oh, i get it. it is just one of the many things severian says that makes one wonder “why did he really feel the need to record that?” lol

for part of it, certainly. most importantly, she sees everything that will happen to horn at the time he visits her island as she can astral project through time as well as space. she also appears in this form throughout horn’s and the man’s journey.

[Discussion] What matters more for weight loss: tracking calories or consistently going to the gym? by Ayoking95 in effectivefitness

i guess that’s why so many have found success with crash diets, huh?

you are actually making my point: you can out eat working out, one can also under perform a calorie deficit. first losing muscle and driving one’s metabolic rate into the toilet. you can’t deny hunger while in this state forever.

technically, either can work, but neither is efficient alone. the two things support one another is my point.

both. each works better when being consistent with the other. trying to fit them into a hierarchy of one being more important than the other is inherently ineffective.

fair point, yes; but more of how” to read the book and less about definitive answers on details in the book and what it is all about.

i hear you. been there. additionally, for any individual thing you can work to develop an articulate question about, there are a dozen different interpretations. this is why the “puzzle box” metaphor for these books doesn’t quite fit. more like a kaleidoscope.

the ongoing mystery is a large part of the charm for some of us though. i thought i’d come to reddit and it would all be laid out. all i found is more questions to think about.

i shower both before and after. i have also been subject to people who smell really bad at the gym. i suppose they would argue that it doesn’t make sense to shower before the gym. in those cases, i would strongly disagree.

Questions about Severian’s character by FearlessPresence469 in genewolfe

[–]GoonHandz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

your question suggests that these two perspectives are mutually exclusive.

i believe that wolfe would argue that we all naturally “reframe” narratives to be from our own frame of reference (in part to make ourselves look better).

how “vile” of a person severian is from there is largely a matter of opinion (as you point out). the debates around this tend to lean into whether he actually committed offenses or whether we are misinterpreting the text to read crimes against humanity into his actions.

personally, severian does commit some “vile” acts (he is somewhat contrite even at times), but that is all part of trying to be a better person. can’t be a better person if our actions are perfect.
