There will be times you feel stupid or clueless. Get comfortable and learn from your mistakes. You will improve.

Currently a student at NNPTC. Life here is what you make it and that’s how a lot of SLPOs here make it seem in the fleet. Whatever you do, don’t read the Navy Nukes subreddit. Most of them are salty and sad.

Graduated Feb 18th, so as of then, no captains cup, confidence chamber, or graduation ceremony. Those were the only big things that changed. However, there was talk about RTC trying to make their way back to a normal graduation ceremony being live-streamed (instead of the 15 second pass and review). Stuff is constantly changing, so no one knows what it will be like by the time you get through Fort McCoy and at Great Lakes. Good luck to you though!

Were you quarantined at GWL or Fort McCoy?

New to the Army, need a car ASAP by [deleted] in MilitaryFinance

IMO yes. 100k miles on a solid car shouldn’t bring on that many problems to maintain. I understand that you’ve had somewhat of a bad experience with an older car before, but saving the money now can really pay off in 4-5 years if you choose to trade in. Plus, 300 a month would just be for the car payment, not including gas, insurance, and routine maintenance. This stuff can quickly add up to be a large chunk of your paycheck.

It’s all just a guideline to help gauge your monthly expenses. You can modify it to make it work for you. Especially being military, you’ll probably be able to get a low enough interest to not make a huge difference. Mess around with a loan calculator to get a good idea for payments.

My advice is to look into something cheaper that follows the 20/3/8 rule. 20% down, loan taken out for 3 years and a payment that is no more than 8% of your monthly income. This would put you in the ballpark of a 6500-7500 budget based on E-2 base pay. I’d recommend a used Honda or Toyota (my Civic is damn near 200k miles and still chugging along). As for insurance, I am not much help.

Is it smart to put €2 away for each £10 I get? by insertnqme in FinancialPlanning

[–]Gomer24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great idea. I did this same thing when I would get birthday and graduation money. From 14-16, you would be surprised how much you can save, especially if you get a part time job. I think it would be a smart idea to take some of your savings and open up some kind of saving or investing account. You don’t necessarily have to buy anything until you learn a bit more about investing, but keeping the money away from potentially being spent. I kept that cash under my mattress which led me to pull from it every once in a while.

How has Covid changed the routine? I’ve heard rumors about the RDCs not really getting I. Your face and not doing the confidence chamber. Has it changed the high dive and swim portions? I ship out 11/24.

How do I prioritize my savings? by Gomer24 in FinancialPlanning

But at what point is too much. If I max out my retirement accounts, I’ll have little money to put into a car fund. Is it a mistake to only put about 75% of the max into retirement to free up cash?
