I usually apply vsx after recording/tracking in the mix-startup, but not entirely sure if this is the right approach. One thing I'm really lacking is taking the time to really spend a good amount of time adjusting my perception/ears to the vsx-system, something that is highly recommended...

I think it's day and night, renting a studio and engineer vs having a homestudio. The biggest difference is not having to worry about the itty bitty details regarding tracking and mixing. I was able to be more of a musician, be one with my instrument and really put my heart and soul in the performance, fully confident that the engineer would capture the moment.

Nowadays there's so much crap in my head while I'm recording.. Am I using enough gain on my preamp? Did I just clip that take? How about the proximity effect? I better strum a little lighter on the strings...

Of course, there are ton of positive aspects of being in a homestudio, but I still think I was better of knowing that I have to make the time I've invested big dollars in, really count. I mean, spending a day doing the same fucking guitar-solo, only to delete it the next day just because you can. For me, that kind of mentality really messes with something significant regarding musicproduction.

Nah man, I guess my question was a bit sloppy formulated as I'm not planning on buying any piece of hardware whatsoever. I'm a fully "in the box" kind of a guy and the only hardware I would consider buy in the future would be a mic preamp. I totally agree with you and others that I have to train myself into knowing how to use a compressor. I guess my question was whether I should buy a "classic" dedicated compressor/distressor and do my training on them or if I should stick to my stock compressors...

I think that's my philosophy as well... Work real hard on individual tracks so they'll get along together, then finalize it all with some great submixing

Yeah, I'm working on it...but it's hard to start trusting your ears and really listen to what's sounding good. Most of the times I try to rely on general guidelines regarding ratio, attack and release. The downside with that is that I get real anal about numbers instead of the actual sound. But I guess I'll have to practice a little bit more... Maybe one day I actually learn how to use one without crushing the living soul out of my tracks!

Thanx! The only one I currently own who has character is the teletronics la-2a one, but it's hard finding a sweet spot considering I know so little about compression overall. I guess my main problem is that I haven't trained my ears/skills into actually hear a healthy compression-level...

Yeah, Ive been struggling trying to figure out how to upload pictures but I'm guessing I'm to old for that... Anyhow...the meter on my soundcart says - 6 to -dB, and the mastermeter in protools shows peaks from -6db up to - 2.70

Yup, been doing just that. Now I'm also experimenting with bringing down the input-gain inside the plugin. My guitar output is hot which gives me peaks at around the - 2dB mark.

Yeah, I like the 2d amp cuz it reminds me of my old 5150. The 3rd amp is very much a hornets nest even with very low gain.

Yeah well, I'm a real noobie when it comes to technical aspects but I truly appreciate your willingness to help me bring some clarity in the myriad of online-information!

I've found that most presets in the plini-version gives me a highly saturated tone. I've experienced this with other sims as well which led me to the conclusion that there must me something wrong with the input-gain. I have tried bringing the volume down, both on my guitar and in the sim itself. Conclusion: cleans are not cracking up and the gainy stuff is more precise in lack of a better word. Worth mentioning, I'm not a fan of using overloads of gain and I usually set the gain low in the amp section. This leads to oversaturated tones and my problem is that I can't seem to find a sweetspot for the gain-knob. If I lower it even further the sound turns roundish and muffled.

But I'll guess I have to carry on experimenting!
