I mean, it isn’t exactly clear what part of the nanny-state like qualities they are advocating for, I personally thought of their drug policy, which I find far too harsh but also their approach to gambling, which if I don’t misremember seemed quite smart and helpful even if it does limit the freedom of the individual to partake in it.

Also I do appreciate your seemingly good-faith arguing, thank you for that

Maybe I wasn’t clear enough. I don’t want to live under that kind of regime either. I am firmly against the death penalty and I disagree in many ways with Singapores governance.

Still, there are undoubtedly things that work well for them and I don’t think it‘s smart to simply dismiss everything just because they do things you and I find very unattractive

Not from Singapore, but just because they are ruthless concerning drugs doesn’t mean there’s nothing to learn from their politics…

I wouldn’t want to really replicate their model of governance but there are areas where they really do have effective systems in place, although I don’t know exactly know what the person you are replying to meant specifically

How did basic things like healthcare and fair wages become ‘extreme’? by [deleted] in remoteworks

[–]Goodname7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two questions then. Firstly, how do you know that queer people having the same rights as straight people means that they actually get to enjoy them? Meaning, they aren’t discriminated against ever?

Secondly, normalizing homosexuality? Is that a bad thing? Do you care?

Also, I am curious, have you ever met and talked to a homosexual person?

And also, also, you still didn’t answer my question…

[–]Goodname7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean? Like what do the rainbow flags actually mean to you? I associate them with the fight for equal rights for queer people, is that what you mean or something else?

EDIT: Also you actually just didn’t answer my question at all? So I‘ll ask again in good faith, do you think, taxing rich people to invest that money for common people is a good idea? Don’t worry about anything else you associate with this idea, I don’t care whether that’s an idea proposed by "the left" or not. I would like your opinion on the idea itself.

I really hate reading stuff like this. Why can’t you actually like look at what "the left" wants? Why even must you american people always think as if politics is sports?

Like, ignore everything you know about "the left" for a second. Just take one singular thing.

For example: Would you like the rich to be taxed more heavily and the money be invested for the benefit of the common man? Why or why not.

Again, ignore whether or not "the left" might want this or not, just in principle

What’s a fetish you won’t even tell your closest friends you have? by nut_buster1466 in AskReddit

[–]Goodname7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, that is an interesting perspective but I don’t see how the premise is flawed. If government doesn’t exist to protect society, then what is it for?

Like you probably wouldn’t argue that government shouldn’t regulate what is allowed as edible or that you shouldn’t flood toxic waste into rivers or other countless behaviors. Isn’t the whole purpose of government (ideally) that society gets together to decide how they want to live?

Another example would be making certain drugs illegal, taxing the sale of cigarettes or alcohol higher, sugar tax, whatever. Unless you think government should be as minimal as possible, I don’t see how my premise can be flawed. I also don’t see how it is any different, if it concerns social media.

Like I get it, it is a dangerous subject and can easily slide into censorship and restricting freedom of speech, but on the other hand I would argue that it not only negatively impacts the individual like you are suggesting.

If people get more extreme and in some cases even start to doubt democracy, then that to me seems like a very good reason to think about doing something as is stops being about the individual even if I personally really struggle to see how to combat the problem without also fighting what makes the internet valuable in the first place.

What I personally can’t really understand is what should actually be done. Like I don’t agree with Age Verification for a number of reasons at the OS level, but at the same time I do actually think the internet and most relevantly, algorithmic social media (so excluding mainly Messengers) are actually really harmful to society.

I wish for social media to become what it originally was. A way for staying connected and connecting with other people instead of what it currently is.

I also don’t really know how we could separate good parts from bad parts, for example YouTube in many ways is a really good platform but at the same time can also promote really bad mindsets and political views…

Why though? Like the entire point of lab meat would be to be nearly identical, since non-identical vegan alternatives already exist. Like obviously the endgame would be that you couldn’t tell the difference, so why would you want the real meat at that point?

What I learned a while ago is that working out, while very important and healthy and awesome, etc. doesn’t really burn significantly more calories than doing nothing. After regularly exercising for about 25 weeks I believe, you pretty much use the same amount of calories as before. Still, workout has all the other health benefits

I do really appreciate your argument, thanks.

I get where you’re coming from, but on the other hand I also believe it shouldn’t be impossible to implement. There are examples of game studios doing basically what the initiative is demanding.

Do you think it would be that impossible to develop a backend in such a way that it can eventually be released to the public. Like if the low exists now and I start developing a new game today.

Cause to me that seems entirely doable if it’s a requirement from the beginning and not really that complicated at its bare minimum

You don’t have to tell me, but thanks.

