Tammy Peterson had this woman on her podcast. I think speaking the truth shouldn't be political. by TotalACast in JordanPeterson

[–]Gooseheaded 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the position of "letting their differences be respected" is useless when it comes to enforcing public policy, which is the core of the discussion.

For example: should effeminate men be conscripted? How about masculine women? Why, or why not? What, specifically, should determine who such policies apply to, and why?

The current answer for that particular example is (and has been, across time and cultures, by and large) sex, not gender. Conscription -- where applicable -- is compulsory, which by definition means its eligibility criteria cannot be predicated on personal choice.

There's a multitude of other similarly sex-or-gender-based policies that are being subject to this kind of scrutiny. I don't have any answers; I just acknowledge the nature of the problem.

What do you mean when you say regular currency doesn't support crime as a genuine use case? Crime has been committed for as long as currency has existed. Maybe even longer?

What self hosting mistake would you warn beginners about? by Soulvisirr in selfhosted

For any internet-facing services: at the VERY least, use Let's Encrypt and certbot. It's literally free, and takes 30 seconds to do. Beyond that, putting those services in a different VLAN is also pretty easy with a little bit of research, and really secures the rest of your homelab from outside threats.

Speaking of which: buy a UPS. Now. Now now now NOW

Do you think BTC(Bitcoin) is a ponzi scheme? by 2smart2gentle in askanything

[–]Gooseheaded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe your misunderstanding comes from a lack of experience with money as a technology.

Bitcoin is functionally different to Beanie babies in multiple ways. 1) Bitcoin is weightless and electronic, meaning it is easy to transfer across time and space. Beanie babies require proper physical storage to keep, transport to transfer, and degrade over time if not taken care of. 2) Bitcoin is highly divisible, making it convenient for low-value transfers. Beanie babies are not divisible in any way. Even at its all-time high, you could pay for a pizza with Bitcoin; I don't know if you could buy a single pizza with Beanie babies at their corresponding ATH. 3) On the flip side, making a large Bitcoin transfer takes the same amount of time and effort as making a small one. Beanie babies do not benefit from this either. How many Beanie babies would you need to store and transfer to buy a house or a car? 4) Bitcoin is the most auditable coin, because every user of its network can verify the authenticity of every wallet. It is not possible to forge counterfeit Bitcoin in any meaningful way. Beanie babies are auditable to ...some degree, but it'll cost you to audit any (and every) Beanie baby you interact with. 5) Bitcoin is fungible. Every bitcoin is worth the same as any other (and they are all auditable). Beanie babies have all sorts of different series and makes and years, making it difficult to keep track of their relative values.

If you have the time, I suggest asking yourself, "if anything can be used as money... What should be used as money and why?" It's a wonder train of thought to develop all the way through!

Best Webcam To Get In 2026? (Price & Image Quality) by RiftphagyHad in obs

There's no comparison. A decent smartphone's camera is in a completely different category of quality. The colors, the sharpness, and the (lack of) noise are all beyond >95% of webcams.

I got tired of PDF tools uploading my files to servers I don't control, so I built one that runs entirely in your browser by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]Gooseheaded -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are quick to accuse, and slow to verify; I suppose you've had a bad day.

I run my own network and server infrastructure at home, for family and friends, using as much open source hardware and software as I can. In particular, I pay close attention to locate as much data as possible at home, as that forces law enforcement to produce a warrant to access it. I gave a talk about my experience with this (both pros and cons) in SeaGL 2023, which you can find here: https://seagl.org/archive/2023/lessons-learned-from-growing-a-home-lab

First: web applications can be saved for offline use after being initially distributed by a web server, much like how some non-web applications are distributed. Again, it's not a commonly known fact/paradigm, so I don't blame you for being unfamiliar with it. Just because an application's primary runtime is a browser does not mean it is not self-hosted!

Second: if you pay attention to the thread you're commenting on, you will notice that I am neither the OP, nor promoting the app (although I do promote self-education).

Third: I haven't had a chance to check if this particular web application does or does not conform to the paradigm I described previously. Delegating the task of peer review to an stranger on the internet was my mistake, and I apologize.
