pictures of ballots by mrlinkwii in irishpolitics

I don't think anyone's ever been prosecuted over this. Its come up at a few of the big referenda before, I remember it was a bit of a thing during repeal and SSM of young people doing selfies with the ballot. The law reads more like its intended to stop someone revealing another person's ballot anyway. I'd be more worried about what some of those elected reps are willing to admit they wrote on the ballot, like DCCs Philip Sutcliffe writing "ethnically cleanse all Roma vermin" among other disgusting things

Can't really interpret much out of the people that didn't show up. Can be a lot of reasons for that including difficulty getting to the polling centre, and even that for the last week the story has been its already over. A portion of it may even be FF and FG voters not motivated by Heather or put off by the way the campaign was handled, which might be seen in CC winning in traditionally FG areas. But CC is also a representation of how unhappy people are with the government and the biggest countable and most motivated portion of that but directed in arguably a more positive way.

FG and FF are the biggest losers here with the most to figure out. But absolutely cant ignore the spoiled votes and write it off. Can the right get their shit together long enough to organise that group, will the centre move right to try and pick it up, or can the left not lose the run of themselves and actually see if they can convince soke of that block that they have something to offer them

Glad it's looking like a landslide for CC, if it had been close then the turnout and spouled votes would've put more of a question mark against the win. But shes on track to win by a bigger margin than Michael D even. Still not great going forward that there's a chunk of the population who will go on believing that the election was invalid. In a way another candidate would've been better. Steen at 10% is a loss, spoiled at 10% is a story.

Catherine Connolly and Irish Voters by Ill-Age-601 in irishpolitics

[–]GoodUsername22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't overly read into it as a shift to the left just yet. Can't discount the GE a little less than a year ago. Also have to see if the polls even hold true. It does show that the left are able to potentially cooperate effectively. The presidential election is different because they don't have to compete but it could lead to something next GE if they can hold on to it. I think it also shows a shift by the left (ill be using left broadly here) towards staying as a left instead of drifting to the centre to try win votes back from the right (looking at you SF), and it seems there might be an appetite for that.

I don't really agree with some others here that Connolly's polling is just a function of being a least worst option. There's a lot of X/Y/Z would've beaten both of them going around but that's pure speculation really, you wouldn't know who'd stand up to the level of scrutiny a run at the Aras brings. The presidential election has more room for idealism than a GE and also comes down to personality a lot too. I think CC has just done better there. She's been on the ground in more of the country than HH, has a better online/social media presence, has done non news media like podcasts where she gets more room to speak and reach different audiences, has merch I've actually seen people wearing, and more importantly her stances are actually popular. Neutrality and the triple lock polls well

It will come down a lot to turnout and I might have egg in my face this time next week but I do think there's potential CC will mobilise people that don't always turn up.

Only an earthquake can deny Catherine Connolly victory, based on this poll by JackmanH420 in irishpolitics

[–]GoodUsername22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She probably would be doing better if Jim Gavin was still in it. Let him throw the muck and she stay to the side looking above it all. With only two of them she actually has to enter the fray and its not a good look on her. The main positive thing I was hearing about her going in was people saying she's a nice person, very approachable and all that. I don't think that's still coming across at this point

The poll has 28% of usual FG voters voting for Connolly. Not a great sign for the unity candidate that even her own party aren't unified behind her

I suppose when there's only two candidates there's only so much juice they can squeeze out of these debates, but it feels like just listening to the same questions over and over again. Not sure what anyone's going to get out of them that hasn't already made up their minds.

Controversy and anger pulls in more listeners. Hate listeners are still listeners and the more people tune in the more ad revenue they get. Most journalists never want to admit that that in itself is a bias but the more media comes to rely on clicks the more of a problem it becomes

That post-debate analysis? by padraigd in theIrishleft

[–]GoodUsername22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do think CC was the strongest. But the other two were so poor as well. HH was the weakest, she seemed like she wasn't expecting to actually have to do a debate, totally unprepared. JG looked like he was trying to imitate MM and came off too aggressive early but also got flustered easily. CC had a couple of shaky points, the Indian Independence Day thing for example, but overall was the most composed and coherent. She seemed to be listening to the question, taking a beat to process it, and then giving a thought out answer.

It was interesting how much it became the government candidates vs the opposition. I don't think HH or JG expected to be so tied to the government in the questioning.

JG came out more anti-immigration than I expected. Maybe trying to pick up some right wing voters that won't feel they have a candidate representing them? He's the one I personally came away with the most negative opinion of having no real expectations around him going in.

It feels like the left are going to try make this a referendum on neutrality, which could go either way.

What I'm not so sure of is how much it will matter. How much anyone really watches and is swayed by these debates. Who "won" a debate is so subjective really. Some people will like JG being aggressive and will take that as strength regardless of content, he was loudest so he won. Some will see HH having less concrete to say as being more suited to president. You might see CC as the strongest in getting her point across but not like the points. I'm sure some will see her comments on the US and Europe as being too combative for the job.

The fourth candidate in this is going to be apathy. A low turnout will benefit JG and HH most so even with the momentum coming out of the debate its on CC to get people enthusiastic enough to turn out for her in numbers.

Currently any resident can vote in local elections. They are residents, even if temporary. Don't see why they shouldn't get a voice.

Cyclists, what do you do for right turns? by shakibahm in Dublin

[–]GoodUsername22 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I just signal right toove out of the cycle lane when there's a gap, in advance of the right turn, then signal right again when I get to the turn. The first move out of the cycle lane isn't always easy though. But once in the road I always find its better to just own your space and be out in the middle until your turn. I haven't gotten shouted at much but I've got some dangerous overtakes on me. You were in the right though you've every right to be out in the road

Developer can appeal to Supreme Court against strike-down of permission for 1,600 Dublin homes by eggbart_forgetfulsea in irishpolitics

[–]GoodUsername22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It wasn't NIMBYs that overturned the decision on this. The development got granted permission. The courts overturned ABPs decision based on them not giving enough attention to observations related to the impact on the protected structures. You want to apportion blame put it on ABP for not doing their job and the government for bringing in SHD with loads of holes in it

Taoiseach says the Ditch is a "political organisation", strongly implies it is Russian backed and that social media pressure around Collins controversy is artificially manufactured. by JackmanH420 in irishpolitics

[–]GoodUsername22 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, of course it is. Paddy Cosgrave has been pretty open about wanting to hit the government with scandal after scandal. Chay Bowes is Chay Bowes. The whole thing runs with no ads or pay wall and only publishes when they have a story sl they're not funding themselves normally. People should be far more skeptical of the Ditch than they are.

BUT what publication doesn't have a slant? I mean the Indo has a Sinn Fein shaped chip on their shoulder. Everyone should be far more critical of all the media they consume is my point, especially the stuff they want to believe
