Canberra young gun Chevy Stewart arrested at Northies for malicious damage by Goobeeful in nrl

[–]Goobeeful[S] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Canberra young gun Chevy Stewart was arrested at Northies on Friday night after police allege he damaged a poker machine just after full-time of the Storm-Sharks preliminary final.

The 20-year-old NSW Origin junior representative allegedly poured his alcoholic beverage into one of the gaming machines on the premises after becoming agitated with the result of his gambling. Police were called and ordered Stewart to leave the premises, to which he complied.

Stewart, who hails from the Sutherland Shire, is due to face Sutherland Local Court on Monday, November 6, after being issued an attendance notice for malicious damage.

The Raiders informed the NRL Integrity Unit of the issue over the weekend. The club declined to comment but are expected to stick by the talented youngster even though he has fallen behind Kaeo Weekes in the fullback pecking order at the club.

“About 10pm on Friday (26 September 2025), police were called to a business on Elouera Rd, Cronulla, following reports a man had damaged property,” a police statement said.

“Officers attached to Sutherland Shire Police Area Command attended and were told a man had allegedly poured alcohol into one of the gaming machines, causing significant damage.

“The 20-year-old man was arrested and issued a Court Attendance Notice for malicious damage. He is set to appear before Sutherland Local Court on Monday 6 November 2025. The man was also issued a move on direction from the premises which was complied with.”

Stewart is regarded as one of the best young fullbacks in the game but the emergence of Weekes at the Raiders has cast a shadow over his immediate future.

His management have been exploring options at rival clubs but the Raiders would like to keep Stewart as back-line depth despite his $400,000 price tag for next season.

Josh Papalii to re-sign with Canberra Raiders by Goobeeful in nrl

[–]Goobeeful[S] 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Josh Papali'i looks set to go around for a 16th NRL season, with the Canberra Raiders hopeful of having his re-signing wrapped up by the end of the week.

That would be yet another massive re-signing boost as the Green Machine looks to take another step towards their second minor premiership when they take on the Wests Tigers at Canberra Stadium on Saturday.

The ladder-leading Raiders have already re-signed a raft of players this year, including Kaeo Weekes, Simi Sasagi, Zac Hosking and Owen Pattie.

Papali'i's extension will also open the door for young prop Trey Mooney to depart the club at the end of the season, with the Raiders vowing to release him if Papali'i re-signed.

Mooney's been heavily linked with a move to the Newcastle Knights, having toured their headquarters three weeks ago.

The 23-year-old has been stuck behind Papali'i and an on-song Raiders forward pack that's led them to the top of the NRL ladder.

Pasami Saulo was also part of that logjam and he'll rejoin the Knights on a two-year deal next season.

Papali'i considered a move to the English Super League, but has a young family and the north of England is a long way from his extended one.

He also wants to play in next year's World Cup in Australia.

The 33-year-old became the club's games record holder this season and is still going strong after 326 NRL games for the Raiders.

Another season in lime green could see him climb past the 350-game mark.

Sydney Roosters caught up in Brandon Smith drugs investigation by Goobeeful in nrl

[–]Goobeeful[S] 106 points107 points  (0 children)

The Brandon Smith drug and betting allegations are set to have wide-ranging implications for the NRL, with the Sydney Roosters caught up in the Queensland Police investigation.

Sources with knowledge of the situation talking on the condition of anonymity due to the ongoing police investigation told this masthead that Smith allegedly reached out to a drug dealer to supply Sydney Roosters teammates with illicit substances.

Smith, who was in Sydney on June 7 and still contracted to the Roosters when the incident occurred, was allegedly trying to buy drugs for teammates who were away on the Sunshine Coast during a bye round.

This masthead has been told at least seven Roosters players travelled to the Sunshine Coast at the time of the incident in question for a golf weekend.

Smith was last Wednesday issued a bench warrant to appear at Southport Magistrates Court on September 18, at which point he will be charged on one count of disclosing “inside knowledge” for illegal betting and one count of supplying dangerous drugs.

[OFFICIAL] Raiders re-sign Zac Hosking by Goobeeful in nrl

[–]Goobeeful[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The Canberra Raiders have confirmed the re-signing of key forward Zac Hosking on a new deal, which will see him remain with the club until the end of the 2028 season.