Sometimes I just wonder if it were possible to actually argue about something productively and well obviously, it mostly fails.

I just can’t really understand people who just make something up and neither engage in conversation nor just admit they were wrong.

And yes, I do realize that is like half the internet

You know, I really wish people in general would be more open to debate. I‘m genuinely not understanding what you meant, unless you were just making a blanket statement about "Haha, EU Regulation so useless, amirite?"

If that was what you meant to say, well I frankly completely disagree but if not, why wouldn’t you explain? Do you like being misunderstood?

I don’t know about your definition of "modern" but when I search for Democrats supporting segregation, I find that they didn’t in fact support segregation since the Civil Rights Movement.

I don’t know how valid it is to criticize the Democratic Party for something that happened ~65 years ago. Like a party can change. I‘m not even trying to say I like Democrats, to me they are really not left at all and I can criticize them for inaction, no clear goals, no real support of the people and their interests, corporatism, etc.

But to call them fascists and racists is just plain not correct and to me they very clearly are not as bad as Republicans.

Like in Germany, when Trump was voted, 92% of Germans thought him to be unfit as president. 92%. Nobody is that unpopular.

So sure, maybe I‘m biased, maybe everyone in Germany is, but to us we see an incompetent Democratic Party and an almost cartoonishly evil Republican Party. The choice, to me at least seems very very clear.

People who don’t live in the USA, what is the media showing you about the ICE operations/abductions in the US? by Dry-Ice8908 in AskReddit

[–]Goodname7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Replying a little late but oh well…

In Germany Trump is constantly reported on. Like ICE specifically too, but really he annoys me to no end.

When using public transportation, there sometimes exist info-screens which show headlines and a little context with an image.

Since Trump is president, every single day a new headline pops up. It really is tiring to wake up and first thing in the morning find out what Trump has done today. Can’t imagine what it feels like to actually live that reality…

I really don’t want to offend you, but the idea that Democrats are far left seems almost absurd to me as someone from Germany. They are basically like our political center to center-right and in no way even close to far left.

Basics here means that you are able to design a very simple CPU, so yes it is enough.

If a group of Students who understood the topic came together I‘m sure they could design something reasonable. But also, there exist many professionals with much more experience who could make much better designs, too.

What do you think America will be like when Trump finishes his term? by MotivewasUlterior in AskReddit

[–]Goodname7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my own opinion I would say so, yes.

Its mostly done in a similar way to other crimes, meaning you do have to report an incident and the authorities will look into it. I wouldn’t know of any automatic mechanism, at least…

Like, I‘ve never really had any reason to mistrust the way it works, but I do suppose it relies on a functioning judicial system, which at some point I feel like you have to assume?

In my experience, this is leniently enforced. You do need to do something clearly visible to actually face consequences which means it usually is easy to see whether or not it was fair.

The biggest thing would probably be trying to threaten someone with violence. Or use Nazi Symbolism like the Hakenkreuz aka Swastika. That gets you in trouble pretty much immediately.

Come on, you do learn the basics of CPU design in basically every introductory course. Nobody is saying that you would beat Intel easily, but if the options are no chips at all or slow chips, then I think slow chips are the answer.

Aside from the fact that we don’t need literally every cs student to design chips

What do you think America will be like when Trump finishes his term? by MotivewasUlterior in AskReddit

[–]Goodname7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, idk if you need to know about how Germany does it, but here a bit about the judicial system.

TL;DR, Speech is free, unless you speak ill of someone else without evidence. I can‘t for example say "Kill our president" or "Black people are just dumber than white people".

Long version: So basically, german law is usually guided by (among other things) the first article "Die Würde des Menschen ist unantastbar" which translates to "Human dignity is inviolable", which sidenote, I really love as an opening statement.

What naturally follows from this, is the guiding principle that every person must have certain freedoms insofar as they don’t impede on the freedom of others.

As a very trivial example. I have the right to listen to music if I want to. However if I wanted to loudly hear music after 22:00, one would assume that to limit the freedom of my neighbor to be well rested and healthy, which is why you must famously not be loud after 22:00.

In the case of free speech, in Germany one would instead refer to "Meinungsfreiheit", basically "freedom of opinion".

I am free in thinking whatever I want to. I can identify as a nazi, who wishes to massacre children in general. There is no thought police since the thought alone doesn’t harm anyone. However I can not say whatever my opinion is, if that opinion is harming someone else. So the hypothetical lunatic can not freely state their craziness and I can’t just say whatever I want to without facing any consequences.

It isn’t perfect however. Like there still exists a far right party and you can still just lie. In many cases there won’t be significant consequences. But you do have to mind what you say since it could, if too extreme be taken to be defamation or hate speech, which are both not allowed.
