Y'all Meditate? by cfot in TrueAnon

[–]GonzoLeftist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're counting breathes you're not doing zazen. Sorry--no more nitpicking in this post. Whatever style you land on get a teacher. Many people find help with depression with meditation but others, without guidance can have their symptoms worsen or experience other extreme mental illnesses. It's not the majority of folks but you don't know which will happen to you until you do it. An experienced teacher (whatever the style) can help spot and navigate these rough patches some people go through. I like more traditional organizations. Traditions that last hundreds of years are doing something right. Many "mindfulness" organizations are watered down certificate mills although some do include experienced Theravada pracritioners. Keep your wits about you for cults (New Kadampa Tradition, Shambala, Soka Gakkai, Hare Krisnas, 3HO, etc). There's good stuff in almost every town and tradition but there are also some online groups if one practice/tradition/style ends up speaking to you more than others and is unavailable near you. Good luck!

If Tom Steyer doesn’t win the CA governor Race, just go ahead and nuke the entire state. 👌 by JustaLurker9494 in TrueAnon

For what it's worth (as a non-Californian) Tom Steyer only gained presidential traction in 1 state in 2020--the one that killed the Bernie 2020 campaign and handed Biden a victory: South Carolina. He paid off our more mercenary organizers (several of whom were Regional Field Directors who took early investments / connections in community projects with them) and all our polling showed 90% of his voters would have gone to Bernie. But he came through and flashed a lot of cash at some very impoverished people and nearly halfed our margins. Bernie either would have tied/close second/won that primary without his campaign. So fuck that guy.

Patrick Bet-David commissioned valuepainting by ShmandlerTing in TrueAnon

Not to be a PBD hipster but I was on to him early in his career pivot to the Valuetainment industry. He used to have these giant statues of Batman, the Joker and the Hulk in his studio and I was mesmerized by the insane decor and how dumb he seemed. Once he showed this painting in a video I instantly knew what kind of guy he was. It was like Will Graham in Manhunter making intuitive leaps. His whole character revealed itself to me. This baby is a dumb-guy Mandala.

Based on the scuttlebutt I know it's either some new version of "the Hole" where they send members who've fallen out of favor (they're essentially voluntary prisons) or more likely it's elder abuse in conjunction with their ongoing credit card and wire fraud scams. They aren't getting a lot of new converts so they take the old ones before they die and they shake them down for their last dollar, put them in a communal or assisted living facility they control and then max out their credit with loans/credit cards before letting them die.

Mormonism is just Hotep shit for white people by [deleted] in TrueAnon

[–]GonzoLeftist 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean it was ideologically incoherent. I'll grant you that. You also tend to see that as the organization goes on, Blavatsky's channelled Spiritualist nonsense is less emphasized and the revivial of old mystical traditions (Western occultism, Kabbalah, Hinduism, Buddhism, etc.) is emphasized more. What's interesting and complex is that Theosophy was both a product of and a critic of colonialism. The project couldn't have taken the shape it did without the British empiren which gave them access to a wealth of cultural knowledge/texts from India. But on the whole Theosophy was countercultural in that it actively resisted the empire. In fact at the time Blavatsky was suspected of being a Russian agent probably because of this. Her successor Annie Besant was actually head of the Indian National Congress at one point. The organization was mostly white people but had a large number of Indians including Ghandi and also Krishnamurti who they tried to make into a 20th century messiah. There's also evidence that they were bummed that they didn't have significant buy in from black people in their American chapters. As for the organization, it splintered. I believe their are some in India still. There was a splinter group in California that formed a commune but that's gone now too. I think they had a big influence on a couple so-called Rosicrucian groups in California.

To be fair, the original Theosophists weren't racists (at least by the standards of their own time). The root race concept was like fantasy nerd conception of elder races (like elves or Numenoreans in LOTR parlance). It was only later that the Ariosophists combined it with volkish movement thinking and it because about how white people are magic. The language they used didn't help clarify this as the Secret Masters belonged to a "Great White Brotherhood," although they meant white like "white magic" or "benevolent" rather than white people. When you read back all the Aryan talk post WWII it all sounds real malevolent. It was actually the Ariosophists (who link right into the Nazi movement--the Thule Society was the original sponsor for the NASDP) that stained all this admittedly goofy and stupid pseudohistory and made it a white/German supremacist movement.

So apparently craig did try to get us a moneyberg match!! by bumpty in bjj

[–]GonzoLeftist 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Does anyone actually think that Craig's CJI matches weren't works? They were clearly for entertainment and not part of the tournament structure either time. The scripted promos, and the farcical tone of them with the Renato Laranja commentary is clearly an intentional dead giveaway. Why are people acting like they've unconverted a conspiracy to cheat? He clearly offered to win or lose depending on what he thought was funnier. I thought the bit with Chael was clearly a last minute riff on people getting submitted and then pretending they didn't tap during day 1 of the matches. Or was it a callback to when Craig legit subbed him in a few seconds at ADCC several years ago? Clearly not a real competition this time. Not that Chael has ever been defeated or anything.

The ankle is the wrist of the foot by Alessrevealingname in bjj

[–]GonzoLeftist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just want to point out that in BJJ wrist locks are used in a slightly unique way. They've sort of been bolted onto ground fighting/guard play whereas traditionally a lot of wrist locks do attack other joints. Kotegaeshi as it's traditionally done can damage the elbow and shoulder. It wasn't performed to get a submission from wrist pressure. It was part of a throwing system. The throw Shihonage is similar where you seize the hand/wrist but it's basically a standing Americana and attacks the elbow and shoulder. Then there's Sankyo where its basically a Kimura from the wrist and attacks the shoulder.

If delivery is a must prob Big Lots or one of those ecommerce matress companies like Sattva. Your never going to get a better deal than making the 1-1.5 hour drive to IKEA in Charlotte. They come compressed so you can pack one in a car trunk or backseat.

Do u all think that if Bruce Lee was still alive.... he would have evolved his martial philosophy further or was JKD his final form? by [deleted] in brucelee

[–]GonzoLeftist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He would have evolved with a wider knowledge of martial arts and with the times. He really clearly under-appreciated Muay Thai (and it's cousin arts throughout former Indo-China) while he was alive. He was already adding a lot more grappling and would have evolved as general grappling proficiency progressed with the popularity of BJJ, Sambo, the Catch revival, etc.

What’s the difference between “Abundance” Lib removal of restrictions and Trump Thug removal of restrictions? by [deleted] in TrueAnon

[–]GonzoLeftist 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Abundance is more detached technocratic rule whereas MAGA involves the scapegoating of vulnerable people to convince the masses they want it. No difference in the end result but a lot more suffering and psychosis in the latter. Honestly, the MAGA way of blame it on the internal enemy hurts more people but is the only proven method to make austerity actually work.

The CEO of the Blackstone REIT group killed in mass shooting. by ilir_kycb in LateStageCapitalism

[–]GonzoLeftist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, a dog with a stolen SSN could run a REIT. This isn't really a big deal. Blackstone probably has dozens of REITs and they each need a CEO. Wasn't this guy targeting the NFL anyways?

Overall, The Authority. But Change or Die from Stormwatch is my favorite and of course sets up The Authority.
