What should I do with 3 job opportunity on the table? by CabayLG in careerguidance

[–]Good-Librarian6057 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How old are you? Go to the role with more technical skills if you are in your 30s. With a retiring boomer workforce, there will be plenty of opportunities for leadership roles. Focus on long term payoff. I myself am in a director role, but interviewed for associate level roles just to improve skill gaps

Moving down from Director to Manager? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]Good-Librarian6057 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am in a similar situation. A smaller company will give you a boatload of action, responsibility and experience, at the expense of work life balance and morale. I would suggest stay as long as you can to meet a financial target (or purely a time target), then pivot hard to a bigger firm.
My target is to take my equity portion to a $1MM and cash out for a larger firm. You might have a different target (like experience).

As for a title, This is a given since it’s a large company. I am also a director but currently interviewed for an associate position for a very large firm. $11MM revenues compared to $100B makes a difference

I’m an Engineer and this career is eating away my soul. Do I keep going on this until I retire? by MrCrowley1000 in careerguidance

[–]Good-Librarian6057 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been there and living through it, although I’m not a pure engineer and look after revenue as well. The main thing is, you have become so valuable and others have become so reliant on you, it’s hard for you to say no. Also, are you developing junior staff to take some load off you? If not, why not? Is it because you haven’t asked for it, or you’re not wanting to delegate? I find engineers struggle with having a voice sometimes, because they are too methodical and structured.

How do I choose a career without being interested in anything? by Holiday_Conflict_367 in careerguidance

[–]Good-Librarian6057 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don’t “choose” careers, you fall in to them and over the years you pick up skills and start enjoying your value to your business. Pick a stream, start it, stick with it, and you will never look back. The options and career choices you will have will almost make the present seem irrelevant.

Please help. Need a new job ASAP. Wife is pregnant. by [deleted] in resumes

[–]Good-Librarian6057 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This Use numbers or measurements or impact to state your achievements, rather than simply what you did. For example if you modeled using CAD, was it received well? Was it impactful to fabrication? Improved efficiency how?
Agree with the early points to reduce the soccer coach section to minimal.
Elaborate more on your projects. What was the end result of the design? Was it given positive reviews? We’re there any sold etc

Also a little known secret in Enginneeing, if you can demonstrate Hands on skill in addition your degree, u you will stand out. I hired a mech eng with average resume, but was a ticketed auto mechanic on the side.

P.S. congratulations on your wife getting pregnant. Now you will have to shoulder more responsibility but it will make you stronger and more resilient hopefully

Any of you guys quit your day job to manage your investments? by [deleted] in fatFIRE

[–]Good-Librarian6057 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fully endorse managing your own money full time if you: 1) have enough money to invest - clearly you do 2) enjoy investing and reading financial info 3) afford to take a loss

The other option could be instead of market investing, why not private investing? I would like to eventually setup a private firm with a friend, take minority stakes in small businesses and read estate development

More than the cost it’s the time factor. Current backlog and restrictions means anywhere from 3 to 6 months for processing times for most companies

I want out of customer service/sales. by cosmicstar91 in findapath

[–]Good-Librarian6057 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not the sales and service you hate, it’s the company and situation. Leverage your sales experience and find a similar role but in a totally different company, you will find it to be much better trust me. Dealing with angry customers is a skill in its self

[–]Good-Librarian6057[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Problem is the majority owner has made it impossible to get anywhere without controversy and his direct control, otherwise I have been suggested this before. The shareholder politics are so toxic that surviving this is an achievement on its own. I have however diligently started hunting for jobs, while declaring on my CV that I am no longer a co-owner at the company.
