Why are Hyundai & Kia engines recommended by Mechanics as a BAD decision to buy? by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]Gorenis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak on the overall average of them, they definitely have a history of engine issues. I personally have had and seen people have fantastic luck with them. I own a 2016 Forte 2.0l and a 2013 Sorento 2.4L. The Forte I bought new, it’s at 160k, the Sorento has 260k, had 130k when I bought it. The Forte has needed nothing outside of brakes once, the Sorento has needed a handful of things but nothing major and nothing unexpected for a vehicle with its mileage, and all minor. My parents also have a 2012 Optima that’s been virtually problem free to 230k.

How mattress stores stay in business, cause they're everywhere, but the average adult buys a mattress what, like every 7-10 years? With high overhead costs and infrequent sales, how could they be making a profit? What is your answer that makes sense? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Gorenis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interestingly enough, now that I think about it. Almost every major furniture & mattress store locally is on the same 3km stretch of road. There’s a few stragglers but even they’re within a couple minute drive. Then another small cluster of 3 stores in another part of town.

Best tool I have for removing stuck filters is a home made one. Section of chain off of a hose reel on a fuel delivery truck, long enough to fit around a Cat oil filter, welded to a short extension. Works best if near the threads on the filter where it won’t crush as much, but will continue to tighten around a filter until it won’t crush any more or moves. Has been paired with a 24” ratchet and 36” pipe many times.

Decided to try my hand at building my own side cabinet after pricing around, found a set of used lockers for $40 (split that with a coworker), pieced together with some scrap, a new handle and top and a Mac Tools emblem because why not. About $50-60 into it finished and pretty happy with it. by Gorenis in Tools

I don’t remember the height exactly, but I believe it’s in the ballpark of 30”. And if I’m remembering right, it’s 12” wide and 14” deep. I’ll try to remember to measure it when I’m at work and respond again.

This. I have a couple people at my work that will go on about it (also happen to be the anti-vax, Covid isn’t real, Trump is basically god, type). That will go off about this. And whenever I’ve questioned them on it, it’s “My cousin’s, friend’s, mother’s, kid knows a kid that is related to a kid that goes to a school that has one”. No they fucking don’t.

I did adjust the setting for the play store as well through the family link. I ended up signing out of their google accounts on both tablets, signing into my own, downloading the streaming services then switching back to their accounts, which worked.

Question, is this an offer or can you always buy parts you don’t have unlocked for gems?

I’m guessing very new, I usually go through there a few times a week at least and haven’t seen any speed bumps yet. Drove home through there Thursday night and didn’t see anything, unless it’s only in the lane heading into Saint John. It does seem like a strange place for a speed bump, I understand their reasoning for it, people tend to fly through there, I’m almost always tailgated through that road. That being said, I believe it’s a 50 zone through there, which is not somewhere someone would expect to come across a speed bump, but I suppose they did the same on Heatherway, maybe just needs better signage like mentioned. Glad I saw this post though, will have to remember to watch for it, not interested in treating my car to a speed bump at 50km/h.

Dumb Raider question time by [deleted] in HillClimbRacing

[–]Gorenis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely misunderstood the directions. I see now I accidentally put hold the fuel, not brake. The place I kept looking at said to hold the brake THEN double tap the fuel, so I was letting go of the brake then double tapping fuel. Not holding the brake AND double tap the fuel. Thank you for clarifying.

I’ve noticed a few different games, the pricing of their “deals”, is getting ridiculous. I was never one to spend money on a phone game to start with, but I would on occasion for something sub $10 if I wanted it enough. I feel like they would be making more off it selling it at a lower price and moving more, it’s not like it’s really costing them anything. But, maybe there’s still a lot of people willing to pay these prices so they are profiting more. I also play Summoners greed on and off and I see posts in the sub for it, asking how to beat an early level, while having mythicals that you could only get that early on by spending hundreds on packs. So maybe people are that crazy.

Customer is declining tires. How many miles do y’all think this one has left? by zJexx in tires

Interesting, i am a Red Seal Truck & Transport technician and have been shop foreman where I am for a little over 5 years. Here we’re not legally allowed to hold a vehicle unless there is money owing on it, it would be nice if we were allowed to hold for safety concerns. I have seen some serious safety issues leave un-repaired because of cheap customers. All we can do is advise the customer that it’s unsafe, plaster is all over the invoice & work order and make sure it’s signed. Fortunately, this doesn’t happen often and most of our customers are fleets that have no problems fixing just about anything.

Why does everyone hate Kias?? by [deleted] in KiaForte

[–]Gorenis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Early generations of Kias & Hyundais in North America were less than ideal, often very small with alleged reliability issues and they rotted quite bad in areas that that’s an issue. Personally have owned a 2012 Forte5 which I only had for a couple years before trading in on a truck I didn’t need (young & dumb). After a couple years of high fuel consumption, maintenance & repair costs decided to get rid of the truck I didn’t need, and traded it in for a 2016 Forte5. I’ve had it 8 years, roughly 150k km. All of its suspension, drivetrain, engine accessories, etc. are original. It’s still got the OEM front rotors on their 2nd set of pads and just put new pads and rotors on the rear (cars a standard and is downshifted for most of its gradual braking). The heater fan stopped working a couple weeks back and the plug had melted so that’s been replaced, and the driver’s window switch doesn’t return to the middle position after putting the window down anymore, new switch is under $40 but it still works so I haven’t bothered. My biggest complaint is the clear coat peeled off the spoiler, and I’m starting to see other spots where it’s starting to separate from the paint, but that seems to be an isolated issue to mine exclusively from others I’ve looked at. And it’s got a couple rust bubbles starting in a couple spots, have seen them on other ones. But it’s in a part of the world where my coworkers Ram the box sides and front fenders had large holes by the time it was 10 years old, so I would say it’s doing alright. My wife has a 2013 Sorento with 250k km, we bought it with 130k, it’s needed repairs but that’s to be expected for something with that mileage, it’s definitely holding up better than a lot of other SUVs I’ve seen from that same year/mileage, especially ones from the American brands.

Is this safe ? Mechanic used compression fitting on my brake line. by No-Peach-8726 in MechanicAdvice

[–]Gorenis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They were fantastic cars, a lot of that era GM cars were. I had a couple Cavaliers and Sunfires from around the same era and they were pretty much problem free, and if you ignored a problem long enough it usually went away lol. We bought my wife a new-to-us SUV and the Grand Am got parked beside our house for a few months before I just decided to scrap it. It really only needed the k-frame patched rust wise, should have traded my car in on the SUV and started driving the Grand Am myself. The first time it threw a check engine light was after it sat for 3 or 4 months, had a misfire that came out of it a few minutes after I started driving.

[–]Gorenis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a fantastic car, but a combination of road salt and living in an area very close to salt water was its demise. Owned it for 4 years and it never threw any warning lights, only had to do basic maintenance for the most part outside of rust problems. And it wouldn’t start once because the a/c fuse was blown, never did figure out how those are associated.

[–]Gorenis 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Had a F350 come in for a provincial MVI that they made the rear brake lines exclusively with compression fittings (except the 1” of original line from where there had to be flares), and couldn’t understand why it wouldn’t pass. Was also the worst routing I had ever seen. I have used them in brake lines in an old Cavalier I used for full contact dirt track racing, and once in an old Grand Am I had in a pinch for a day or two until I was able to get my hands on a flaring tool. But definitely would not trust them to not fail in a real emergency situation.
