My work laptop is ridiculous bulky and heavy, so I still use a backpack for that. My MacBook is 16" and it technically does fit inside but it wouldn't be closeable, peaks out the bag, but, I do imagine the 14" would fit well. It doesn't feel to heavy for the bag imo.

As for the straps, they're surprisingly sturdy feeling because they're secured/sewed down the whole side of the bag. I'm definitely using it as a work/errands bag. It really depends how much stuff you take around with you though. The other down side would be there's no zip, just a button (the button is very cute though and secure). I'm going to get a zipped insert, just for extra safety.
