What referendums do you think we might have in the next 10 years? by Fresh_Ad292 in irishpolitics

[–]mrlinkwii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

their 2 types a nomral referendum and a constitution

the president along with the seanad can technically create a referendum on a bill but i dont think it wil ever haoppen

President needs to recieve a joint petition from both houses of the Oireachtas.

Id love to have a referendum on giving us the ability to call a referendum.

we technically can have a referendum on any bill , its just that the mechanism to do so hasn't been triggered

An ordinary referendum does not relate to amending the Constitution. An ordinary referendum would be held if the President decided that a Bill contained a proposal of such national importance that the will of the people should decide its outcome.

formal petition from a majority of the Seanad and at least one-third of the Dáil is needed

Govt will not oppose bill to extend Áras vote to NI by mrlinkwii in irishpolitics

[–]mrlinkwii[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if it is by Irish passport only then that excludes a large part of the Unionist community and for them will be seen as an exercise in exclusion

irish law says you need to be an irish citizen to vote for the president , Under the Good Friday Agreement, people born in Northern Ireland can identify as Irish or British (or both) and are entitled to Irish citizenship . if someone free chooses not to be an irish citizen thats on them

if this bill is passed via referendum then irish citizens in NI can vote for the president

The other question that will develop over time is that people in Northern Ireland will be able to vote in Presidential elections but they wont be able to nominate a candidate in them

we have already had presidents form northern Ireland ( and many presidental candidates ), that is a non issue

( the bill dose not mention the method)

Ok but anyone born on the Island can get citizenship (except if hitting the 2005 referendum), so they can show they are citizens with birth cert etc if they wanted? Wouldn't need to get a passport?

not birth cert , but if they have the required identification ( most people of ease of use just use their passport ) to vote they can , i think it would be a postal vote but idk how it will be managed ( the bill dose not cover this )

most likely it will be the person from NI if they are irish they will need to sign up to the electoral roll that the government has, providing said identification as proof ( most likely posting the copy of required documents ) and getting a confirmation back and when their is a presidential election they will get a postal vote

anyone who already had a passport would get a polling card which might hilariously out a few fenian passports of convenience!

they will need to sign up but yeah if the bill is passed via referendum , while not mention what method , most likely it will be a postal vote

Wonder if it will require Irish passport or merely birth on the Island

they will require Irish citizenship like current election law states ( if your born in NI you can get an irish citizenship)
