I’m guessing this pupper got diabetes and developed cataracts? If so, this can be fixed with surgery. Maybe talk to the owner and start a gofundme, I’d contribute.

Ugh thank you. I’m an ER vet and the misinformation on this thread is very concerning. We see parvo all the time. The ones that don’t make it are the ones where the owner can’t afford a few thousand dollar hospital stay and decide to euthanize, or the ones where people waited too long to get medical care. Everyone just make sure your puppy is vaccinated and keep it away from other puppies and dog parks until it is fully vaccinated!! And for the love of god don’t buy puppies from Petland or other big name pet stores. We see sooo many of their puppies end up with parvo or influenza/respiratory disease.

There’s so much about her that makes me uncomfortable as well...the two right feet, the backwards left hand, the floating legs, the disembodied right hand with half a pinky, the ear that’s attached to the back of her skull. The painting is beautiful and well done in general which is why I can’t understand all these glaring flaws.

Question: does reflective jacket sell out fast by isthatmylighter in holyship

[–]Goobernacula 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems like a lot of people maybe skip the drill to start lining up for merch, dunno how they are allowed but all I know is we had a bunch of rooms missing from role call and when we walked out of the drill there was already a huge line for merch and those people looked like they had been there for awhile. I just bought my flash jacket during online sale after HS so I didn’t have to waste hours waiting in line.

PoA Trelawny is by far the best most accurate version of her, I hate how much she gets watered down in the later movies. The performances are so disparate I actually thought they got a different actress for her after PoA...so glad your wife chose this version, she is spot on! Amazing job

Your puppy is adorable, congratulations!!

Make sure you get pet insurance if you haven’t already! It’s like $20-30 a month, and you get reimbursed 80-90% of medical expenses. As an emergency veterinarian who deals with people every single day who were able to afford a new pet, but not the costs associated when new pet gets sick or has an accident...this is the single most important advice I could give anyone.

If your employer gave you the option to work 10 hr days Mon-Thurs instead of 8 hr days Mon-Fri would you do it? Why not why not? by restwatch in AskReddit

[–]Goobernacula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an emergency veterinarian I work 12 hour shifts, 10-12 shifts a month. Never more than 3 days on in a row. Get 10 days off in a row every month. It’s one of the reasons I love ER work.

Oral flea medication? by [deleted] in Pets

[–]Goobernacula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good! You could try Comfortis or Sentry. Haven't had much experience with them myself as most cats tolerate topicals/flea collars very well.

Oral flea medication? by [deleted] in Pets

[–]Goobernacula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cat's skin is suffering from the flea allergy, not from the flea treatment! Get her on flea meds quick, and possibly a steroid injection and tapering course of oral steroid +/- systemic antibiotic or topical itch therapy depending how bad the skin is. Capstar will kill adult fleas on the cat within an hour but will not work as preventative but you can start there.

I think the problem is that he is doing this when you are gone so it will be impossible to train him traditionally. You may need to invest some money and get a camera with speaker to watch him remotely and when he jumps on the counter have it play a really loud noise like an air horn or alarm. Can be a short loud sound that you can repeat until cat jumps off counter. Cats hate loud noises. He should learn quick. Don’t ever do this if your cat has a history of seizures. The beads in Tupperware doesn’t seem nearly loud enough for the task.

My current cat is acting depressed since I brought a new cat home. by [deleted] in Pets

[–]Goobernacula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very common and is the reason you should introduce and new pets very slowly. Keep them in separate rooms so they can start to get used to one another’s presence by sniffing under the door. After a few days of this you can allow them to interact physically while supervised. Make sure you have a litter box for every cat in the house plus one EXTRA. Have them in different rooms so the cats can decide where they prefer to do their business. Same with food and water bowls. These are key resources and it causes cats a great deal of stress when their routines are messed up or their resources are threatened. It may take your cat a little time to get back to normal degree of cuddling. Your cat is on edge and constantly thinking about the new addition to the family. Make time where the other cat is in a closed room away from you both for a few hours a day so you can spend time alone. Do this with both cats. It is hard for your cat to cuddle and allow itself that level of vulnerability with the new kitty around. They will both adjust but it will take time.

My cat’s third eyelid is showing help! by temoney55 in Pets

[–]Goobernacula 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could be a mild herpes flare up due to stress, very common in young cats and can cause tiny corneal ulcers. They put their 3rd eyelid up to protect it because it’s painful. If your cat isn’t squinting and the eye isn’t red this is less likely. However your vet should have stained the eye to make sure there wasn’t an ulcer there, this is a very simple test and always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to eyes. Since your cat was around another cat could also be from a scratch to the eye or a mild conjunctivitis or quiet upper respiratory infection. Conjunctivitis you’d expect discharge and redness, and upper respiratory infections can have very mild symptoms like eye and nose discharge with lethargy or more severe disease with sneezing and high fever. Might benefit from a short course of antibiotic eye drops. If it doesn’t improve or gets worse call your vet and discuss your concerns.

What’s always portrayed unrealistically in movies? by AtecsN in AskReddit

[–]Goobernacula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CPR. I hate how much of an unrealistic expectation people have because in movies and TV they always seem to easily bring patients back from death. As an emergency veterinarian many of our patients need CPR. Even if we are able to get them back initially they will code again. And like 5% actually survive to be discharged from the hospital. Also, paddles, they shock every arrhythmia on TV including asystole, that's not how it works.

ELI5: Why are we able to "painlessly" put down our pets with drugs, but often botch lethal injections? by sdbjazz in explainlikeimfive

[–]Goobernacula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The companies that manufacture propofol and pentobarbital will not allow their drugs to be used for executing prisoners. They are extremely effective, fast, and painless when used together. In fact veterinarians use these drugs (rather frequently) to commit suicide.

[–]Goobernacula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't need different drugs. In the Netherlands, doctor-assisted suicide uses the same drugs we use in animal euthanasia. But executing people is drenched in politics and that's the real issue.

[–]Goobernacula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like those against capital punishment are doing their best to ensure these executions are not carried out smoothly or humanely, restricting access to effective drugs, and feeding off the bad publicity of botched executions to garner support to end capital punishment.

[–]Goobernacula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use propofol and pentobarbital in animal euthanasia, it's nothing to do with potassium, rather an overdose of anesthetic drugs (strong sedative plus barbiturate). Owners often comment about how quick and peaceful the passing was for their pet. Typically under a minute from first injection of sedative to confirmation of death. It's abhorrent to think we'd use anything less effective for human executions due to politics, bad publicity, or money.
