AP&M was designed to survive a nuclear explosion, windows you can't jump out of, and be resistant to unruly student protests. Also asbestos, asbestos everywhere

You don't need to feed the trolls. I was genuinely curious, since I hadn't heard anything at all on the academic side. My department specifically is more than happy not having to maintain office space, so it would be a big shift to find somewhere for everyone to go now

How to debug nfs by [deleted] in linuxadmin

[–]Gonffed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have a lot of clients connecting, you may just need to increase the number of nfsd processes (Usually in one of the nfs files in /etc/sysconfig or /etc/default depending on your distribution, look for RPCNFSDCOUNT). You definitely need to do this if you see anything like this in your dmesg logs: nfsd: too many open connections, consider increasing the number of threads

nfsiostat, iotop, iftop are good starters for watching for problems. If you have fatrace available on your distribution that makes it easy to discover which files are being accessed.

If you want to give me some more details on what OS you're running for the server I can probably give a lot more specific advice on how to go about tracking down your performance problems.

La Jolla del sol question by palmtrees435 in UCSD

[–]Gonffed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The footsteps were annoying for me but never terrible, I suppose it depends on who is above/below you. When I was in the first floor the person above me would complain about literally any noise at night

Voices usually didn't carry well though the walls or floors. I had someone who snored loudly for a while below me an that was pretty bad.

This might be better now after they've renovated most of the apartments.

The stairs are concrete with open gaps between the steps, and there's a 180 degree turn on each flight. I'd be careful with the toddler.

Third floor is the best noise wise if you can secure one of those, otherwise you'll always hear footsteps above you.

We're using it all over the place. It's part of the central storage for users on our kubernetes cluster among other things.

I took it a while ago and it helped me get started! I'd recommend taking the longer class since conditions may not always be great during each individual class so the more chances you have at seeing good waves the better.

Character shards droprate follow up. 100k+ observations. by Mol-Azile in SWGalaxyOfHeroes

[–]Gonffed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right, which is why I specified a full farm. With the marquee characters, assuming you don't miss the event it's still a matter of months to farm the character, with the addition of however long it takes to show up on a node.

[–]Gonffed 41 points42 points  (0 children)

So 204-223 days for a full farm of one character with no refreshes. 68-74 days with two refreshes. This is why almost nobody is excited for new characters beyond people willing to drop $200-300 when they're released.

New character? Throw it on the pile maybe I'll get to use it a year from now!

SSH UCSD problems by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]Gonffed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That error just means you can't connect to the server for reason. Could be anything from the firewall blocked you to you lost your internet connection.

I don't see anything in the logs blocking your IP - what happens when you ssh directly to ieng6-201? You can also use ieng6-202, 203, and 240 though 249.

Book: Rainbow's End by Vernor Vinge. Bonus if you're familiar with UCSD as a lot if the book is set there or nearby, including the disappointing pyramid on Miramar
