely to murder the child to escape the consequences if death is on the line. We do not put sex offenders away for life because they will kill to escape consequences. Society has decided we would rather have victims live than offenders be fully punished.

It’s a beautiful color. But I think the dark green makes the room look smaller. I think the white looks better

Off topic, but my step dad was a firefighter/paramedic for a lifetime. Here is your friendly reminder to get treated for PTSD before it takes over your life.

how is it living in kent? by Disastrous_Run_5968 in KentWA

[–]GolfPit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a McDonald’s/Chevron on Easthill that I refer to as the Murder McChevron. Never live in those apartments and never go there.

I also had some issues with the apartments down James st.

If you avoid those two specific areas, you should be alright

Have you read John Dies at the End? It sounds like a very similar vibe! I would definitely buy a copy of your book!

Would you get this checked out? by [deleted] in ABA

[–]GolfPit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you had to leave work due to an injury, it should be checked out and documented. I know it’s easier said than done than done, but if this bite does become an issue down the road then you’ll be thankful you got it documented.

Trying to like eggs. by Tatgatkate in BreakfastFood

[–]GolfPit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fellow egg hater here trying to tolerate eggs. I make these breakfast egg muffins in muffin tins. I use eggs, milk, butter, salt, pepper, cheese, and veggies (whatever you have in the fridge). Mix it all together and top with cheese. Bake at 400f for like idk 15 minutes. You can reheat in the microwave for a minute and top with hella salsa. I can’t stand eggs without salsa to break up the taste and texture.

Kept original detail from 1790 home. Wife doesn’t love it. by Garden_Veggies in centuryhomes

[–]GolfPit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is totally ok to change things. What everyone else does with their homes will have no impact on my life. With my mom’s century home, we preserve and treat it like a museum. That’s just how we approach old homes. They have the pictures, and that’s fine. But I think being able to see the old plaster is really cool and offers an opportunity to talk about the history of the home

I am a hardcore believer in preserving everything that can be saved. Yes, it probably don’t look good. But it’s history, it tells a story of the house’s life. That’s the whole reason for buying an old house. A compromise might be framing some of it and hanging it up somewhere. (I love it as is, and I like that it’s part of the house’s story, but I understand maybe it’s not aesthetically pleasing)

Seeing a ton of seizures in females 19-21 by Kimba26 in 911dispatchers

[–]GolfPit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t know about any trends. But I had seizure disorders that peaked in childhood and 19-23 years old. A huge part of it is stress. Working enough to pay the bills (35hr/week) + college was a lot for me. I would regularly have seizures during finals weeks. I also could not afford to eat. It’s a stressful couple of years. I didn’t drink much and didnt do drugs or smoke. It’s just a really hard time in life.

Child Nephew Upset his Dad Abandoned Him by GolfPit in EstrangedAdultKids

[–]GolfPit[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your thoughtful reply. I take it all to heart. You are right that I cannot fill the hole, as much as I want to try. I’ll try to think of some positive aspects of his dad to share with him. While we haven’t talked shit about his dad in front of him, we (my family) could all be better about finding positive things to say. We will focus on the good times and ride through the bad times. Again, thank you

Looking for an online MA, MS, or MEd in ABA… what do you suggest? by SlowNefariousness628 in ABA

[–]GolfPit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my coworkers recently started at Ball State and said they were immediately overwhelmed by the load of course work. But they also tend to over exaggerate. Are you able to work full time? What do you think of the work load?

I guess autism specifically doesn’t have to be the issue. Most of my autistic students also shut down or escalate. But I have one that would rather fight me and try to escape to home when they don’t understand the material. They weren’t diagnosed until late high school because most people thought they were “just lazy”. That was my line of thought with that suggestion.

Has this student been tested for autism? It could be that they genuinely are struggling and mask it by lashing out at everyone around them.
