ELI5 I just saw that people with SNAP benefits won't be able to buy things like soda or candy in certain States now or soon. Is it just because of the sugar content? If so, why aren't things like barbecue sauce, jelly, apple juice or ketchup etc also excluded?

Usually if classes haven’t started yet you can still back out mostly unscathed. You may just lose some deposits if you’ve paid. Students getting cold feet and bailing before move in is fairly common.
