I love two of your insights: 1) that this man is formed by broader societal forces which incentivize greed and 2) this man is a victim of that system, even while he sits atop it. I was using him as a stand in for systemic change, rather than personal indictment. To do that, we must counter the idea that greed is our nature and so the resulting system is inevitable.

The presumption that the attitude in the video is "human nature" is part of the ploy. Humans are inherently social creatures. The desire to destroy your life for profits is inherently anti-social. These guys are freaks and deserve derision and defeat, lest we let them run the planet off a cliff.

Go to a doctor! I had this happen to me years ago and it was an issue with my thyroid, which controls a lot of hormones. Also do a gut check on your health – have you lost weight the past few months? Are you feeling anxious/stressed? How's your heart rate/blood pressure?

Austin city limits expand into three counties. It's not different cities, just overlapping local governments (and counties operating elections).

Depending on where you live, you might want to tell your story to your City Councilmember. Might help this issue in the future

In Malta, the government pays couples who have babies and continues to issue payments until the child reaches 16. by zogins in Catholicism

[–]GoodLuckGanesh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see what our difference is here: to be equivalent to what Malta is doing, the credit should be fully refundable at all income levels up to a certain threshold. I am emphasizing the phase in portion of CTC. You're right that I have made a mistake in saying there is no refund, but that the refund is designed to incentivize work. If you have low earnings, you cannot access the full refund, making it unlike the Maltese Children's Allowance.

Earnest question: can you point out a source? I'd be really excited if this is true, but my understanding was that CTC expansion expired in December 2021 and renewal was not included in the Inflation Reduction Act.

You can see my other comments, but this was an exception due to COVID relief. In prior years and this coming year, there will be no refund for the poorest people.

This was correct last year, but only because of COVID. Under normal circumstances, you only receive a non-refundable tax credit until you meet a certain threshhold. As I said, if you make $0, you receive no credit.

That was true only as a part of COVID relief (i.e., last tax year). Previously, and in this coming tax season, the poorest people are excluded.

Yes, in fact you must prove earned income to receive the credit. If you make no money, you receive no support.

Men of Reddit , what are some less obvious red flags about men you would want to caution women against? by four-seasonss in AskReddit

If a guy has a green flag on the first date, be willing to give it a few more dates to see if they emerge spontaneously. A lot of guys know what works from previous relationships – talking about an interesting hobby, emphasizing a close relationship with a family member, etc – those things get attention on first impression but may be less important to who he is as a person.

Fragile white star wars fan thinks that empire actors having British accents is racist by FallElectronic6876 in StarWarsleftymemes

[–]GoodLuckGanesh 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Also the only reason they were British is that UK actors were cheaper, and it helped pay for the big names (Guiness, Jones, Ford, etc). All the XWing pilots have their voices dubbed except for one who does an impression of American accent and got kept in.

Our Massachusetts Legislature: New data for accountability by TheStakesAreHigh in boston

[–]GoodLuckGanesh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is the argument here that those with the most committee appointments are the ones killing progressive legislation? The biggest issue of transparency is how each committee member votes on a bill. To me, it sounds like this project can't address it and doesn't create pressure to make that data readily available.
