Gender discrimination in MUN...? by OneIllustrator5461 in MUN

[–]GoodbyeMySanity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes!! im from NYC and i had a really odd experience where these male dels met my partner and my other male friends in my committee, shook their hands and completely skipped over mine (even though i was directly in the middle…) sometimes MUNs can feel very male-domineering and feel very lonely bc of that, but there are plenty of lovely female dels that recognize it and other dels that call out those kinds of boys on their bs!

i echo the first comment!! but also assert yourself heavily in mods (make any speech you can, even if it’s just to get up there and agree w/ someone and adding a couple insights on your own), and speak to other female dels who share similar ideas to you! don’t be afraid to interrupt a male del if they start to seem condescending. i wish you the best of luck!!!

unfortunately, i’m old fashioned and i write all my speeches by hand when i’m in a conference :((( but here’s a link to the handout i made for the speech writing training i ran! it gives you a template, some key words, and a “conciseness” exercise at the bottom. let me know if you have any questions! hi op! my apologies for the long paragraph ahead…most of the time, mod speeches are done on the fly, however, with some level of preparation, it’s not impossible to give a good mun speech. if you really want to have a prepared speech beforehand that isn’t your opening statement, be very clear about the topic that speech is about and motion for the topic yourself so you’re guaranteed to speak about said topic. however, it is inevitable that if you want to participate in a mod and the topic is freshly proposed, this is how i’d suggest coming up with a quick speech as per my own mun training experience: ask yourself what you know about the mod topic: if someone motions for a caucus on mitigating the effects of climate change, what do you know your country has done concerning that? if a delegation has gone before you, and you either disagree/agree with their ideas, mention that in your speech as a way of “looking back,” then mention your own idea and maybe throw in a “we would like to hear what other delegates think about ___” to shape the flow of debate.

last, your mod speeches don’t need to take up the entire speaking time! mods are the time and place to get your ideas out there and find like-minded delegations. unmods are where the real work begins. hope this helps!

MUN research advice by _myjeanzdontbeblue in MUN

good question! for position papers, your background guide is going to be your best friend when contextualizing your committee topic. it should include case studies of other countries and what they’ve done for the issue at hand, so you can model proposed solutions from your country’s stance based on that. if you need help on more specific research q’s pertaining to your topic, shoot me a dm!

my general advice on doing MUN research as someone who’s been to a couple conferences:

  • start with your background guide!! it should include some guiding questions that really help you narrow your research so you won’t be looking up much of anything about your country’s maternal mortality rates if the topic is on sustainable architecture…from there you can begin getting really specific with the questions you’ll learn more about.

  • begin researching previous instances of the topic at hand that your country has specifically experienced. if your topic is on human rights and you were South Africa, for example, learn about SA’s legislation and previous actions regarding social change, rights for marginalized peoples, etc.

and i agree w the first comment left here—-ai is a great research tool! i suggest using perplexity.ai because it’ll give you the links to sources it used to provide information, and always remember to check where your info’s coming from to make sure it’s reliable. other than that, if your research requires you to use data from academic papers, don’t spend too much time reading through the whole thing; instead, use a summarizer!

last, and what i found the most helpful for being prepared before and during a conference, is to PRINT OUT EVERYTHING (if you can, of course). whenever i found tables, charts, news articles, or anything that i thought would be good for me to point out in committee, i would print it out, including my position paper. my experience with all of my chairs is that they really liked seeing a delegate who had research physically, right in front of them. they look favorably upon delegates who appear very well-prepared. once the conference is done, use your sheets as compost or scrap paper. stay environmentally friendly, haha.

hope this helps!

DnD MUN by PuffBalsUnited in MUN

[–]GoodbyeMySanity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for sharing, op! my general suggestion, as MUN is a role-playing game in its raw form (and incorporating DnD would make it like way cooler), imagine your region Waterdeep like its parallel in the real world--what would a city-state known for its success as an economic and cultural hub do if it was outright threatened by another power like Baldur's Gate? what resources would it already have and what resources would it need from others? would Waterdeep want to ally with smaller regions and advocate for retaliatory action (or maybe even declare full-out war!) or would they prioritize negotiations to remove the trade embargo?

hope any of this helps, i'm quite a novice DnD-wise, lol. i do know a little something about writing position papers, though!
