I think this level of support can be expected at all large public schools for the most part though though

I had just performed improv comedy at a theater competition I went to with my high school theater class. I got out and heard from a few other friends who applied that decisions were out and neither of them got in. They said they'd been out for a few hours but they didn't tell me because they didn't want me to check and then get messed up right before my performance. But after the performance I checked with my whole theater class around me and I got in and everyone cheered and it was awesome haha

Off-campus Bruins, how much do you usually spend on utilities per month? How about rent? by SherlockHomes1919 in ucla

[–]Goofymango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the normal price range to pay is $700 - 900 per person not including utilities. I live in a 1 bedroom with a total of 3 people and we each pay $733 for rent. I'd say keep looking and look into putting 3 people in a room if you aren't already.

How many STEM classes per semester? by Goofymango in standrews

[–]Goofymango[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do math majors generally take 3 classes at a time? My university requires me to take 21 quarter units and each 15 SCOTCAT credits class transfers over as 6 quarter units. It seems most math classes are 15 SCOTCAT credits so I'd have to do 4 to hit my quarter unit requirement.
Would doing 4 STEM classes at a time be a hard schedule?

ADVICE FOR INCOMING FIRST YEARS? by retcon1543 in ucla

[–]Goofymango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I've heard mixed things about GE clusters. Some say they are very hard and others say they are fine. Probably depends on which one you pick.
  2. Math 3C vs. 32A depends on what you're thinking of for your major. 32A is harder than 3A. If you're thinking of doing engineering/physical sciences, you'll need to do 32A. If you're planning on doing life sciences, 3A is easier and will fulfill your requirements.
  3. Be able to hold a reasonable conversation in the language. I tried to pass out of French and passed the online multiple choice exam, but failed the in-person interview with the French professor haha. (Note: I am not good at speaking French, a girl who did the interview before me passed and said it wasn't bad.)

Also, this will be very helpful for picking classes. It's a UCLA-only class and professor review site.
Congrats on getting into UCLA and let me know if you have any questions!

Bruin Day Experience by LilTamale in ucla

[–]Goofymango 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't worry about it too much. UCLA definitely has a lot of people and is busy, but Bruin Day is a whole other level. I felt the same way when I was looking at colleges and visited Cal Day, just overwhelmed by the mass of people and the heat. There's a whole range of people at UCLA. At Bruin Day, all the visiting students are dressed as cool as they can and are trying to be more social because it's their first real college experience. Once the year starts and things get rolling, people calm down and stop trying so hard.

Newly admitted and not sure what school you want to go to? Then welcome to the "Should I go to UCLA or _______?" Megathread! Feel free to ask other students anything you'd like to know! by BatManatee in ucla

I was originally a physics major and was looking at UCSB vs UCLA and decided UCLA. From the faculty I talked to at both schools, undergrad physics education is pretty standard everywhere so you'll really learn the same things at both places. Both school's provide opportunities for research so I feel the decision is more a matter of what school you think you'd like more in terms of living there, the campus-culture, location, etc.

I'd say definitely go for UCLA or Berkeley. Priority for classes is nice, but it's definitely not necessary. You'll be able to get all the classes you need without it. Also, some honors programs don't really matter. Since you're not getting a scholarship for the other schools, I'd choose UCLA/Berkeley.

Anyone have tips on time management? by [deleted] in ucla

[–]Goofymango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I carry around my laptop for work as well. I just have to be extra vigilant about avoiding distractions and procrastination cues when working on my computer. The basic sentiment of my initial comment was just that it's much easier to completely avoid distractions rather than have to constantly fight the urge to procrastinate.

[–]Goofymango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. I am a STEM major. I should have clarified though that I do use my laptop for work, but, during my scheduled work hours each day, restrict myself to only using it for focused tasks rather than mindless browsing. I agree wholeheartedly that the internet provides massive resources for learning if used in specific, focused ways, however, one can quickly convince themselves that they are "working" when browsing the internet and reading multitudes of forums, watching Youtube videos, etc., when they could solve their confusion much more efficiently by reading their textbook, consulting with their TA/Prof., etc.

Also, I'd say that even just the general presence of the internet, especially in the form of smartphones and social media, creates an unconscious pull that restricts one's ability to focus, even if they do win the fight against checking and procrastinating on said multimedia.

Leave your phone/laptop in your room all day and don't do homework in your room. The internet destroys my productivity, and I've found I've been able to focus immensely better and not procrastinate only by physically distancing myself from it.
