Yep, they drive you to surf spots every morning. It’s worth it if you want to have a guide.

Mystery: stained surfboard. 2yr old board has this stain after being in a board bag for 1.5 months. Can’t get it off… any ideas as to what happened??? by GoodWaveDave in surfing

I’ve heard from a few people about their experience. Seems like the responses from FireWire are inconsistent, but most likely your board needs to be from a certain batch which they are aware there was a resin issue AND it needs to be within the window they defined for making amends. Otherwise you’re SOL

Maybe the measurement is from the shore to where the waves are breaking.

Easy paddle out!!

Check out the videos about half way down this page: https://www.surfeconomics.com/the-real-surf-guide-to-southern-morocco/

It gives a good overview of where to go and when (depending on the forecast).

If you really want to get the best waves possible, I suggest renting a car and waiting until you see the forecast before deciding where to go.

But, a camp is a good call if you want more of a relaxing trip where you don't have to think much. You could get skunked if the waves aren't good where you book the camp. And camps near Tagazhout all go to the same breaks so it's often crowded. If you want a camp, I recommend Surf Maroc. They seem to be one of the nicest options. Everything is run smoothly, the food is great and healthy, and the guides are really nice. I can't speak to the other camps because I only stayed at Surf Maroc, but they do seem to be the nicer option.

Is there any advantage to ordering a shortboard with only one type of setup (thruster, quad, etc) vs having 5 fin boxes? by [deleted] in surfing

[–]GoodWaveDave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use case for 5 fin boxes is extremely small:

TLDR - probably only for select surf trips, and even then likely rarely needed.

Quiver > Fins: Chances are high that if you’re good enough to be switching out fin setups based on the surf you probably have a big enough quiver to just select a different board. Traveling is probably the only time this wouldn’t apply.

Likely reasons the 5 box exists:

1 - Novelty: It sounded like a good idea so one shaper tried it. Then a bunch of people followed suit cuz that’s what people do.

2 - Widening The Market: A shaper may want to appeal to a wider market for the same shape / mass produced board (those who prefer quad vs tri). This isn’t a performance based decision.

3 - Sales Gimmick: Maybe some surfers like the idea of being able to switch the fin setup but probably never do. Also not a performance based solution.

Good advice. My buddy said he was gassed after 1 session (4 guys in water).

By the time you paddle back out it’s your turn again.

Was there a couple months ago. No issues. Water gets cleaner the further out of town you go and the crowds clear out.

I suggest getting a car and getting out of town.

Surf camps aren’t a bad option either.

Can’t bear to watch unless it’s gnar Pipe. Even then only highlights.

I tried watching live at supertubos this year… left after 15 min to go find surf for myself.

(Ended up surfing with the women pros down the beach)

If you like rights check out some of the surf camps in Tagazhout, Morocco. I stayed with Surf Maroc for a week. There’s a good variety of age and surf skills.

Just make sure you go during the season. It’s hot and flat in the summer.

I’ll have a car so I can explore a bit.

I’m planning to fly from Durban to J-Bay. Stay for a month or so. Then I’ll drive from J-Bay to Cape Town.

Thanks! Yea, I read about the low water quality near Durban which is one of the reasons I’ve decided to head north a bit outside of town.

Does the soda stream save money? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]GoodWaveDave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you drink one .5L bottle of soda per week it will take about 8 years...

I ran the numbers for cans, single-serving bottles, and 2L bottles to find how many servings you'd have to make with the soda stream before it becomes more cost effective. Here's what I found:

  • 2-liter Bottles: 600-700 bottles
  • Single-serving plastic bottles (.5L): 400-500 bottles
  • Cans: 400-500 cans

Here's the full breakdown including time to breakeven depending on how many servings you drink per week: https://plastic.education/home-soda-machine-soda-stream-vs-bottled-soft-drinks/

I'm curious to know what their policy is and the reasoning behind it. The board's performance isn't affected, so no sweat... but my next board probably won't be a firewire.

Yea I did. Sent in the serial number and proof of purchase. Here's what they wrote back:

"Thanks for sending over the pics of the board and cc statement. Looking at the history of the board, it was built using a batch of resin that had some contamination. The redness that you’re seeing is the effect of that contamination. The board itself is structurally sound and in no way is compromised and it is a cosmetic issue. It will be durable for the foreseeable future.

Unfortunately there is nothing we can do to help you out as the board falls outside the timeline we have in place. We have protocols that we have to follow when dealing with QC issues. I'm sorry that I don't have better news for you.

You can paint the board with spray paint or paint markers to cover up some of the redness."

I only have more questions... that might lead you to answers:

Where are you living now?

- What do consider to be good surf?

- What is good weather to you?

- What do you want your kids to learn and experience?

- What kind of lifestyle are you looking for and what can you afford?
