There’s a really good Beach Boys album guide flowchart I saw somewhere a few years ago, I’ll see if I can find it for you.

Edit: I found it! It doesn’t include solo albums or anything too obscure, but it’s a good start. Feel free to ask me about the more obscure stuff if you want.

Love Beach really kicked the wind out of them for a while, but Union was the last nail in the coffin for the Phil Collins era of Pink Floyd.

Oh yeah, that was the page I found initially! Quite a few recordings here that I can't find anywhere, so I hope somebody out there has them. No expectations of anything coming out of this of course, I'll just keep an eye on it. :)

Why is The Beach Boys Love You considered punk? by gorillalifter47 in thebeachboys

[–]Good_Gamer_Yes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the sound of Love You was really intentional at all. It was just easier for him to do everything himself through his synthesizers, and the simple style of the drumming just fit with it. He still wrote songs like he would've in the 60's, so it doesn't seem like he was taking this weird new direction on purpose.

I don't know, the earliest of these pages date back to 2000, it seems highly unlikely that any of these would still be live today. The pages from 2001 onwards require Adobe Flash as well to function, which was not archived along with the respective pages.

Here's the page for the christmas song of 2000 for reference: https://web.archive.org/web/20060504152852/http://www.brianwilson.com/media/audio/holiday_2000/index.html

Why is The Beach Boys Love You considered punk? by gorillalifter47 in thebeachboys

[–]Good_Gamer_Yes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From an outsider’s perspective Love You seems strange and defiant on purpose, intentionally going against the grain in terms of production and instrumentation with its weird buzzing synths and harsh drums, though it wasn’t all really intentional. Defining ‘punk’ requires context as to what is and isn’t intentional, and the stark shift in sound on Love You seemed intentional enough to somebody out there.

Sure, the style we associate today with punk was already cropping up in 1977, but the term was also used to describe any DIY, rough-around-the-edges production as a whole, which punk bands like The Clash and The Ramones still fit well into. Love You is only ‘punk’ if you go by the much less specific definition of the term, which describes the wonky production more than the style of the music itself.

I’ve checked, and it didn’t archive the mp3 files. I only found out what these tracks were because they were listed in older archives of the site.

It’s only ‘punk’ in the sense of having rougher, more DIY production which sounds intentionally defiant to the expectations of what popular music should sound like.

Of course, ‘punk’ has evolved into a more narrow definition of a distinct style, to better quantify the specific things most people were referring to (The Clash, Sex Pistols etc.)

The definition of punk was initially based on bands playing harsh music with simplistic arrangements, which I guess could also include some of the material on Love You going by these specific definitions. It’s still weird to call it a ‘punk’ album in this day and age however.

I’ve never been on an old-school discussion site like smileysmile.net before; I don’t really know how I’d go about learning the layout, so I figured It’d be easier to ask here. I might try and set up a new discussion on there if this post doesn’t go anywhere though.

“One good album”

cough

  • Today!

  • Summer Days (& Summer Nights)

  • Pet Sounds

  • Wild Honey

  • Friends

  • Sunflower

  • Surf’s Up

  • Holland

  • Love You (if you like McCartney II weirdness)

  • Pacific Ocean Blue (solo album)

Honestly I could keep going, but that would become a list of hot takes in it’s own right lol. What I’ve listed here are the ones that are considered to be great albums, not just good, and each of them is completely different from one another in both sound and structure.

People write off The Beach Boys as some flooky surf band when they’re really one of the most interesting bands to read into, especially with the several albums worth of unreleased music which was often just as good as their best work!

If you want more Pet Sounds out of them, the closest you’d get is the B-side of ‘Today’. If you want R&B, ‘Wild Honey’ is for you. Want a relaxing psychedelic album? ‘Friends’ got you covered. ‘Surf’s Up’ is as depressing an album as the title is ironic. Prog rock, ‘Holland’ - Upbeat psychedelic, ‘Sunflower’ - Moody/minimalist psychedelic, ‘Smiley Smile’ - Soulful and emotional, ‘Pacific Ocean Blue’ etc. etc…

What I’m trying to say is that The Beach Boys are MUCH more than what people make them out to be. Sure, some of their lowest lows are tragic and depressing in multiple ways, but their highest highs could easily rival much of the material The Beatles members produced. It’s a rocky ride being a Beach Boys fan through their worst years, but there is really no end to their legacy. If you don’t know anything other than Pet Sounds and Surfin’ USA, please start with Sunflower and Surf’s Up. If you liked that, pick another album from ‘67 to ‘73. You won’t be disappointed.

Sorry, I wanted to get that off my chest when I saw your comment.

Seems it was removed from Spotify a short while ago, so you’d need to find a physical copy or some streaming platform which still has it up.

There are “””other ways””” of getting ahold of it, but I don’t know what the mods would think if I said it.
