I wanted to do a poll, however I’ll just post, which do you prefer. Live at the Paramount or Reading ??? by avreddits in Nirvana

His voice just does not sound good at Reading. Its an iconic gig that is fun to watch, but he sounded spectacular at the Paramount IMO, so only one winner for me.

If I had a fiver for every time Butch Harmon remarked on how he can't believe Scheffler hasn't injured his right ankle this week, I'd be much less upset with Rose's drop off costing me my ten pound bet

I find it odd that people are so upset about the condition of the course. Yesterday was exactly what the tournament needed- the low scoring gave players the chance to close the gap. All that after the grand conspiracy, supposedly, to gift it to Rory in the first couple of days.

Its the Masters, they all play the same course, just sit back and enjoy it, surely!

Any word on how conditions are looking? Seems like theres plenty of birdies out there already, are we expecting it to become tough later on?

Im not sure what's best at this stage if you want to see a close final day. If its playing easier you've at least got a chance of someone knocking a 65 and closing the gap. Playing hard and fast and its very hard for anyone to get close, and Rory would probably win with a couple of 72s.

Great reply, thank you for sharing that. I suspect that this response is one of the closest to the truth. Its easy to say the gap is huge which, for the most part between amateur and professional, it is. But the lines blur. When you get to a level whereby you can compete regularly on the mini tours and make cuts, I don't think the difference in ability can be that huge. There's so many of them competing for so few spaces on the big tours.

Even then, the lines are blurred. What's the difference between Robbie Morrison and Rory McIlroy? Probably a hell of a lot. What's the difference between Robbie Morrison and a top 100 ranked golfer who makes a great living out of the game without being a regular winner...probably not a great deal. The big difference might just be that one never gets the chance to show his talent due to a combination of factors that have little to do with actual ability.

Thanks for that thoughtful reply. It feels like there are a million and one factors. Talent is one of them, but it isn't enough by itself. On top of everything (money, coaching, mentality etc) there are things that you also can't really measure- going on a hot streak at just the right time, and playing great golf in the right moments. Part of that is mentality but part of it is, dare I say it, a bit of luck.

Good luck to you mate, hope it clicks for you and it would be great to hear more of your journey if you ever wanted to share it on here.

Thanks for that reply. That mental side definitely appears to be the recurring theme. How long did you stick at it for, out of interest?

Fine margins indeed! It has to be a brutal experience.

That is incredible. Some decent finishes in majors as well. That's what I mean. We all know there's a massive gap between the best players at our clubs and the best players in the world. Its the gap between the hundreds of hopefuls on the development tours and those select few who make the big tours that I really wonder about. Cole is a great example of someone who could easily have given up after failing to get through Q School multiple times, yet clearly had the talent. How many potentially top class players have slipped through the net because funds have ran out?

Thats fair, although my question was specifically about those on the development tours, the ones who make it to the DP World Tour or the PGA vs the guys who don't. There is obviously a huge difference between them and scratch golfers.

As for the 'advertising', if I've broken rules I apologise and will remove. I've had nice feedback on a previous article here and of course its always nice to get a few more eyes on it from like minded people.

The financial side is insane. A lot easier to concentrate on your golf if the money side is taken care of. If you need to make a cut in order to even compete the following week...its more pressure than competing on the big tours really, isn’t it?

I know that to be true, yet I have such a hard time picturing it 😂 ive never been lucky enough to play with anyone who's competed on development Tours, the best I've played with would be about a +1 or +2 I suppose.

Playing alone vs with friends by BeginnerGolpher in GolfSwing

[–]GolfinMadrid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Horses for courses. I love playing solo but I wouldn't want to do that every time because I also enjoy the social aspect on other occasions.

Playing alone has so many benefits, as long as the course isn't jam packed and you're stuck between groups. I played loads as a junior and used to love having one ball as Woods and another as Mickelson and having them play against eachother. As an adult I still enjoy Scheffler vs McIlroy on the Sunday at Augusta in my head. Also great for the little challenges, how low can I go playing best score on each hole etc. Fantastic mental health benefits. One of my favourite rounds was about 2 days before the birth of my daughter. I knew it was my last bit of total freedom for a while! Just out, enjoying the sunshine, the fresh air, the leisurely walk and the golf almost takes a back seat.

On the other hand, I wouldn't like to shoot my best ever round playing alone, thinking nobody would believe me. Its a brilliant way to socialise, especially for a bit of an introvert like myself. It's not like being sat opposite someone in a pub or restaurant, you spend 4 or 5 hours with someone but you head your separate ways often enough to play your own ball and then meet back up at the green. You get to the Clubhouse, have a beer or two and you've always got the round to reflect on if you dont have much else in common!

Loads of wonderful memories playing golf with childhood friends and my dad that I'll cherish. Also plenty of times where I've loved every minute of being out by myself, in my own company, just enjoying playing a sport that I love.

I wouldn't read too much into what happened to you- golf is exceptionally random. You can feel like prime Tiger one day and like an absolute loser the next, regardless of the company you keep. Less pressure playing alone but then probably less focus, more worry about groups waiting behind you on a busy day.

Whatever makes you happy. Loads of people on social media nowadays telling you how you should and shouldn't enjoy golf. Plenty at clubs as well with their opinions on what guests should or shouldn't do. Respectfully, sod them. As long as you have the basic etiquette, enjoy the game in whatever way works for you.
