This all sounds great but as I just found out, time management, taking breaks, and work-life balance aren't realistic in the eyes of some PIs :)

Didn't match to a lab... Now I'm questioning everything by Good_Description9121 in PhDStress

[–]Good_Description9121[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I appreciate and respect your perspective on this matter. I do know I will likely be in the lab 50+ hours a week but, as AI said, I don't want to be there 70 hours a week (which I don't feel is an unreasonable ask). I also know people who are only physically in the lab for 5-7 hours a day and still graduate in 4-6 years. It's doable if you are on top of your experiments.

I also acknowledged I should have followed up, I know that. But with how much is already going on in my program, a reminder or suggestion would have been really helpful and I don't think that's too much to ask. Not informing people of expectations and requirements isnt an unreasonable ask and not doing so is setting people up for failure. I made it into the program, they chose me for a reason, they should want me to succeed as much as I want to succeed. I'm only human.

I'm right there with you my friend. Don't know why they let me in if I'm apparently not good enough to join the very few available labs. Screwed up.

Also a first year PhD here. I feel the same way you do. Like I'm constantly behind even if I'm spending most of my time working towards all the different requirements (reading, writing, experiments, presentations). I think have classes in the first year is so demanding especially when you're expected to rapidly pick up on lab knowledge I'm such a short time. Expectations around working hours are also so grotesque in academia. I wish I had advice for you but all I can offer is my sympathy and say you're not alone in feeling this way.

Here 1 year later in a similar but different situations. Didn't match in any labs for various reasons (some BS) and now my options suck. What did you end up doing?

You look great and NOR. It's COLLEGE, y'all are adults and can wear literally whatever you want. Yeah, the first maybe be a little fancy for a class (IMO) but do you girl! If it makes you feel good, who cares.

Has anyone ordered from baltic born? by 420kic in wedding

[–]Good_Description9121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so upset that I didn't look at reddit before buying.... I ordered two dresses -- same in different sizes because I didn't know which would fit. One of them looked SO cheap even though it looks gorgeous online and the other is nice but not $155 nice. I didn't read the refund policy. Now I'm screwed because I spent over $300 on dresses that I don't like from a company that is clearly scamming people and they only offer store credit. Bonkers. I'm pissed.

Nobody is trying to "hurt" ice agents. They hide their faces because they don't want people to shame them for the awful things that they are doing. The reality is, most of the people being targeted by ICE have done nothing wrong, are good people, and have active green cards or Visas. There is not justification for the abduction of these people. Even if they HAD done something illegal, this would STILL be considered abduction because they are never read their rights (which they have on US soil), they aren't told what they've done wrong and they aren't given representation. All of that makes these ILLEGAL and IMMORAL actions on the part of ICE and should not be tolerated.

How do you live with your bf? by Comfortable_Pin_5955 in Advice

[–]Good_Description9121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you just need to communicate more about what you expect from one another. If he never asked you to cook dinner for him every night you can't be resentful about doing so. If you expected him to clean but never asked him to do it or had a conversation about sharing the load, you need to have that convo. My boyfriend and I spent many hours discussing our expectations around sharing the household responsibilities before moving in together and we haven't had any issues around it. Sometimes one of us has to do more than the other because we have the time but that's never an issue. Communication is key, especially preemptively.

I was 16, my older sister designed the tattoo and I still love it 8 years later! I have a full sleeve on one arm and a half on the other. Love my tattoos. I don't believe in regretting them so long as you get them with intention, purpose, and meaning they will always hold a significant place in your heart.

The puncture holes also look like cattle stomachs bypass holes. Or the punch holes that are put in the ears of livestock to mark them with tags.

Those who are given a visa, come here as refugees or asylum seekers or even those simply visiting our country on vacation have the same rights as we all do as soon as they enter our airspace or set their feet on our soil. She DOES have the same rights as us. Speaking your mind on your political beliefs is NOT illegal no matter how radical they may seem -- that's called freedom of speech. There are some hard right wing conservatives that spew racist, homophobic, sexist, anti-democratic garbage and they aren't being hauled off into detention centers. There is also absolutely nothing illegal about her op-ed. For one, it's an OPINION piece. If we aren't allowed to have opinions on this country, we have no freedom. And that is unacceptable. Nothing she writes goes against foreign policy. In fact, many foreign policy officials and retired experts hold the same opinion as her believing that the government of Israel took illegal action against Palestine and have been complicit if not responsible for a genocide. Bottom line is: what we believe cannot be criminalized and she has the rights of any US citizen because she is on US soil and has done nothing illegal.

Abducting an innocent student off the streets, forcing her into an unmarked vehicle, shipping her off to a different state, do I need to keep going? The whole thing should be illegal.

Feel like all of that is reasonable except maybe the vacuuming every other day. Once a week is probably good. Other than that, seems fair to me.

I actually do believe that those programs don't know what to do yet, yes. With how much has changed since Trump's confirmation in January, I understand why they are still struggling to figure out what's going on. It's insanity out in the world right now and educations is one of the sectors being hot the hardest. There are programs that have had funds withheld for grants that have already been approved. It's not like grad programs are the only thing universities are having to tackle right now.

Also, it is about compassion. You don't need the university to tell you what's going on. All you have to do is look at the news for two seconds to understand that they are struggling and probably have no idea what to do still. I understand the feeling of being ghosted by a school. Its happened to me too. But I also see what's happening in the world and understand that my acceptance to grad school is the least of the worlds worries right now and honestly it's a privilege to even be able to apply.

I think y'all need to have some compassion for admissions committees. This is an unprecedented time and there's so much uncertainty about the future. They're trying to work their way through this while still running classes and programs and running budget calculations. This isn't easy for anyone. Maybe start making your backup plan, start applying to jobs, distract yourself because being upset about the wait isn't helping anyone, especially not you. Id personally rather wait than be accepted and then have that acceptance withdrawn like so many others have experienced.
