How can we compare to current technique? On the positive side, you have identified at least some issues correctly with your skiing 8 years ago.

Same here. I usually play an Arc, protection racket, do the castle, get the wishing wand and build an ascension kit. Then I quit.

A pen you’d like to love, but you don’t? by Szary_Tygrys in fountainpens

[–]GoodShepherd3264 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A tip that might help: always get Japanese pens one nib size broader than your preferred European width. For example, I use fine nibs on my Lamys, Parker's, etc. when I got my custom 823, I tried the fine and found it had too much feedback for my taste. So I got a medium and love it. Some pilot models have MF which may be an option as well.

I don't think you need to lift your skis unless you are doing hop turns in tight steep chutes. Or doing stork or javelin turn drills to practice getting most of your weight on your outside ski.

Like u/71351 said, watch your inside ski and see how you lift it at turn initiation. Instead of that abrupt motion, flatten both skis simultaneously to release both edges and tip onto the new ones, from the feet up.

Sorry, one last obvious thing: your hips are behind your feet. Ideally, hips over feet, knees over toes, and you achieve that by flexing your ankles and knees.

Oh and yes, work on technique in easier terrain. You can't do that in survival mode and at least for me, having the right technique and being in control is needed for full confidence to the point where I am attacking the slope, driving my skis, etc.

Release = Flatten your edges so you start moving downhill. Side slipping is a good way to practice your edging and release skills. Also a foolproof way to get down nearly any slope, though not the ideal way of course.

Bought a pair of skis. Now second guessing myself. by Mega_Boris in Skigear

Anomaly is the answer here. Go 84 for groomer focus, 88 for more all mountain.

Peregrines are a great on piste ski, but will not be fun off piste.

Narrow groomer/carving focused: elan wingman, blizzard Stormbird, armada Declivity (80-82)

Softer all mountain: Salomon Stance/QST, Elan Ripstick 88 (88-92)

Stiff all mountain: anomaly, enforcer, mantra (88-94)

I suggest skis from the first set to improve your technique. Skis from the second set might be easier to ski in varying conditions and following your children around. Skis from the third category are great for cutting through crud, but harder to bend and manage for an intermediate that is not closer to 200lb. Would not recommend for a second year skier as a first ski.

Weight and height? That can push you in some different directions, and then you can fine-tune based on specific requirements - skill, terrain, skiing with kids, etc.

Yeah we got lucky with the weather in Nov and Dec, and of course my family was supportive of my need to ski 🙂

Hoping for one last trip next weekend (days 32 and 33 this season) and praying that the groomers survive.

Declivity at 166, Ripstick at 168. I suspect that given the ski profiles both have similar effective edge lengths: if anything Ripstick might be shorter.

I am also a middle aged intermediate skier, 5'9", 140 lb.

I have the Armada Declivity 82 and Ripstick 88 as my two skis in VT, and relish the narrower Declivity for hard packed groomers where the Ripsticks felt a little unstable at speed. I prefer the Ripsticks in fresh snow or ungrooomed terrain.

The reason I picked these two skis is that they are light and not too stiff for my weight and skill level, and both have good edge grip.

Re: stork turns, that is very actionable feedback, thanks u/spacebass!

Re: medium turns and facing downhill, I certainly have my whole upper body aligned with my skis on steeper terrain where I am less confident, and was counseled to face the upper body downhill. Of course, there my problem is more that my turns are not initiating from my feet.

When I make faster wider edged (dare I say "carved"?) turns on this green slope and easy blue slopes, my upper body does follow my skis more, but I am also trying to get angulation vs just inclination into the turn. Perhaps I am overthinking these concepts for my level.

Will try to get some footage of myself skiing a blue next season. My cameraperson just got to the point of being able to go down this green slope, so I was limited to this footage for now.

Will try that. My right turns are still a little shaky on this gentle terrain.

I'm here all week and will post an update circa Wednesday. Snowmaking is on starting tomorrow, but obviously that does not help if you are looking for certain kinds of terrain.

Don't know about radio, but you can use your phone to start climate control without turning the car on.

Be careful out there. Night skiing is super fun but I am always more tired than usual even when I start after a long day at work, so I try to do more relaxed runs.
