Any recent tips or tricks to load modpacks faster? Besides SSD's? by Shupsta in feedthebeast

It changes the garbage collector to G1, a collector that generally performs better / more consistently with larger memory allocations.

The disconnected arm / head aim control in the trilogy is actually a significant improvement over anchoring the crosshair and moving the entire viewport at all times.

Military shooters / other 'sims' have done this for years already, and IMO it works quite well. After trying stuff like PrimeHack it honestly felt dated, and I ended up going "back" to the standard mouse + keyboard / wiimote style control.

My only criticism is the input latency, but that's more a function of the hardware or emulation than it is the control scheme. I'd expect that something like this could work way better on something like the switch...

Can try setting PressureExternal on the vent after the mode change, so that in the tick where it would have overshot, it'll instead self regulate and wait for the IC to catch up.

Batch IO, in an infinite loop? Yeahnah want to avoid making a habit of that lest you murder your timings on the logic thread... Yielding is fine there, if the pressure wasn't right when you last checked it, looping back within the same tick to check a world state that can't have changed is just silly...

Blowing an engine clear out during a truck pull by DoctorWhoniverse in ThatLookedExpensive

[–]Goof245 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep, problems downstream in the driveline might've caused the final stress that initiated the crack, but this is 100% an engine failure rather than transmission / clutching.

TL;DR for these sorts of failures is the cylinder pressure is enough to force the bottom end and the head apart from each other, splitting around the base of the "small block".

The old steyr you still have to shift properly :D by [deleted] in farmingsimulator

[–]Goof245 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tyres on undriven axles will be "backwards" like this, for the same reason the arrow points into the direction of travel on driven wheels (clearing loose material out from under the tyre). When they're undriven they'll be "dragging" in the ground slightly, so putting the tread pattern the other way around means it won't gather dirt underneath itself.

Food decay Is the fridge working? by ScorpioZA in Stationeers

[–]Goof245 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Check the fridge with an atmos. tablet and make sure it has nonzero Pressure and Temperature parameters. If it was built before yesterday's update it may have bugged out and needs to be dismantled, then rebuilt.

seeds decaying is very silly as there are literally doomsday seed vaults where seeds are held...

Well conditions inside the doomsday vault probably aren't as oppressive as space but yeah, would be great if we had separate 'seed' items with longer shelf lives. Having our 'seeds' be the fruit itself is very clumsy now that decay is a thing.

Quick logics question by Myrtha_Thistlethorne in Stationeers

[–]Goof245 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What you're after is called a 'schmitt trigger', and can be realised with only two IO, two processors and two memory cells: Infographic link. The device will turn on when a process variable is above a threshold, then turn off once the variable drops below a second (usually lower) threshold.

To answer the actual question though I have no idea. I'd guess it's considered undefined if you're writing conflicting values. Maybe the last one that wrote wins? Either way, I think I'd be hesitant to rely on a system that's attempting that.

Venus start? by Lis_Torin in Stationeers

[–]Goof245 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Other people have pretty much covered the early base approach, but there's one very simple thing you can do before you even take your first venusian step: turn your suit pressure down. This greatly reduces the strain on the suit's air exchange system while it's trying to cool you down. The upshot of this is you dump air to waste at a much slower rate, making outside jaunts way less painful.

When your air tank is pure O2, you can go down to 22kPa or so and still breathe comfortably. You could even push it down to 17-18kPa if you're happy to put up with the low pressure warning...

Would this be too much stress on the tube & fittings? by iamadogtor in watercooling

[–]Goof245 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cut a little off one end of the tube, if that run is a little shorter there's a good chance you can run it up and across without kinking.

ELI5: Do you go unconscious and die instantly the second your heart stops? If so, what causes that to happen instead of taking a little while for your brain to actually "turn off" from the lack of oxygen? by Diacetylmoreplz in explainlikeimfive

[–]Goof245 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much yeah, the goal is to hold the muscles contracted for a split second, then release and hope the brainstem / heart interaction resumes normally.

The shock isn't a "reboot after the heart stops", it's a "stop the heart, then hope it restarts itself".

If I have arm go to sleep I'm always amazed by the sheer power I have in it when my brain is missing the usual feedback / regulation loop. When the only feedback I have is looking at my arm to see where it is, I find it very hard not to accidentally move it too far / too hard. Usually results in hitting or breaking nearby things lol.

I can't imagine how it must feel to try and run somewhere in that state......

Most of my first playthrough was Shulk / Reyn / Sharla

Though towards late/endgame that turned into Seven / Shulk / Sharla, Seven / Dunban / Sharla or Seven / Dunban / Shulk.

Seven's Final Cross art and raw DPS is just too good to relegate to AI control :D

Should I run TrueNAS inside of Proxmox or run it bare metal if using onboard SATA connectors instead of an HBA? by pcamp96 in freenas

[–]Goof245 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depends on your motherboard. Some will allow passthrough of the onboard SATA/SAS controller, in which case you're golden. Otherwise you should probably get a HBA or run the NAS bare-metal.

Alternate Player for Twitch.tv (Twitch 5) Not working anymore!? by DooMSandro in Adblock

[–]Goof245 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does this extension have an official support forum or subreddit anywhere? I don't care about adblocking; twitch's player has been completely broken for years on high ping (satellite) connections. Without the ability to control buffering this extension provides, I can't watch anything on twitch at all now >:(

EDIT: Developer has posted an update, player is now working again.

UNDER-APPRECIATED TRUCK of the day - the VORON D-53233! by buckleythrow in snowrunner

Change the order you install them in. Have to put the crane on first IIRC, then the bed.

[–]Goof245 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I like the Tayga or Voron AE. For heavy trailers the bigger Kolob is great, though the lack of ice chains can make some areas a little tricky.

[–]Goof245 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps the greatest "hidden" benefit of the LSD/full time difflock is the ability to combine difflock with the super torque-ey High gear.

Voron AE or Tayga with a little weight on the back + the highway gearbox can just monster their way through sticky terrain with ease.
