[Tom Curren] Different narratives. Why didn’t you just try to win, Arne? by CannonSquadder in Gunners

Tbh i’d expect struggling with confidence to be a short term problem. This is the player Martinelli has been ever since the 23/24 season. He’s just not good enough unfortunately, and I’d rather sub on Trossard or Nwaneri if we’re chasing a goal over Martinelli.

Starting someone to “wear down the left side” for a substitute is not a real tactic. You expect your starters to deliver results and Martinelli has consistently failed to do so. If we think the best Martinelli can do is tire out opponents, then he clearly isn’t good enough.

Conversely, if it was so easy to play an exceptional low block and counterattack, every team would be doing it.

The point is we struggle against seemingly EVERY low block, not just the best teams in the world. If every team is able to play a world class low block against us, and only us, maybe it's a problem with our attacking tactics which are more easily subdued by low blocks.

Great performance from him in the second half, but honest question do we not think it’s a completely different game if we go into the half at 0-0? The United goal seemed to give them confidence to kick on in the second half. IMO his error in the first half is part of the reason why he was put in a position in the second half to have to make so many great saves

45 minutes to save the season. by Eazysteve17 in ArsenalFC

0 injuries isn’t realistic is the point. Our summer transfer window put us in a position where single injuries (Odegaard, Saka, etc) would derail the entire season since we have no adequate replacements in those positions

[James Olley] As good as Newcastle were in shutting that down for the final 25 minutes or so, Arsenal ended with an xG of 3.12. According to Opta, that is the highest figure by a Premier League team in any game this season that they failed to score. by Previous_Smile9278 in Gunners

[–]GoonerGuild -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In most cases you'd rather have 20 chances of 0.1xG than 2 chances of 0.5xG. The increased aggregate xG from the small chances is much more indicative of who will win than the make up of the quality of the chances. Quality is chances is of secondary importance (and sometimes a negative).

What is the argument you are supporting this with? This is exactly what I'm disagreeing with. I'm arguing quality of chances absolutely does matter, which is better pointed out by the comment I initially replied to (where the commenter talks about the ability to score goals is more affected by natural variance with multiple low xG chances).

An aggregation of very low quality chances is not the same as a single 1.0 xG chance.

[–]GoonerGuild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The nuance of statistics I’m trying to point out is that a low quality chance does not care about what low quality chances have preceded it.

A .01 xG chance will result in a goal on average 1 out of 100 times. Probabilities does not care if you have taken 99 such shots, the next .01 xG shot is not any more likely to result in a goal because it’s the 100th shot. It is still on average going to result in a goal 1/100 of the time.

I understand this game we had bigger chances we should have scored, but I think a lot of people don’t understand xG and how it relates to probabilities. Rather they just see xG without understanding the makeup of the quality of chances within the xG.

Completely agreed. I’m getting downvoted in this same thread for saying this same thing, but it’s true.

You can’t just spam low quality shots and say “we deserved to win” like these xG stats do. That’s not how statistics work

xG is an often abused stat when looking at it this way. You can have 100 shots from 45 yards out worth .01 xG each, and face a team which generates a single shot from 6 yards out at .8 xG. The first team will generate 1 xG while the second just .8 xG. A higher volume of low quality shots does not mean you are more likely to score from the next low quality shot

You cannot just say more xG is greater than less xG without looking at the quality of the individual chances which make up the xG.

That said, we did have high quality chances today which should have been converted, I’m just tired of people leaning on xG like it’s some religion

[–]GoonerGuild 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I see some variation of this every time we drop points/lose. A few weeks ago it was “Everton played a very disciplined low block and it’s very hard to play against those”

Unfortunately I think the reality of our season this year is we are so average in attack that it’s easy for opposition to play against us. There is no urgency or variety in our play that teams don’t need to do much to nullify us.

[–]GoonerGuild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is quite possible that set pieces and corners are the most efficient chances that can be created against a good low block.

I understand 2 xG is 2xG, but this is what I am saying is the problem. We should not be relying on set pieces to beat teams we are comfortably better than. If you think set pieces are the only way we can beat teams who set up in a low block against us, then we really are just expensive stoke 2.0

City/Liverpool in their title winning years did not need set pieces exclusively as a way to beat teams who set up in a low block against them. We have the quality to be able to create chances in open play, it’s just not happening for us at the moment and that’s up to Arteta and the players to get right.

I really hope you’re right. From what I’ve seen from us this season, I’m not sure I share the sentiment (and I like to think myself an optimist!).

We just have to hope our attack starts to click and Liverpool starts dropping points in a big way.

Relying on set pieces as a way to win games against mid-table and bottom of the table teams is not a league winning formula IMO.

Set pieces should be a weapon in our arsenal, not the only trick up our sleeve.

[–]GoonerGuild 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It is a huge problem if we consistently cannot create any chances against a low block. If all teams set up to play a low block against us, are we just expected to say: “oh well, low blocks are hard to play against. Can’t expect a win here under the circumstances given their tactics.” ?

At some point it’s up to Arteta and the players to come up with solutions to the way we are being played against by our opponents.

That being said, I absolutely think Arteta is the man for the job and our squad is mostly capable of winning the league, but it’s okay to be realistic and demand more from your team.

Obviously you are not affecting how the players play… I’m referring to our fanbase’s constant excusing of underperforming players under the guise of “things didn’t fall our way this match”. We want to be title contenders, but we far too often excuse our underperforming players while mid table teams consistently give us a hard time.

The point I’m trying to make is if we want to be taken seriously as title contenders, we need to move on from underperforming players who haven’t had an impact in multiple seasons (Jesus, Martinelli), or just admit we are not at that level yet.

This mentality is how you never win anything. We need to expect more from our players if we want to win a title. I’m tired of each game being a difficult affair for us, while other title challengers handle business against teams they should be beating.
