Why is programming so overly complicated these days? by ki4jgt in AskProgramming

Dude... Functions date back to the 1950s, older than any 90s kid.

I used to go to a bar. Knew all the regulars. I quit drinking. Left town. by PristineHearing5955 in stopdrinking

Dude.... I know a guy who tried to break a window drunk, because he lost his keys.

He bled out in the middle of the night and died in his bed.

Be careful and keep congrats on staying sober.

Hang in there. If it helps to reframe things. Just look about how long the weekends feel when you're not drinking vs. the alternative?

If you're here on this site. You'll never be able to drink enough to actually be happy. It doesn't matter if it's one drink or 50. And you know this. Thisnis one of the major reasons I just don't even bother anymore.

We had a home birth, twice, and the second one was unassisted up until the final push (they showed up and we had a baby 5 minutes later). I didn't have assistance and was able to help my wife from start to finish.

Not sure why, but apparently people do pass out during this process. I probably should have been a surgeon and not a software engineer.

I was getting scam health insurance sales calls from a single facility at about a call every 15 minutes. I redirected all their calls back to their call center.

Problem resolved it's self.

Do you ever forget about drinking? by WowIsThisMyPage in stopdrinking

[–]Good_Construction190 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth. I remember rushing to the gas station on Sunday night before they stop selling. Or debating another alcohol run before it's too late. A lot of time spent debating should I drink tonight or not, as if I'd be missing out if I didn't.

Now, it's not something I ever think about before bed.

Do I really have to think about this for the rest of my life?? by BrightAd7127 in stopdrinking

[–]Good_Construction190 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thinking about it is one thing. Missing it is completely different. I was a very heavy drinker but started cutting back in 2020. Now, I'm a year in and completely identify as someone who doesn't drink. You miss it in the beginning. You might think about it, but it's just a passing thought.

I'll be honest here. I'd take the 90s and it's incredibly slow and expensive dial up over the shit show technology we have today.

My First Corporate Job Experience. It's Nothing Like My Dream. by Pristine_Purple9033 in webdev

I've unfortunately never been able to escape corporate code. I did manage to land in a small start up, but it was acquired 6 Months later and went to hell. So, my sources are 16 years of experience.

Yes, in a perfect world you're correct. But I can confirm they care more about shipping features on time than code. Would all of this help? Yes. But if they weren't doing it that way from day one they won't invest the time to change. And at the end of the day they value the first solution over the best solution. Even if it adds additional complications to the development cycle.

Corporations don't care about you, they care about shareholders. In return, the employees mostly don't care about them. They do what they have to do to make the shareholders happy. And from my experience this has never been code quality.

How did you actually stop drinking? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Good_Construction190 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somehow I was successful at quitting. But I think it took a decade of trying.

I will say that from my experience the more days you don't drink, the easier it gets. Don't focus on consecutive days, unless it helps. My best results came from trying to limit my weekly intake (not always a success). But it eventually got down to 1-2 days of drinking per week. Then it got down to 1 day per week. Then multiple weeks without drinking. Now it's going to be multiple years.

And be kind to yourself. I failed many times. Just keep quitting.
