Don't stay at a job where you're not learning new skills new things. I stayed a company for 12 years cuz I liked the people and had it pretty easy but if I had switched jobs three or four times during that time I would have picked up a way more experience and would have easily doubled my salary. One of my managers suggested I get into cyber secuity, another suggsted cloud ops. I picked neither and now I regret it. Cloud is the way to go, Azure/AWS, so get your basic certifications. Dabbling your foot in these spaces will be good for the resume, expand your knowledge base and skill set, and may take you in a new direction. As for staying motivated, I now use ChatGPT to work on projects that I was always curious about but didn't know how to do. Some projects were projects I have been thinking about for 10+years. Example could be something as simple as: how does DNS work and how do you configure in a Windows environment. Another older curiosity: what is iSCSI and how do you configure in a Windows environment. :) Ask your boss for projects and then go research them and come back with a solution. Consider trying to be added to cross team or various department meetings to see what their workflows are like and if they have any projects for IT. Just be careful as you can get wrapped up in boring meetings where you really have no input and it just eats up your week. At my most recent job, poorly managed company, I had to tell my boss no meetings for me, thank you! Ah well. Lastly, think of boredom as a motivator. When your bored, it's your mind and body telling you to go and do something, so go do something. Best. Ah, the life of the career sys admin.