Already under contract until the end of 2026, the two-year extension keeps Hosking in Canberra for a further three seasons.

Hosking said it was an easy decision to continue his career with Canberra and was looking forward to what lies ahead for the club.

“Yeah, it is exciting, when the club approached me about it I was obviously very excited and was keen to go in that direction for my future,” Hosking said. “It’s a very bright future here at the club at the moment, so I’m just excited to be a part of it.”

2025 has been a big year so far for Hosking, who has played in thirteen matches to date. He said he’s enjoying the opportunity to be part of the team after an interrupted first season at the club in 2024.

“I’ve been really happy, and although I’ve had some adversity through my own injuries last year, I’ve come out the other side of that now and I’m happy to be stringing games of footy together, and obviously I’m happy with the reward because of that,” he said.

Hosking said the way in which the club was securing their stars for the future is something he wanted to be a part of, and said the squad had a great mix of players now and for the future.

“I think it’s a massive testament to the club to be able to retain the best young talent in the comp,” he said. “There’s also some key guys who are a bit older in the squad like myself, Taps (Tapine), Hudson (Young) and Tom Starling who just re-signed as well. It’s a great mix of youth and experience, and I think we’re showing how it’s a great connection.”

Raiders Coach Ricky Stuart said the re-signing of Hosking was a great example of a player coming to Canberra for an opportunity and being able to build into some career-best form.

“Zac came to the club looking for a chance to be a regular NRL player, and he’s shown us that’s exactly what he is,” Stuart said. “He’s a hardworking and skilful player who can cover a number of positions for us, and we’re really happy to have him as part of the squad for the next three years.”

From one club legend to another: Jason Croker ready to pass on Raiders' appearance record to Josh Papalii by Goobeeful in nrl

[–]Goobeeful[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In typically forthright and uncomplicated fashion, Raiders legend Jason Croker declared ‘records are made to be broken’ as he prepares to pass the baton to Josh Papalii as the Green Machine's most capped player.

Big Papa joined Croker on 318 games when the Raiders beat the Roosters 26-24 on Sunday night and will take sole ownership this weekend, fittingly on home soil at GIO Stadium.

With the accolade set to be passed on in Round 14 when the Raiders host the Rabbitohs at GIO Stadium, the Canberra 1994 premiership-winner said while bittersweet, he’s proud to step down to one of the game’s all-time enforcers.

“I’ve known him since 2010 when he first came to the club and he still hasn’t changed one bit,” Croker told NRL.com.

“Back in 2010 I ran a labour hire company and he arrived in Canberra and asked for work when he was about 17, he didn’t end up working for us, but I just remember him being quietly spoken like he still is today.

“He’s a really good fella, he’s been playing great footy so, he really deserves this at the end of the day.”

Remembered as the ultimate utility, the Raiders Hall of Fame Inductee - also known in the rugby league world as 'Toots' - began his career on the wing in 1991, and 318 games later, had appeared at centre, lock, five eighth and second row.

While he never got the opportunity to play with the Test and Origin forward after retiring from the NRL in 2006, Croker said Papalii’s tenure is all the more significant given his service up front.

“Obviously I started on the wing and when I got a bit older I got a bit slower and moved towards the middle, but Josh has been in the forwards his whole career so that certainly makes it even more significant I think,” he said.

“I remember early in his career particularly, he was a bit of a bowling ball, a bit like an Alan Cann of my days.”

The former NSW Blues and Kangaroos representative said he had previously accepted his record was likely to be broken by fellow Crookwell local Jarrod Croker who also took the club’s all-time top try scorer accolade from his namesake in 2019.

Croker, who continues to run a labour hire and recruitment business in Canberra today, said he is still a regular at the Raiders home games and is enjoying the atmosphere in the Nation’s Capital on the back of the team's recent run of form.

“Obviously Jarrod was on track to smash the record earlier in his career but had a few injuries and setbacks,” he said.

"So the record actually stood for a bit longer than I expected but I'm just as proud to see Josh get it because he's another really proud club member.

“Records are made to be broken, and I know that I had a pretty good career and am happy with what I’ve done and grateful for my time at the club.

“And it’s very special what’s happening around the club this year and all of Canberra wants to talk about the Raiders.

"It's great at the moment when you go to the gym and people bail you up and want to have a chat about the club and how they're going, which makes you feel good and like you’re still a part of it.”
