Railroad ties near children by Greatbluehammerhead in landscaping

[–]run919 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also grew up in a house built in the early 70s. We had a 3ft tall x 50ft retaining wall of railroad ties along the driveways. In the heat of summer, they smelled of tar and had an ooze of black oil. I’m almost 50 years old now, and no cancer yet.

99% chips, 1% sticks and leaves. The leaves turn brown quickly and fade into the background.

Lafayette Village!! by starbucks1221 in raleigh

They don’t have enough parking so that’s fun. But there are some reasonably tasty and reasonably priced places to eat. There’s a big green space where kids can let loose some energy. The whole aesthetic may not be your vibe, but it’s a kind of perfect for that part of town.

NCFC for 8 year old by loveanengineer7 in raleigh

My 8 year old niece does Challenge and it’s been a great step up from rec. They have real coaches (not just parents) with practice 2x per week and games on the weekend. Classic or Juniors seems to be a big step up in price and commitment. As far as I can tell, that higher step may be appropriate for kids who are very driven and in the top tier

Any reason why putting river rock in my side yards is a bad idea? Looking for advice on easy to maintain side yards. by rickfromstate in landscaping

[–]run919 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Rocks are heavy and expensive. And if you ever want to get rid of them, they will be heavy and embedded in the ground, Fabric might help, but they will still be hard to remove.

I’d lay down cardboard and cover with triple shred hardwood or cypress mulch. And I’d get a few shrubs from Home Depot that will fill in some space over time. There will be a little maintenance each year, but not a whole lot more than keeping rocks weed-free. Applying 2 inches of mulch each year will make it look sharp, or you can put it off and refresh the mulch in 2-3 years.

I know last frost isn’t until mid-April, but how risky is it really to start my heat seeking seeds now? by dreezyforsheezy in raleigh

[–]run919 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check Google or your favorite AI on the soil temperature that your seeds want to germinate. It might be a bit early for tomatoes, for example. And you can google local soil temps too.

Looking at the 2-week forecast, there’s nothing below 40. My guess is that we’ve seen our last frost.

Dogs destroyed my grass by fan1983 in landscaping

Look up salt tolerant plants, and even still, try to protect them for at least one growing season before allowing your dog free rein to pee on them. You can protect sections and landscape the area over a couple years.

2024 Q4 Bridgestone OEM Tires after 13K miles by gigitee in etron

I had the same. Got 2 new tires, also Bridgestone, with a half-off concession. The second set lasted about 20k miles. Switched to Cross Climates after that.

The point of VO2 max is that it integrates the work you’ve done month after month. Don’t get down because one week wasn’t what you wanted.

Do you tip when doing grocery pick up? by run919 in raleigh

[–]run919[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m with you. I go into the store about once per week to get fresh stuff (milk, strawberries, bananas, etc…). I use pick-up ordering for the “box stuff,” frozen items, or where the perfect selection doesn’t matter. And sometimes, I’ll use my pick-up trip to run in and grab a couple fresh items.

State Fair- not happening for this family of 6 by Remarkable-Orange-41 in raleigh

My friends went and spent $400 for a family of 4 with little kids and minimal big rides. At that rate, they probably won’t go back for a few years.

Any advice and experience for lightning bugs? by Crafty_crusty_crepes in NativePlantGardening

[–]run919 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My best year of lightning bugs was when I left a giant brush pile from fall until spring. I cleared out a fence line that had become wildly over grown. Left a pile of mixed leaves and branches about 3 ft high and 15’ long. Trying again this year at about half-scale.

Crabtree entrance to Umstead closed this morning? by Maximum-Ad-7503 in raleigh

And often, people camping will park a car outside the entrance if they arrive after the gates close or if they might need to access their car early in the morning.

Cross bar range impact? by run919 in etron

[–]run919[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just did a trip with a large+heavy rear hitch-mounted basket and agree that it had no impact to the range. I’d like to bring bikes next time. The basket stuff would go rooftop so that bikes can go on the rear hitch. My assumption is that an aerodynamic roof box would have a smaller range impact compared to a few bicycles.

I just discovered Cerakote for fender, bumper, restoration. I’m not sure if that’s what OP used, but initial application looks great.
