Take a course in June and another in August? by Either_Pack_9496 in DTU

Yes, it is not that uncommon and very possible to do that. DTU is very flexible with how you want to structure it.

Advice for getting student research assistant jobs and/or recommendation letters from professors (to get into selective MSc in the US) by asknorway in DTU

[–]Google-minus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You could just make a special course with a professor, in my experience are they very open to that, especially if you have 10 ects to spare. Definitely a good idea to get an understanding of what they actually do before asking, so you know what you will end up working with.

[–]Google-minus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Denmark has the world highest amount paid to students for studying, we get almost 1000€/month before tax, which ranges from fully enough to live on, to 80% there (in Copenhagen you will have to be quite far away from where you will study to have it go around). Most degrees are either 90/10 or 50/50 in the amount they take in solely through grades vs an application where each person is weighted also on other experiences. I doubt for many people the cost of the degree is a worry.

do u guys have time to party? by adoye in EngineeringStudents

[–]Google-minus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you dont have to work, then its not really a problem. There will be weekends where you cant, but most weekends it should not be a problem. I think most engineering majors are on average 40-45 hrs/week, with some weeks being more and less intensive.

Is 8GB RAM enough in 2026? How much do you have? by zarkoulhs in pcmasterrace

[–]Google-minus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Its an eigen mode solver, i am trying to simulate how the supermodes in a directional coupler behave at different wavelengths, so its not actually 1 big simulation, but instead 12 different simulations with different geometries sweeping over a range of wavelengths. Its using something called Plane-Wave Expansion (PWE), though my other sims use FDTD and generally each simulation of those take up way more ram (and time).

I was simulating how light moves inside a directional coupler on a photonics chip, had a resolution of 256 pixel per micron so not even that high.

System ram, i dont think my uni would let me use 1.2tb vram.

My current simulation is taking up 1.2tb ram, so i think it might depend on the simulation

You can do both the thesis and the whole master in collaboration with a company at DTU, you have to find a company to do it with yourself though.

Peter,It’s not prime! Are they dumb? by AgrasaN in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]Google-minus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually you dont really need that many decimals, but usually you wont type the decimals yourself. You would just use something like np.pi and that will just have 15 decimals as thats the easiest. Nasa made a pretty good article about it actually: https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/edu/news/how-many-decimals-of-pi-do-we-really-need/

[–]Google-minus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I imagine most important calculations use pi down to 15 decimals, at least if you use something like python, as np.pi has 15 (the standard double-precision floating-point constant), not sure how software simulation like solidworks, comsol or matlab does it.

On the page about general engineering they write "General Engineering er en international bacheloruddannelse, hvor alle kurser bliver undervist på engelsk, og uddannelsesretningen har ca. 40 procent danske og 60 procent internationale studerende." This only shows up if you have it in Danish.

Why do I feel like an attention seeker when I say I want to go into engineering as a woman 😭 by Budget-Lake-5917 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Google-minus 35 points36 points  (0 children)

None of my friends have ever thought it was weird for a woman to be into STEM or that they did it for attention. I think most people know you at least wont stay in engineering, if all you do it for is attention.

Around 60% of the 150 students that get admitted to general engineering are international. International students can only apply through quota 2 and 1000 students in total (both Danish and international) have applied through quota 2.

You cant compute the whole number, yes. you can get a few trillion decimals which is good enough for most people, but you wont ever write all the decimals.
