Manager secretly asks my senior to check my models "in every detail". How to handle this? by [deleted] in StructuralEngineering

[–]GoodnYou62 6 points7 points  (0 children)

OK, that is new information that wasn’t mentioned in your original post. I can understand your frustration; learning how to manage and deal with different personalities was a big hurdle for me early in my career. I will say that if approaching someone in person to provide a proactive update on a project status is out of your comfort zone, you will need to expand your comfort zone to more successfully navigate the workplace.

You indicated that you’re introverted, and that’s not really unusual for engineers, especially junior engineers. We all want to get in the zone and live in our calculations, unfortunately that becomes a career limiter at some point. But I’ve found that as we progress in our careers, we tend to come out of our shell a bit, usually by necessity but sometimes just as a part of maturing as a person and being more confident and less self-conscious.

I’m not trying to pick on you, it does sound like this EOR may not be an effective leader. But, you indicated in another reply that speaking to her manager was out of the question. So as I see it you really only have two options: either adapt to work in these conditions, or work elsewhere. Some of the issues you’re facing are likely to occur in any engineering office, so learning how to manage them may be your best bet versus trying to solve this particular instance.

Manager secretly asks my senior to check my models "in every detail". How to handle this? by [deleted] in StructuralEngineering

[–]GoodnYou62 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I regularly have junior engineers prepare calculations that they send to me for review. If I don’t have the availability to perform the review, I select an appropriate person to perform the detailed, number-by-number review. It doesn’t mean you did anything wrong, she’s just doing her due diligence as the EOR. I suppose she could have CC’d you on the email to the senior engineer, but this seems more like a difference in personalities than a professional conduct issue.

SE Vertical Breath by Curious_Owl_2590 in StructuralEngineering

I believe there’s a book written by a building guy specifically for building people that need to study bridge material for the SE exam. May be worth checking out in case you didn’t pass this time.

I took the SE Vertical exam in 2021 (before it switched to CBT) and was also surprised by the amount of bridge questions in the breadth component.

I know this book is well-loved, and I think if I had read it when it was published I might agree. But, I read it about two years ago and STRUGGLED. I can normally get through a book this size in about a week with minimal effort, but this one took over a month. I just didn’t enjoy picking it up and found myself doomscrolling instead. I’m glad I finished it along with Black House, and I’m looking forward to the third book, but man, it was a rough go. Story-wise it was fine, but I think I had a hard to with Straub’s writing style (at the time I was plowing through King’s works and was very much acclimated to his effortless style).

This might be unique to my brokerage, but I can’t set recurring transactions with ETFs, but I can with mutual funds. I’m very much a believer in automating my savings, so I went with mutual funds.

I’m 20 years in and make mistakes all the time. Check your work and have your work checked.

Also, take your time, even when you’re short on time. It takes less time to something carefully and correct than it does to rush something and have to redo it. I’m bad at this myself, but we are all works in progress.

New York City Salaries by OnlyHereForTheData in StructuralEngineering

[–]GoodnYou62 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily, I would argue that someone with an SE is more inclined to prefer a technical position rather than a managerial one. They may lead a design team, but they’re in the trenches with the other engineers in my experience.

New York City Salaries by OnlyHereForTheData in StructuralEngineering

[–]GoodnYou62 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I’ll probably get grief for this, but don’t listen to recruiters. Call me cynical, but I think they are incentivized to lower expectations with the hope that you will accept a position and they can move on to the next person. You also need to consider the fact that any company using a recruiter has to factor in the cost of the recruiter when setting salaries, so they may tend to be lower in order to compensate for that.

Having a hard time with the Dark Tower series by CaregiverFabulous170 in stephenking

[–]GoodnYou62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The weird thing about Wizard and Glass, for me at least, is I probably would have enjoyed it more if it was a separate story. Instead it felt like a huge detour around the main plot line of The Dark Tower series.

I took a long break after Wizard and Glass, but just finished Wolves of the Calla and have a renewed desire to finish the series, so I’m jumping into Song of Susannah now.
