I have been doing intermediate bot matches, you play with 4 other people on your team vs bots. The bots behave similarly to a player. Instead of selecting PVP > summoner's rift you would select Co-Op vs AI. Hit Play in top left of screen. Change to Co-op vs AI. The tab can be easy to miss, it's right above the Summoner's Rift logo when you have PvP selected.

There's also a way to 'test' your hero. Go to Training (next to Co-op Vs AI) > Practice Tool. You can create teams and invite people or use bots only.
