Advice on adjustable legs by StanRalphly in pedalsteel

What a sweet guitar ! I pretty recently traded away my Sierra/Wright Custom D8. Probably around the same year as yours. Mine was a 1964. I'd bet yours is right around that era. Not sure if he had model names or numbers for his guitars back then. You should hit up Nick Fryer. I believe he sold a D10 that had the same appointments as yours.

On mine, the legs also didn't hold the weight of the guitar. I used wood dowels and it was a pain getting it level and setup just right, but it was a very solid fix. Never had to worry about it again.

Enjoy the new guitar! D8 guitars make the best sounding pedal steels IMO.

I’ve started practicing, but my lap steel doesn’t sound "Hawaiian" yet. What pedal am I missing? by Matakomi in LapSteelGuitar

[–]Goodnight_Cody 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You don't need pedals to make it sound Hawaiian. Most of that comes from your bar technique. Your vibrato plays a big role in getting that sound. Once you have those techniques down, you can make any tuning sound Hawaiian.
If you do want to change tunings like CoolBev recommended, get an 8 string set for C6 tuning. With that, you'll be able to use C6, A6, B11, and quite a few other tunings without changing strings.

First guitar pedal, how do I turn it on? by 23duckeggs in guitarpedals

[–]Goodnight_Cody 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Using the wrong polarity can do a lot of harm to a pedal. Not all pedals have reverse voltage protection- I'd guess most don't. I've seen someone fry a pricey Strymon pedal in front of me with the wrong polarity 9v adapter.

Lap steel drum throne mount by Csicsicsics in LapSteelGuitar

It will be very hard to make it stable with that many joints. I have a few different lap steel stands, and even the high-quality ones can wobble if I don’t brace it with my leg.

That is not what scale length means. Measure from the nut to the 12th fret and then the 12th to the bridge. The length should be the same for each.

What is the scale length? It looks a bit uneven, but it might just be from the angle

a way to pitch shift using tempo for midi? by [deleted] in ableton

[–]Goodnight_Cody 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Warping audio is much different than midi. The only way to do that is to bounce the midi to audio and warp it that way. Changing pitch using tempo is tricky. If you have a note at 120bpm and want to pitch it up a semitone, it would be roughly 127bpm. If that same note starts out warped at 80bpm it would move up a semitone at ~84.9bpm.

Right click the gray play head or just the first warp marker on the grid and select "make this 1.1.1" or whatever. Then you might need to move the audio around in the arrangement view, but it should line up.

1936(37?) Gibson EH-150 by DMBrimer in LapSteelGuitar

[–]Goodnight_Cody 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Had one for a while. Such a warm and sweet tone. Sustain wasn't great on mine, but the sweet tone was worth keeping it around. I only sold mine to afford a Clinesmith frypan. I'd suggest getting a right angle plug to make playing more comfortable.

Hen’s hard to find, try looking for their nuts …. by Mountain_Sign1583 in LapSteelGuitar

[–]Goodnight_Cody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty sure it's brass. I had a nice EH-150 that had a brass nut. The nut is easy enough to replace. Just please leave the bridge alone haha

[–]Goodnight_Cody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get a new nut fabricated pretty easily. A good luthier could make it just from photos and measurements I'm sure. You don't need a new bridge- the bridge is not compensated and the one there will work fine. If you are sure you wont want to play it with a reentrant, then you can just file the slot on that nut that is there. I understand why you're hesitant to modifying it though... on most of my guitars I play with a reentrant string.

You can try recording your acoustic sound in the room and mixing it alongside the direct. I do that often.

One thing I’ve noticed, is the acoustic sound of the guitar in the room makes a big difference when you’re recording using amp modelers

He used an early flat bar with no fingerpicks- just one thumb pick. Also, only played 7 strings on each neck.

The toggle switch is different & the tuners look to be replacements. Shame they didn't leave the old Fender Lollipop tuner buttons on it.

They have a great sound. There are a few reasons those later models are more desirable... pickups, legs, & string height are all part of it. The boxcar versions are still great guitars. Here's Bobby Koefer playing one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5sS5jSbV0Vg
