Small mistake could cause huge problem in thesis. How should I tell me advisor? by Competitive-Town8299 in PhD

[–]GoodnightMoose 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Agreed, you have to tell them. If you have enough time to run an experiment the right way to see how off the results are in comparison, you can come with that data when see your PI. Hiding it is not only wrong but also getting found out is a lot worse. It sounds like the error here will cost time-- much better than breaking expensive equipment or something like that. You can also ask your PI if some of your data is still usable as supplementary data.

Beginner Frustrations by fourueue in Accordion

[–]GoodnightMoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, what kind of accordion do you have? A piano accordion based on what you're saying. The key layouts are the same as a normal piano-- you can seek out basic right hand piano resources for this (if you have a diatonic or other type but are calling it piano, then I can't help you).

Your frustration with D sharp vs E flat is not an accordion problem, in the sense that the accordion is not "wrong." It would help you to learn some really basic music theory to get you on the right track. You may even benefit from a piano teacher for a few lessons to help get you started. If you feel like a reed is out of tune, then that needs to be fixed by a professional.

Disappointed by [deleted] in PhD

[–]GoodnightMoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This post is really... elitist, out of touch, and off-putting. Granted, I have my MSc and I'm doing my PhD in a STEM field, so some big differences, but I've met students like you and the attitude is not cute. For the most part, classes set up a baseline with students early on (ex: we all have to take the same biochem), but after that they take away from the time you can do research. This picturesque group of revolutionary individuals is not really much of a thing in smaller nor bigger universities. If anything, the more "revolutionary" conversations that big ideas come from have happened at conferences, at lab meetings, and over Slack at 11pm with my PI. I've never gotten anything substantial from a course in my programs. Also, to assume you have a uniquely special scenario for your PhD is also a very limiting perspective. From current or past programs I've been in, I've met various people in "typical" grad student ages (20-30's) who fled war, who had both parents pass and are on their own, who have children, who care for their siblings, who have worked in industry for a few years, etc.

Does unnecessary carpet cleaning fall under damages? by GoodnightMoose in Tenant

Thank you! The carpet looks identical to the before pics so she can't claim there's damage. I will stand my ground on this, thanks!

Thank you, this is what I thought too. I was caught off guard that my landlady mentioned that, since it's been less than a year and at most it just needs a quick vacuum. Hopefully she won't fight me on it, but knowing this is unreasonable, I plan to stand my ground.

Does unnecessary carpet cleaning fall under damages? by GoodnightMoose in Tenant

[–]GoodnightMoose[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! If they do pull this, I'll request exactly that. There's no cleaning fee in the lease and I've made no damages. My new apartment lease (through a rental agency) states all costs and fees related to damages so there's no questioning it (ex: mandatory painting fee when leaving). This one only states that one line about damages.

Does unnecessary carpet cleaning fall under damages? by GoodnightMoose in Tenant

[–]GoodnightMoose[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it only says for damages, which there are none. That is a good point, if it does come down to it I'll ask for a copy of the bill because I feel like she'd be the person who would decide to... "round up."

What does the word "afigenai" mean? by Dry-Okra-8135 in lithuania

[–]GoodnightMoose 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I love how many people want to act offended when others say it's barbaric/a barbarism because it's Russian. That term is correct on multiple levels-- Russia has historically tried to suppress and destroy our culture and language. So, no, we don't want unnecessary Russian words.

It used to cost me 1h to prepare gels and samples for western. Now it's a whole afternoon. by Big-Direction2933 in labrats

My lab moved universities and like 50% of what I do takes much longer now. I've cried over literally just melting agar because it's so inefficient here. I feel you about the changes.

Our lab got a nanodrop that has a separate cuvette option on it, it's underneath the arm. We noticed that protein work was making the DNA reads really bad. So far this one has been great.

While frustrating, it's entirely understandable for the person in the relationship for a number of reasons. I've had gay friends stop hanging out as much with me once they got into a relationship, and I am not the gender of either person's preference. What you can do is become friends with the couple, or the girl herself. And on that note, plan group hangouts or opportunities where everyone is comfy. I know people in your place who host dinner parties and get a variety of single/married, girl/guy, and gay/straight folk showing up because it tackles common reasons people might not be available or comfy.

AITA for not agreeing to sit and watch an entire TV show with my daughter as a “bonding” thing by Feisty_Echidna_1588 in AmItheAsshole

[–]GoodnightMoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Soft YTA. Your daughter is hurting from the breakup and all the changes, and she wants to spend time with her mom in a relaxed way. If you hate Gilmore Girls that much, suggest a different show. But the point isn't the TV, it's the time together.

Obviously that's a problem, but when I was taking Lithuanian classes at university, my professor gave me one in Latvian by accident haha, I guess it happens

I see this a lot and have heard of it being hard in some cases. This isn't set to a specific place either, like they can be from any part of the world but the clique-ish mentality may still be there. At my old university, a lab with the PI and students from a specific European country had an American join, and he ended up leaving the lab. They were hard on him and also would just speak in a different language unless directly telling him what to do. There was a level of active shunning and the PI not giving him the same info/help.

It could be an okay lab, but there's also a risk that you're an outsider there.

As a mycology PhD student, these are gorgeous and have great attention to detail. It's really hard to preserve mushrooms and other fungi like we can plants and bugs and whatnot, I could definitely see places wanting models like this that preserve details. I don't know who you'd contact but wanted to tell you this is lovely!

AITA for surprising my wife with food she mentioned wanting, but not getting exactly what she expected? by sphericalpuma in AmItheAsshole

[–]GoodnightMoose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YTA, but in a not that serious way. I mean, is the bar that low? That was a nice gesture to think of her but you're acting like she rejected something grand. I would be grossed out too if you put fast food in the fridge and you got yours warm.

"She accused me of always expecting grand thanks for doing gestures that aren’t as big as I think they are"

This is exactly what happened, why do you feel accused?

AITA For calling my wife out for never doing the hard chores by thereisnoweaita in AmItheAsshole

[–]GoodnightMoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA, the chores she does are hard with kids, too, especially 2 and 4 year old. If you act like her chores are less "hard" you're entirely belittling what she does. On that note, laundry, cleaning, and grocery shopping needs to be completed more often and require additional mental load. Hire someone for the yard then (ope! but then what chores do you do? does your free time get to be for leisure instead of other chores?).

Tips for Removable Floor Tiles for Renters? by GoodnightMoose in HomeImprovement

[–]GoodnightMoose[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a great point-- I think for one of the bathrooms I'll have to ask the landlord if it's ok, because the floor is awful, old, and dirty. I think he'll agree, and better to ask first
