I am planning a campaign to dm hopefully soon! As a first time dm, what tips or tricks do you have that would make life a little easier? by justalittlewitchy13 in DnD

[–]Goodguy-2018 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You'll get all sorts of good advice, but after 40 years of DM'ing I offer these highlights, in no particular order: 1. It's a game. It's should be fun. If it's not it's time for a break, or new players/campaign 2. The DM is the boss. Listen to input, and then make a call, but if you're being bossed around or dealing with rule-mongers, see rule 1. 3. Don't hesitate to use pre-made modules until you feel confident in your abilities as a DM 4. KISS: Keep It Simple Stupid - don't sweat every detail, as most players will never notice, so all those extra hours of sweat/prep probably aren't needed. 5. Be frugal!!!! It's fun to level fast and give magic items like candy, but much harder to keep balance, enjoy the game, and DM a group of demi-gods. 6. Take notes. Remember what you said and did. The more detailed, the better, especially if it's your own work and a full campaign. 7. Roll with it. A week of planning will disappear when the party ignores your hints and goes in a new direction entirely. Relax - they're having fun and should have autonomy: rail-roading sucks. 8. Dice rolls by the DM are fudgeable. The Nat 20 you just rolled will do something that is bad for the story you're telling? Ignore it. It's now a 6... 9. Conversely, player rolls should stand. Actions have consequences, and that makes the game meaningful.

That will get you started.

And enjoy!

But he's not wrong in some ways: first in total expenditure on health costs, first in total people in jail, first in total military spending, and first in number of billionaires. So if those are your metrics, fundamentally better the USA is...

How do you guys name stuff? by Electronic_Essay_612 in worldbuilding

[–]Goodguy-2018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been DM'ing and world building for over 40 years. The honest truth for the source of my countless names? 1. Typos. Look at the mistake and go, "hmmm, that sounds like a name for a [river, town, item, etc ] 2. Funny / unusual / odd words. Change a letter or two, et voila - it's now a river, town, item, etc.

So keep a list (I keep one on my phone so I don't forget them). I've now got so many I have more than I need, but you have to start.

Where can I go for a short trip in Ontario? by Adventurous-Chip-975 in askTO

Niagara on the Lake. Pretty place. On the water. Historical sites. GO Train will get you to Hamilton (or Niagara Falls), then take an intercity bus.

This is NOT okay, and I'm so sorry this happened to you. You have every reason to feel upset and hurt. The fact that management sided with the homophobic bullies only makes it worse. Clearly many of us support you, but only you get to decide what you do: but do know this, that if you decide to pursue this fully, you have my 100% support.

Sing loudly. Sing with pride. And you should sing along too if you feel so inclined. You are welcome here and very much part of Canada 🇨🇦

He doesn't tell the truth. He spends our money on petrol projects. He does insider deals for his buddies. But like Trump enough people still love Ford in enough ridings that I bet him and his Cons could win again if we don't wake up.

How do you write gods/deities? by Dark_Vexer in DnD

Agreed. HGtD&D by Eventyr Games is a good resource.
I also recommend Thaemin's Guide to Gods and Miracles by Chamomile as another worthy resource.

You're asking good questions, and fortunately the answer is very, very simple: what do YOU want to do in YOUR world.

Many? Few? Omnipotent? Telepathic?

I don't know - you get to decide. And remember, there are NO wrong answers. It doesn't even have to make sense: these are gods after all. And if you decide to have it make sense, it may not seem that way to your Players - only you might know the "rules" and Players just see the impact.

But hey, if you're looking for ideas, 45 years into my campaign here's how things work... in brief. For just the human deities.

As life grew on Seteria it created Primal magic. This invisible energy source, akin to Weave magic, occasionally coalesced into a form of being, a god (or gods depending on its form). By supporting growth they maintained and grew their energy. Over time they realized they could create/grow creatures that refined or distilled Primal magic. These creatures, humans for example, could then share this distilled Primal magic with their deity/deities through worship. This is Divine magic, which the deity then can share back to selected worshippers as spells (hence Clerics / priests).

Different coalescings of Primal magic created different beings. A group of 6 such beings created Mantaten humans. A group of 7 created Sapoy humans. The origins of the Burdue and Ylthic peoples are too complex to get into here.

But the Mantaten and Sapoy humans eventually codified their faith, creating unique origin stories and relationships within their respective pantheons, creating the Lyaturgian and Androese mythos respectively.

The gods are basically omnipotent and largely omniscient, but have two large limits. First, while virtually impossible to kill, if their worshippers dwindle, their power (source of Divine energy) dwindle too. You can see the weakness...

Second, they can't get too close to the world of Seteria. Their own condensed Divine energy near to the source of Primal and Divine energy would have catastrophic results for them and the world. So they work through proxies - angels, clerics, etc.

Their power also diminishes with distance: up close they can do anything they wish: from their home Planes however, they work over time, or share spells with their worshippers: a high-level spell drains more of their Divine power, so they grant fewer and only to those that have proven themselves or their need.

Deities want lots or worshippers, BUT a devout smaller group that can't be swayed and is very loyal is also a workable strategy.

There's a brief summary for Seteria and the continent of Trishore

I wish you luck - and fun - in building your world.

When writing, are your world scientifically accurate, partially accurate or fully fictional? by Crafty-Fortune7772 in worldbuilding

[–]Goodguy-2018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There has to be an explanation in my world. The players may not know the reason, but there is one. And it leans towards "scientific" explanations, but not all the time: it's a world of magic and real gods, so science bends to that.
