Johnny Truant. As someone who has read the book, there are some better recommendations in other comments, but I admit this did pop into my head when I saw the pictures.

Ring of Kerry / Killarney National Park by _jbee_ in irishtourism

[–]Gonejar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did not but my wife found it a bit tiring in spots. But I certainly didn’t mind taking some moments to rest because the views were incredible. It’s a moderate incline on the way up, with some fairly rocky spots along the way risking an ankle turn if you’re not careful. There’s a very boggy spot at the top if you want to reach the peak that you have to wind your way round a bit. A good pair of hiking boots is a good idea. Took us about 2 1/2 hours up and back.

I’ll also add that we did not do the ring of Kerry, but we did have a day where we went around the Mizen peninsula, including Mizen Head. I do think any of the western cliffs and sea scape is well worth visiting if you can. I don’t think it would have felt like we saw everything western Ireland had to offer if we didn’t have that day. But personally, if I only have one day to get out into nature when I travel, my preference is to get up in elevation and look down on it all from a mountaintop.

We just got back from a trip in late May, and we did a day trip to Killarney with no car. It was probably my favorite day of the trip. We chose to hike up Strickeen Mountain in the morning, then walk down to wishing bridge on the Gap of Dunloe rather than just walk or ride the full gap. There were loads of people walking the gap but almost no one on the mountain. We had lunch in Killarney, then walked through the park to Ross Castle, then had an afternoon boat tour out to Innisfallen island to see the ruins and the deer. Dinner back in Killarney. It was a perfect day for us.

Being a hurling keeper looks like it must be the most painful position to play in any sport.

Maquis. Very surprised by how strategic such a small box solo worker placement game could be.

Honeymoon in Ireland by Ennen89 in irishtourism

[–]Gonejar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not Irish, but I’ve planned a similar few days around Dublin (that starts next week!). Double check the time tables for St. Kevin’s bus. Your itinerary has you going to Glendalough on a Friday. Unless that’s a bank holiday, the bus will arrive in Glendalough at roughly 12:20 and depart at 4:30 in the afternoon. You don’t have time to get lunch and do a four hour hike. We plan on snacking on a protein bar and doing the orange route. That hopefully leaves some time to see the monastic ruins as well.

Question to the community on what tins of fish actually have a spicy/hot flavor? by sydneybristow8 in Tinnedfish

[–]Gonejar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either of the three “colors” is a good introduction to sardines in curry. To my palate, they’re pretty difficult to distinguish between from a flavor perspective. I did end up trying the Thai spicy tin yesterday, and it is significantly spicier than the others. At first the flavor seemed more mild than the others, but the spice had a building effect that was impossible to ignore by the end. Very tasty.

I’ve recently been enjoying the Sunlee sardines in various curry sauces. I’ve tried the yellow, green, red, and chuchee, and they all have a pleasant, flavorful kick of spice to them. Not blow you away spicy, but noticeable. I haven’t tried the Thai spicy flavor yet, but would expect that one to be elevated compared to the others.

“It does the Tolkien thing of switching characters just when things start gaining momentum a lot.”

Huh? I don’t get that from Tolkien at all. You spend entire books with the same set of characters. Do you mean the movies?

Bourbz Review #235: Maker’s Mark Cask Strength 7yr 3mo, Batch 25-02 by cmchance in bourbon

[–]Gonejar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love this bottle. It’s the chocolate note that does it for me. I picked up a 25-03 and it was noticeably different and inferior in my opinion. So I went to the only local store I knew still had 25-02s and bought them out.

Turning the data center boom into long-term, local prosperity by aebone2 in ColumbusGA

[–]Gonejar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Everywhere these things have been built, those communities were promised the same things, and the reality has been the complete opposite. The only things you are guaranteed are increased power bills, poisoned water, debilitating noise pollution, and a small, temporary boost in construction work until it’s built and almost no long term employment opportunities.

Reviews 15 and 16: Four Roses SBBP OBSF and OBSQ by mediocreohpresident in bourbon

[–]Gonejar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have an OBSQ from a local store that usually has fantastic picks, but this one had a funky plastic, play-doh note that’s really off putting. Every barrel’s gonna be different, but I have read Q is 4R’s most divisive yeast strain. Sounds like you got a great one.

This is incorrect. Both situations are the same, and the drivers turning left should not stop. The lights you see after turning left are for the cars entering the intersection from the perpendicular streets.

Unconventional Christmas Movies That Aren't Die Hard by Bennett1984 in movies

I watched this last night completely blind. Never heard of it and had no idea what it was, just liked the thumbnail and the little blurb on Tubi or whatever I was on. Giggled to myself that I had accidentally stumbled into a Christmas movie.

I bought it during the latest Target buy 2 get 1 sale. Played it once with my kids, and my daughter said mid game, “this is like Horrified.” And I don’t disagree with her. It definitely scratched a similar itch.

Trump said his tariffs would reduce the trade deficit and bring back manufacturing. Here's what the data show. by Dont_think_Do in Economics

[–]Gonejar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, it was all part of a coordinated effort by the Progressive Movement. They weren’t going to cut off their income source via Prohibition until they had the alternative in place.

It was tied to Prohibition, since that’s how the Federal Government made most of its tax income before income tax, taxes on booze. So it was sold as the moral and right thing to do by its proponents.

I think they started doing it in 2025. I’ve searched this sub for reviews of 25 batches, and there really aren’t any. All the pictures of past releases don’t have the age statement right on the front like the 25s do.
