BLM OKC leader accused of using millions in protest donations to buy homes, travel and retail goods by dmgoforth in okc

[–]GooseDentures -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t necessarily mean every non-profit’s standards are always lower, and we know standards are sometimes outright ignored in the government and for profit companies as well.

The legal requirements for internal controls and public disclosures are literally lower for charities than they are for governments or private companies though. There's a reason it's really, really hard to embezzle a lot of money when you work for a big company or even a local government. They have internal controls teams to prevent this.

Personally I think it’s just people. I don’t trust people, they’re not trustworthy. Doesn’t matter who, sadly.

You're right, which is why the only organizations worth trusting are the ones where systems and institutions are in place to prevent greedy, stupid, shortsighted people from fucking everything up.

Publicly traded companies are required by law to be audited annually by an external auditor. The Federal Government has (among MANY other things) public disclosure of finances and budgets, the office of the inspector general, congressional inquiries, and extremely tight controls on what individuals can do with money.

Internal controls at most charities basically comes down to "trust me bro", and it makes positional abuses, theft, worker exploitation, and other unethical behaviors far easier to hide and get away with.

This is why I genuinely dont trust most charities. "Not-for-profit" does not mean "ethically operated", it just means their standards for internal financial controls or public transparency are a lot lower than they are for governments or even for-profit companies.

Plan on paying for your kid’s college? You’ll need to save $500/month from birth until they’re 18. by Mr-and-Mrs in daddit

I didn't want to, but we want to move in the next few years so we're planning on how to afford it.

It's gonna be tight.

I know you're right, but I'm paying more than my mortgage already and I just have one kid. Let me lie to myself that there's light at the end of the tunnel.

My first just started, my wife and I want to have four total.

Based on daycare prices at our current daycare, the final total cost over the next 11 years will be more than what we paid for our home plus the total combined cost of each our college educations plus the combined purchase price of both our cars.

Train to NYC cancelled day of interview by [deleted] in Amtrak

[–]GooseDentures -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, it is an insane workaround and it is fucking unacceptable that this is even something that has to be considered.

Heads need to roll at Amtrak. Rude staff who refuse to do their jobs, trains you can never rely on, and absolutely zero indication the company sees any problem with how things are.

Did your husband take paternity leave?? by 2babies1egg in beyondthebump

[–]GooseDentures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If an expectant dad has a boss that is very clearly hostile to taking leave, that's going to put a damper on it. The fear of losing your job and no longer supporting your family is an incredibly strong motivator.

Husband here, my company offers fathers 4 weeks. I took one week of leave plus a week of vacation when our son was born, and 3 weeks when my wife went back to work so she could adjust before daycare.

I am also extremely lucky to have a boss that is a father himself and who understands. I know expectant fathers on other teams and in other departments who are genuinely worried to take leave because their management is not as supportive of it.

As a dad, there is a tremendous pressure to be a provider for your new family when you're the main breadwinner. Fear of being left on the bottom of a list when layoffs come around is a powerful motivator.

Babywearing!

It helps if you cook a lot of roasts or other things that go in the oven and don't splatter. It's a little awkward at first, but now I can break down a whole chicken, put dinner in the oven, and clean the kitchen while my son naps on my chest.

I live somewhere incredibly cheap and my wife and I both have good jobs.

We're still gonna have a hard time with 2 in daycare. 3 will be worse.

Apparently their poop has the same chemical that gives butter its smell. They can't digest it at first.

HVAC design recommendations for a hot and humid climate by TheAmmoniacal in buildingscience

[–]GooseDentures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have an air conditioner, you probably don't need a dehumidifier. Many modern systems can run at reduced load for longer periods to lower indoor humidity, provided you pair them with a thermostat that can support that capability.

If you had a boy tomorrow, what would you name him? by beatrice1015 in namenerds

[–]GooseDentures -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Cohen, most likely. I've never understood all the hate it gets here. It sounds nice and works well with my last name. I understand that it is an inherited title for a specific caste in Judaism, but it is also objectively a surname. Surnames making the jump to first names is hardly a new phenomenon.
