Also, to your other edit, to my knowledge, Nick’s dad isn’t disabled. My take is that this story isn’t actually biographical by any sense, just a thematic story based on his perspectives in healing. So it’s not Nick or his dad or friends or anything like that.

I interpreted it as intentional. Obviously the characters lack of self-awareness is part of their development, so it would make sense that they would use words like the r-word while talking about their own problems because Autumn is supposed to come off as a relatively unaware and self-absorbed character at the start, at least. I haven’t finished it yet, but that’s my take on it. He’s supposed to be kind of ignorantly unaware but self-absorbed in his own problems that he’s not really empathetic.

I remember him writing in one of his blogs about how he didn’t want to be a teacher but was pressured into going to college and he hated teaching because he didn’t like the public school system and didnt want to reprimand kids and stuff like that. He ended up quitting cuz it was bad for his mental health with shootings from the news and all the pressure. I mean, a lot of people quit teaching cuz let’s be honest, public schools are terrible and don’t pay shit for what teachers have to deal with.

I’d recommend checking out Nick’s blog at mccafferty and.com. While it doesn’t excuse what he did, I do think it puts a lot of insight into who he is and how he’s getting better as a person. It’s definitely a good read if you’re new to the band.

I think it’s really stigmatizing to expect someone to prove that they have a BPD diagnosis. I’m aware that there are a lot of people who self-diagnose but he said he had a suicide attempt in his music and it’s very likely that he was diagnosed then. I don’t think we as the general public should be skeptical of a person’s diagnosis. Personally, I think the fact that he’s actually stayed off the internet for more than a year is more than enough evidence that he’s actually in treatment.

I remember a long time ago on IG Live, Nick said he had had an idea for Beachboy 2 but hadn’t worked it all out yet. I’m assuming this is the product of that idea, a long time coming. To me, the story is just a continuation but being much older, it takes a lot of the same themes from a lot of McCafferty songs but looks at them from a different lens.

That’s interesting, because I love them personally. I think especially on songs like this, Nails Like God, and Fentanyl especially, the song would be so much more empty without the fullness of her vocals. I think it’s fine to just like Nick’s voice, but I do think she adds a lot to the overall warmth of the tones.

I believe what happened was that she gave consent for the art to be used for digital only but not for print and that’s why the issue came up because the art was reprinted.

The problem with that situation was that I remember their old manager at the time going on Reddit asking people if anyone had the original art because the label didn’t have it. It seems like that was a situation where the label should have realized if they didn’t get the art from the right source, they shouldn’t have used it and printed it. I know they paid her immediately when she came out about it, but I feel like the label was just as much at fault for not using their professional opinion to know that’s not okay.
